Developers abandoning PS3 development?
« on: October 14, 2005, 01:08:39 PM »
developing software for the PS3 from scratch requires an initial investment of at least 2 billion yen (US $17.6 million) and that’s before they start.

"Japanese site ZakZak, translated here, muses on the upcoming battle between the PS3 and Xbox 360 and fears Sony’s demanding standards could put it at a disadvantage."

Good old Nintendo.  Always creating lots of hype and anticipation for their consoles.

What the hell is this source anyway?  Isn't the Inquirer that bullsh!t tabloid full of made up celebrity gossip?

This is an area where Nintendo has a good strategy in trying to have lower development costs.  Though deep down I think that if Sony scared third parties off they would all go to MS first.  Nintendo might be cheaper but they're also in last place and have an unproven controller design.

Theinquirer.net is different from the inquirer, whereas the inquirer is a tabloid, theinquirer.net is a tech news page.

interesting.  If this is true it could eventually lead to more games being put on the revolution(although like they said developers will more then likely flock to x360).  Ill take this as mere speculation until we here it from some top developers.

I don't see how this is speculation when it's pretty much proven that the nextgen systems are going to be expensive to develop for...Why do you think Ninty has been making such a big deal out of cheap development costs?

Sony doesn't care how much it cost developers, as long as they make it for their system.

I checked where they got the original link, or the translation of it at least. Here's some snippets:

Quote

“Kutaragi has said, ‘Please develop suitable software for PS3 - this software must not be of the same standard as PS2 software.’

This can be interpreted as telling 3rd parties to not get lazy. Or it could mean something else.

Quote

The previous interviewee also said, “Kutaragi is pursuing hardware evolution, and the credibility gap for him is now even worse than that of the GameCube era [when many developers defected from Nintendo].â€

Damn, that's low. Really low.

Quote

In an aside about the Nintendo Revolution, the journalist remarked, “It will survive on the basis of its originality. I don’t know about [its prospects in] other countries, but it may win alone in Japan.â€

At least he didn't say Nintendo is teH DoOmEd!...

That's an interesting comment. If the PS3 has difficulties it would actually make sense for Nintendo to win back Japan and Microsoft take North America...

I watched a video interview from a guy at Valve. He made an interesting point how Sony could be making development so complex in the hope that everybody's development budget will go towards PS3 games, squeezing out the budgets for Xbox and Rev development.

I wonder if that would either work out great for them, or bite back hard.
"wow."

theinquirer.net is like The Register a tech tabloid, they have a tendency to exaggerate.

Plus, 17MUSD initial investment? Yeah, sure. That sounds so blatantly made up it's not even on the same planet as "believable".

BigJim: Don't listen to the guys at Valve. They would throw a tantrum about how complex it is to develop for if it was a plain old Mac. "OMG No DirectX! How can anyone develop a game for that?"

Actually its not that hard to believe, a lot of people have been speculating that DEV costs for the next-gen could rival the costs of producing a major motion picture.

Dev costs are one thing but the "and that's before they start" bit seems to suggest that's without actual development. Also, keep in mind that while the "blockbuster" games may cost that much, many games are developed for MUCH less than that top cost. Especially the niche games like Katamari aren't close to the "Hollywood" budgets.

Problem is this might end up phasing out the niche games on the PS3, it might be an attempt to create only the most graphically stunning games on the PS3.  (but with that much investement, could you imagine the fallout if the game flops)

As a result they may no longer care about getting the small time devs.

Might work with the medium sized devs...but the large devs can take the hit, while the small devs will avoid the system altogether.

They cannot phase out cheap games unless they reject anything that doesn't cost at least ten million to make. I don't think they're insane enough to do that.

not only that, but correct me if Im wrong not only is there a good chance that the japanese gamers would go for the rev, but probably the japanese developers as well.

Eh, I'll believe it when I see it.  Some small developers may be put off of the PS3, but they won't be of too much consequence, is my guess.  I remember these same types of arguments going on about the PS2 way back when.  However, I realize development costs have been a big topic in the development community lately, so maybe it will have a bigger effect than I think.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Inbetween money hats, PS2 devlopers were saying basically the same thing: "oh, this is too complicated, jump ship!" but afterwards it was, "Oh, we love the challenge!"

I expect it'll be the same this time.

The only company I know that LIKES to make games on hard to program systems
is Factor 5.

Look at what they did with the N64...
Look at what they are doing with the PS3...
