New SMB Date and Magnetica Announced
« on: February 21, 2006, 03:02:42 AM »
Mario is headed to your DS this May, along with a newly announced puzzle game.

Two New Titles Announced For Nintendo DS

It's been more than 20 years since Nintendo's highly acclaimed franchise,   Super Mario Bros.(R), first hit store shelves.  On May 7, eager fans from   Mario's classic days must wait no longer to see the brothers return in an  all-new platformer with the launch of New Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo DS.

On the heels of Valentine's Day romance is in the air, even in the Mushroom   Kingdom.  But Princess Peach wasn't able to celebrate with her special   someone, seeing that she's been taken prisoner by Bowser and Bowser Jr.  Only   the Mario Bros. can rescue the princess from her evil captors as they battle   familiar enemies like Goombas and Koopas along with new foes and big bosses.

New Super Mario Bros. is loaded with features and characters that could only   exist in the Mushroom Kingdom, including all-new power-ups like the Blue   Shell, in which Mario can ride, and a massive Mushroom that makes him  ultra-huge.  The title features stunning 3-D models moving through lavish,   cleverly designed 2-D worlds, culminating in a final showdown for the freedom   of Princess Peach.

Then, on June 5, another title launches for Nintendo DS.  In Magnetica(TM),   marbles roll down a twisted path toward the goal and it's up to players to   stop them by launching new marbles into the oncoming ones.  The marbles will   disappear if players match three or more in this massive marble elimination.    All actions are controlled with the stylus in this title that satisfies even   the strongest puzzle addiction.

THE LAMB IS WATCHING!

A new Mario game with classic 2D Mario platforming action = MADE OF AWESOME.

Now, Magnetica sounds like...what's that game called?  Zuma?  With the coloured marbles and the matching up of three?  I suppose some puzzle games might benefit from the quicker action of the stylus.  If only there wasn't that hinge that puts a big break between the screens...unless it's like Tetris.

Between Tetris DS and New Super Mario Bros., I'm getting this oldschool feeling.  Neo-nostalgia, if you will.

I'm really sad that Zuma's taken all the fame here, because I think there's a chance that Zuma was just a knock-off of this game.  I did some digging and Magnetica/Puzzloop first came out in 1998 and Zuma wasn't released until a couple years later.

I kind of have to agree... he was cool in Yoshi's Island (great, more like it), Yoshi's Story, and the newest Mario and Luigi.. but he just doesn't make sense outside of those games, and I hated his voice in Sunshine. I kind of wish they would have brought back the Koopa Kids for stuff like Mario Kart too.

"I HATE Bowser Jr.  Stupid stupid stupid character with no point."

Agreed.  When he showed up in Super Mario Sunshine my immediate thinking was that Nintendo screwed up their own continuity by having Baby Bowser and Bowser co-exist.  Plus Bowser already has the Koopa kids.  Wind Waker did the same thing and its story totally f*cked up the Zelda chronology.  Nintendo may make great games but they SUCK at keeping their own continuity straight.  They need like a DC-style "crisis" to clean up all the inconsistencies.  It could be worse though.  At least Bowser Jr is no Crystal from Star Fox.

Still I'm very much looking forward to this game.  E3 time isn't going to bother me.  Besides it gives the attendees something to play while they wait in line.

I just hope Nintendo doesn't go too nostalgia crazy and this game feels like a new Mario game instead of just a trip though old times.  Mario games used to be a big deal because they were so unique, not because they had tons of fan service and familiar characters.

Mario killed the Koopa Kids in Super Mario World, remember? They're gone. The game even makes a point to tell you that they're dead though it uses euphemisms for that.

That was Bowser Jr.  in Super Mario Sunshine, not Baby Bowser.

Baby Bowser and Bowser Jr. are NOT the same character, this has already been stated in this thread. I still hate Bowser Jr. though, they should get rid of him and bring back the Koopa Kids.

Well they both look exactly the same, especially in the latest Mario and Luigi... In that case I 100% dislike Bowser Jr. then.

Yea, I got goosebumps when they brought back the kids in M&L. I would love to see them brought back with more personality in 3D. Unfortunately, the style of Mario games has changed over the years. I just can't  see them being in any pure Nintendo developed game right now. I guess I find the current art direction of Mario games to be kinda bland and lackluster. Even the screens of the "New Super Mario Bros" didn't seem too exciting as far as the art goes. I'm hoping for a different look before the game comes out. Oh, and also, if I see ONE MORE "Mario Party model" of Mario again I will surely explode.

Yeah, the Mario games badly need a clarification game to set the record straight.

It's almost as bad as 7,000 different studios all making Lupin the 3rd movies...

Some questions I'd like to see answered:

1. Does Bowser lay eggs or asexually reproduce? If not, where the hell did these kids come from?

2. Where did Bowser himself come from? Why are there no others like him? What species is he?

On a long drive, some friends and I were dreaming theories in regards to how Bowser might have come to be and how one could explain his Koopa kids and the apparent lack of a mate.

The theory was that Bowser is a mutation of the basic turtle species. In being the first of his kind, he was considered to be the destined ruler of the turtles. Since his rise to power, other mutated turtles like himself have been born. Rather then slaying them for fear that they may one day usurp him, Bowser keeps them as his own children/subordinates.

In addition to being able to breathe fire upon reaching adulthood, Bowser's species appears to be able to alter its size, as Bowser has been anywhere from four times Mario's size to roughly 30 times his size when Mario encounters him (from the original Super Mario Bros. to SM64, to SMS, Bowser has never remained a consistent size).

Bowser Jr and Baby Bowser look exactly the same.  Nintendo is infamous for screwing up their own continuity.

-They can't decide if Moblins are bulldogs or pigs.
-The Kokiri apparently can't leave the forest or they die yet Saria is clearly not in the forest at the end of Ocarina of Time but is still alive and it is never really touched on that Link didn't die the second he left the forest.  Yeah he's actually a Hylian but you figure Navi would be shocked he's still alive or something.
-Zoras have completely changed appearance since the first Zelda game.
-They have Yoshi as both a singular character and as the universal name of the whole species and all Yoshis are named Yoshi EXCEPT the blue Yoshi named Boshi in Super Mario RPG.
-They seem to vary between Mushroom people having mushroom heads or mushroom hats.
-They have Baby Mario and Luigi coexist with adult Mario and Luigi in several of the spin-off games.
-The layout of both Hyrule and the Mushroom Kingdom has changed drastically between games.  Hyrule has an okay excuse that there are multiple Links (but even then mountains and lakes wouldn't move) but Mushroom Kingdom has no excuse.

They just don't keep their continuity straight and it's clear they don't really care.  So when I saw "Bowser Jr" in Super Mario Sunshine I immediately assumed that they just threw Baby Bowser in there and were completely unaware that Baby Bowser is in fact the "real" Bowser.  They don't seem to understand that Baby Mario is the same as Mario so I assume that same ignorance of their own creations would apply to Baby Bowser as well.  Why else would the two characters look EXACTLY THE SAME?  I wonder if Nintendo just has a big poster of all their character designs with just "good/bad" next to each name and they just grab whatever they feel like off of it without any research.  The reason he's called "Bowser Jr" is probably because at some point someone realized the goof up so they changed the character's name instead of redesigning him.

How'd they do that? Far as I recall they said Link was doing the Majora's Mask quest and Gannon came back destroyed Hyrule and then we have Wind Waker... maybe i missed something.

Although they don't affect the overall quality of the games, it would be nice if they had a continuity which could be followed without a tremendous leap of faith.

I think Bowser looking the same as Bowser Jr. at that age is perfectly acceptable, though. That's just what one of his species likely looks like at that age. Take away their crazy hair, makeup and accessories and the koopa kids would look the same.

Also, Hyrule barely survived the transition to 3D so I don't fault them for it.

I was really hoping NSMB would be the best Mario ever. But Bowser Jr. just ruins it. I WANT KOOPA KIDS. NOW. Grrrrrr. Why doesn't Nintendo ask FANS what they want!

(And I DO like Baby Bowser, because he's used with Baby Mario Brothers, so it works.)

-They can't decide if Moblins are bulldogs or pigs.

There are Bulldog Moblins and Pig Moblins...Who said that Moblin is a distinct species?

-The Kokiri apparently can't leave the forest or they die yet Saria is clearly not in the forest at the end of Ocarina of Time but is still alive and it is never really touched on that Link didn't die the second he left the forest.  Yeah he's actually a Hylian but you figure Navi would be shocked he's still alive or something.

Errr, Saria is a Sage (I don't believe she's in actual physical form anymore)...There is also the possibility that the whole "die when you leave the forest" was completely made up by the Deku Tree so the Kokiri wouldn't leave... ...And Navi probably knew Link was Hylian...

-Zoras have completely changed appearance since the first Zelda game.

Um, there are several species of Zora...Try playing Oracle of Ages...

-They have Yoshi as both a singular character and as the universal name of the whole species and all Yoshis are named Yoshi EXCEPT the blue Yoshi named Boshi in Super Mario RPG.

Um, yeah?  Your point?

-They seem to vary between Mushroom people having mushroom heads or mushroom hats.

THIS IS CRUCIAL INFORMATION!

-They have Baby Mario and Luigi coexist with adult Mario and Luigi in several of the spin-off games.

Cause they are spinoffs?  SPINOFFS ARE NOT CANON!

-The layout of both Hyrule and the Mushroom Kingdom has changed drastically between games.  Hyrule has an okay excuse that there are multiple Links (but even then mountains and lakes wouldn't move) but Mushroom Kingdom has no excuse.

It's called having variety...Why limit level design with a map created back in the day?

Sup, "continuity" complaints sat on...

He's a Koopa, hence the name King Koopa.  He's the ruler because he's the largest/fiercest Koopa there is (as opposed to taking the thrown due to blood rites).

He's called that, yes, but among the inhabitants of his kingdom, there is no creature which resembles him to the same extent, making him and his "kids" appear to be a completely different species.

I'm probably throwing far too much Darwinism into a situation which completely doesn't call for it...
