Nintendo Gaming / Miyamoto Interview
« on: July 22, 2006, 12:33:46 AM »
Asked about reactions from E3 which claimed it difficult to go back to using a standard controller after having used the Wii controller, Miyamoto said, "That's because once you've gotten used to free style using the remote control, going back to a controller where you use both hands, you're unable to move your hands and end up feeling a lack of freedom. However, I have absolutely no intention of being negative about current controllers. We are, after all, preparing a standard style controller in the form of the Classic Controller."    Miyamoto feels that some games will actually work better with the classic controller. He mentioned F-Zero as one such game.

So the classic controller will work with new games, good.

Nintendo Gaming / Miyamoto Interview

A few of the interesting points:

Now that the Wii is out there and people are playing it for the first time, how does it feel to see their reactions?

Because it’s their first time, one thing I’ve been wondering about is how people who have been playing with standard video game controllers up until now, how quickly they’re able to pick it up.    We’ve found that people who don’t normally play games are able to pick (the Wii controller) up and understand it and use it very quickly, but people who have been playing games for a long time have a little bit more of a learning curve, because they have to relearn.

Have you acknowledged that you’re asking gamers to all of a sudden move their bodies? There are sure to be lazy gamers who say, “I don’t want to jump around, I want to just sit on the couch and move my thumbs when I play.”

The fact of the matter is, if you want to, you can play in much the same style as you did before. You can sit with Zelda and just with little movements you can control the game perfectly well. Similarly with tennis, by kind of slapping the Wii remote against your hand, you can play the game that way if you really want to. As people get better and better at the individual games, it may be that their motions drift from the more exaggerated to the less exaggerated. But at the same time, I tend to find that moving around a bit more tends to be more fun.”

Nintendo Gaming / Could Wii Sports be bundled with the Wii?
« on: May 20, 2006, 09:13:12 AM »
Anyone else thinks that ninty is planning to Bundle Wii sports with the Wii at launch?  Seems to me that would make a $250 price tag seem very attractiveand would work as a great intro to the Wii system.

Nintendo Gaming / Gaesindustryeditorial

 Wii will prevail

Didn't want to post the entire editorial so i'll post the opening paragraph:

For a company whose stated goal is to win over the hearts and minds - and, crucially, wallets - of people who are currently not consumers of videogames, Nintendo is rather good at playing up to a hardcore audience of gamers.

Basically the editorial states that although Nintendo's E3 showing was good, it failed to draw in the casual/non-gamers that they are targeting(it also points out how Red Steel was given too much exposure considering its still has flaws, especially when Mario galaxy could have been show instead)

According to IGN, you will indeed have the option to purchase a copy on the same day you pick up your Wii console - which will be some time towards the end of the year.

Nintendo Gaming / Third parties having trouble?
« on: May 10, 2006, 01:33:41 PM »
From the impressions I've read most of the first party titles sound great, a few need a little control tweaking, and maybe a little work on the graphics, but all in all sound like they'll meet Ninty level quality by launch.

Third party games on the other hand don't sound as far along, Red Steel for example seems to have sensitivity issues with the control and frame rate problems.

Likely this is more just an issue of getting used to the controller and hopefully it gets cleared up by launch, but its something to that could be a problem.

Nintendo Gaming / Must read editorial
« on: December 09, 2005, 09:23:29 AM »
'Video Game' or 'Game Video' machines?

It isn't a perfect editorial, but i think it does sum up the stupidity of all the comments made about the Rev's graphical power, a few excerpts from the editorial.

It's the interaction that distinguishes games from the other mediums. So why has graphics become the benchmark in a medium where GAMEPLAY is the unique identifier? Who knows. Graphics should be the benchmark for movies and sound should be a benchmark for music. How backwards have we become?

Do we judge a music album based on the music video? Hell no, that doesn't make sense since it's the SOUND that matters. Do we judge a movie by how good the soundtrack is? Hell no, that doesn't make sense since it's the VISUAL PERFORMANCE that matters. Do we judge games primarily by how good the GRAPHICS are? Yes we do. In a medium where graphics should take a backseat to interactivity, the majority of us have been trained like Pavlov's dogs to salivate at graphics and put gameplay in the backseat. Case in point: The whole MGS4 "unveiling" (or the whole PS3 unvieling for that matter). Like little trained monkies we jumped up and down at these graphics and claimed that "The next generation is here!" That's stupid. I'm stupid. We're all stupid. We've all been duped. Now most of us are all but ready to write-off a console that could be just what this stale f**king industry needs just because it doesn't meet our bastardized benchmark of what constitutes a "next generation" console, namely better graphics. We're a bunch of marketing tools for lazy developers who'd rather get rich by just improving visuals, animation and physics while giving us the same gameplay experience as the Playstation.

General Gaming / How the heck?

Gartner estimates that PlayStation 2 currently has about 51 percent of the worldwide market for the most recently available consoles, compared with about 34 percent for the first Xbox and 15 percent for Nintendo Co.'s GameCube.

This has to wrong, there is no way that MS has more than double the marketshare of Nintendo Worldwide.

General Gaming / if they do this on the PS3 then they have lost their minds
« on: November 09, 2005, 12:31:28 PM »
SCE has secured the patent for a new disc technology that, if used, would not allow the PS3 to read used games for that platform. The technology was invented by Kutaragi himself, as well as two others.

I'm willing to put this in the believable folder because it was invented by Katuragi.

General Gaming / Sony's PS3 strategy
« on: November 04, 2005, 07:49:09 AM »
The PS3 is a Blu-ray trojan horse. According to an anonymous ”high-level studio executive,” the PS3 will be a “subsidized Blu-ray play that will sell 20 million units. The first HD player will be on the market for $1,000. PS3 could be at $300 or $400. Sony will be selling them at a loss the first six months to a year just to get Blu-ray players out in the market. So studios realize they need to have their content on it.”

Another duh award.  But the amount posted by merril lynch on the PS3's price to manufacture ($465+) indicates a price point closer to $400 and is in line with the comment that they plan to lose money for 6 to 12 months at least. (A $65+ loss per system will add up huge in the first year, heh, if blu-ray fails to make much of an impact this could really screw sony over)

General Gaming / MS to have cost advantage in next gen.
« on: November 03, 2005, 12:47:42 PM »
And the Duh award goes to Merril Lynch:

Leading financial management company Merrill Lynch has today released a report that analyzes some of the advantages and disadvantages for both Microsoft and Sony in the upcoming next generation console war (Nintendo was not part of the discussion).
(those bastards)

Titled simply "The Next Game Consoles," the report gives the Xbox 360 a major advantage when it comes to cost. "Sony has in PS3 a console with plenty of impressive proprietary technology, but also a high manufacturing cost

I could have told them that.

But this is interesting:
With that cost analysis in mind, the report also predicted a key price advantage for the 360 by the end of next year: "Based on the cost analysis as well as our analysis of the two companies' strategies, we think that Xbox 360 could be selling at half the price of PS3 in the latter half of 2006."

General Gaming / PS3 not Backwards compatible?
« on: October 29, 2005, 04:47:08 AM »
At least not fully it seems:

gamesindustry.biz

Speaking to the IDG News Service, Sony spokesperson Reiko Sakamoto said: "It's hard to say the PlayStation 3 will be 100 per cent backwards compatible."

We believe multiple factors are responsible," Sakamoto told IDG, explaining that the new console has a different chipset which is not compatible with the way some software is programmed, resulting in glitches such as hangs and slow game saves.

Seems only Nintendo gets it right.

General Gaming / More Sony Lies
« on: October 21, 2005, 11:21:49 AM »
Apparently Sony has been trying to massage the PSP numbers by stating 10 million have been shipped

but of course certain sites (like gamespot) have decided shipped and sold mean the same thing and have taken to saying Sony has sold 10 million PSP's

The truth howerver is much much less:

From Gamasutra:
According to recent statements from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the PSP has sold "over a million units throughout the PAL territories", while chart analyst Media Create gives a figure of 1,910,205 units sold in Japan to date. As ever, figures for North America remain the most obscure, although recent estimates from The NPD Group put the figure at over 2 million units

From Kikizo:
Official numbers are difficult to come by, but a press release from Sony this week, to announce the launch of the PSP Giga Pack, says that just over a million PSPs have been sold in Europe since the handheld's launch on 1 September. Another report says that actual sales in North America are standing at around 2.5 million.

Does this mean that there are millions of PSPs sitting in stock rooms and on store shelves throughout the world? It seems so.

« on: October 14, 2005, 12:53:18 PM »
Speaking in a Q&A issued by Sony to commemorate the PlayStation's 10th anniversary, Kazunori Yamauchi has said a few things that make the PlayStation 3 sound like something of a world changer.

"The PlayStation 3 is the first piece of hardware allowing photo-realistic computer graphics, and is the first game hardware that can perform calculations for physics simulation to the level of our satisfaction," said Yamauchi. "With a matrix of such elements, a new world of entertainment is about to unfold. This is the beginning of a world, different to that of what we have called "games" up to today."
