"How'd they do that? Far as I recall they said Link was doing the Majora's Mask quest and Gannon came back destroyed Hyrule and then we have Wind Waker... maybe i missed something."

It fits with the 3D Zelda but it screws up the non-Capcom 2D games that came out before Ocarina of Time.  It's really hard to fit the older games in that timeline because a Noah's Ark style flood is such a huge event and there's no real evidence of it in the older games that are supposed to take place after Ocarina (which is chronologically the first game).  Plus they very specifically set the time frame Wind Waker takes place in relative to the N64 games and there isn't enough space in between for the older games to be pre-flood.  We talked about it a lot when the game came out so let's not start that again but basically if you think about the Zelda timeline logically with Wind Waker included for more than five minutes your brain explodes.  I just choose to ignore it outright because that's the only way I can come up with something that makes sense.  In theory the followup to Wind Waker should explain why the flood is undone and has no bearing on the future but Twilight Princess doesn't seem to be a direct follow up.  The whole thing is very complicated and it shows they didn't really put enough thought into it.

"Um, yeah? Your point?"

If all Yoshis are named Yoshi then why is one Yoshi not named Yoshi?  In Super Mario RPG only two of the dinosaurs are explicitly named: Yoshi (who is clearly the green dude from Super Mario World) and Boshi.  Everyone else is just unnamed like most NPCs.  So the assumption would be that like people all Yoshi's have unique names.  But in other sources Yoshi is just a catchall for the whole species and in Yoshi's Story they explicitly state that all Yoshi's are named Yoshi.  So what about Boshi?  He's an anomaly who breaks the rule but is only featured in one game.  In reality it seems more like Nintendo just didn't have their sh!t together and made a big inconsistency.

These are really minor issues because the games are great anyway.  But it just makes it harder for me to enjoy myself when I have such sloppy inconsistencies right in my face the whole time and they just get worse the more games Nintendo makes.  If I created a popular IP I would make sure that everything makes sense.  I would know more about the world I created than anyone else.  So it bothers me when the creator of something doesn't care enough himself to keep things consistent.  It shows a lack of care and it makes the games look more like manufactured product then any sort of artform.

Oh come on...You have evidence from one title...One not even developed by Nintendo!  Complaining about that is just plain silly...

Whoa, hold up...Why does it screw the 2D games up?  Just because Ninty thought of an idea later on?  Should Nintendo re-release the old games with this new information?  (Which would end up with you complaining about ports)  Can you use any imagination at all to come up with your own reasons for why the records don't exist?  Such as disasters that wipe out traces of history?  I mean, geez, Wind Waker takes place a thousand years after OoT!  Legends and stories come and go in that kind of time, and complaining because Nintendo doesn't rehash story elements that they had in their original games so they "make sense" is just absolutely bogus...

Zelda's timeline is completely whacky; you could debate it until the end of time and still not be 100% clear on it. But after TP comes out, we'll probably be able to make a little more sense of it. Until then, let's just throw our hands in the air for New Super Mario Bros.

Has everyone f*cking forgotten that Nintendo makes the gameplay first and worries about the story details afterward?  That's what makes their games fun.  The story comes after and is pretty much based upon the progression of the game and the gameplay mechanics.

I don't see why everyone lets it bother them so much.  Just accept that the continuity is screwy and have fun with the game.  I mean, I of all people should be annoyed by it: I'm a writer and film student, working toward writing and directing narrative films.  Things based on plot and characters.  Yet I respect Nintendo more than any film director, because they know what they're doing, and it's not the story.

I really hope New Super Mario Bros. has NO storyline getting in the way. I want Jungle Beat/retro goodness. I don't want them to explain why Bowser Jr. is there, like they didn't explain how Goombas took on the form of Bowser in the original, and why every female was the exact same collection of pixels. Also a rename, please? ;__; New Super Mario Bros. is awkward.

"New Super Mario Bros." sounds like a codename.  I don't see why they can't just call it Super Mario Bros. 5 or Super Mario World 2 or something.

Well I'm happy that a "new" Mario game is coming out and so soon.

I really don't care about the Mario continuity, I don't even think that Mario games have that much "story" to tell (except Mario rpg's), they are there just to fill in on your imagination and that's it, just have fun with the game.

Btw, the interview with Takashi Tezuka on the latest NP was very informative and I was actually quite surprised at how much info he gave about the game.

He's a Koopa, hence the name King Koopa.  He's the ruler because he's the largest/fiercest Koopa there is (as opposed to taking the thrown due to blood rites).
Sorry, but you usually do all the correcting

EDIT: Ah yes, Mario. I have been crossing off the days on my calendar without even knowing the release date for this game.. I want it more than I want TP, and that's saying something.

I'm pretty sure the Oracle games, which you can link together, aren't entirely separate...at least in that sense.

There are also others that are pretty close like Ocarina Of Time and Majora's Mask, or Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures...

This is the truth.  I only know of DC Comics from what I read on wikipedia, but the intertwining story elements and characters got so convoluted and complex they had to start a comic miniseries just to kill off as many superheroes as they could to simplify things.  I got a headache just thinking about it.

It would actually be in Nintendo's best interests to keep things ambiguous as possible and not explain everything in the finest detail.  I would hate to have to play Crisis on Infinite Nintendos one day.

The "continuity errors" in Nintendo games are so small time and invisible compared to others I could name.

In fact, I should make a Top Ten Biggest Game Plot Holes post.  Some of my preliminary choices might surprise you.

Age of Apocalypse was a time distortion event, which was nulled when Professor X was saved although a few characters managed to escape into the normal "time stream" (Holocaust, Dark Beast, etc.). The "2nd" Age of Apocalypse was simply some comic books going back and telling more stories from the era, not the actual event happening all over again (think of them as prequels if it helps).

"In 2005, Marvel published an Age of Apocalypse one-shot and mini-series to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the popular event.

The one-shot features stories set before the events of the crossover..."

I owned Age of Apocalypse 1 (thick book)
was cool back then, myself and a mate use to swap the price stickers, so a 6dollar comic turned into a 4dollar one
