TalkBack / New Mega Evolutions Revealed in Pokemon OR/AS Demo
« on: October 14, 2014, 03:29:14 PM »

Warning: Spoilers for demo ahead.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38741/new-mega-evolutions-revealed-in-pokemon-oras-demo

Both Mega Steelix and Mega Glalie have appeared in the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire demos, out now in Japan and Europe. Mega Steelix is reported to gain the Sand Force ability and Mega Glalie boasts the skill Refrigerate and is a pure Ice-type.

The OR/AS demo starts off by sending players to an island where Team Aqua and Magma are looking for the two. Which Pokémon it is appears to vary by location: Steelix in Japan and Glalie in Europe and Korea. There are five different island layouts to play through, each one containing a random set of Pokémon and giving trainers a variety of tasks to complete in order to get items that will be transferable to the full version upon release. Playing through multiple times will net players more and more different items and experiences.

Pokémon fans in North America have until October 20 to sign up in order to receive a demo code.

TalkBack / Bplus Developing Two New Titles
« on: October 07, 2014, 04:28:01 PM »

Load up your eShop credit.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38678/bplus-developing-two-new-titles

Developers of the Bit Boy series, Bplus, recently went to Facebook to announce they are working on two new titles set to debut on the Nintendo eShop before the end of 2014. Further details on the content of these new games aren't yet available, but Bernd Geiblinger of Bplus hinted in his post that Bit Boy's hero Kubi will definitely be making some cameos.

The Bit Boy games, the first releasing as a WiiWare title back in 2009 and the second releasing on 3DS earlier this year, have gained traction for strong core concepts but faced mixed reception upon release. Bit Boy!! Arcade improved the formula a little over its predecessor, garnering higher reviews on average, so with any luck these two new titles will seek to raise the bar even higher.

TalkBack / Thomas Was Alone Makes Its Way to Wii U

Best-selling indie platformer is coming to Nintendo's console.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38644/thomas-was-alone-makes-its-way-to-wii-u

Curve Digital announced today that indie platformer Thomas Was Alone will be coming to Wii U in November 2014. Although originally created and developed by Mike Bithell, Curve was responsible for developing PS3 and Vita versions of the game and will be reprising their roles as developers of the new versions for Wii U and other consoles.

Jason Perkins, Curve Digital's Managing Director, said: “Thomas Was Alone came to PlayStation right at the start of their campaign to make console development more appealing to smaller developers. Since then, indie games have become a much larger part of the landscape for all major platform holders. It’s exciting to be working with Mike again and to be able to bring the title to even more gamers..."

The 2D puzzle platformer released originally on Steam in July 2012 to generally favorable reviews and has since released on several other systems. Selling over one million copies worldwide to date, it is considered one of the best selling indie games on the market. Thomas Was Alone will be available on all formats for £6.99 or $9.99.

TalkBack / Epona Announced for Master Quest DLC Pack
« on: September 29, 2014, 08:20:07 AM »

TalkBack / Peach Glitch Discovered in Super Smash Bros. Online Play
« on: September 16, 2014, 08:21:24 PM »

Players are receiving temporary bans but Nintendo's on it.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38529/peach-glitch-discovered-in-super-smash-bros-online-play

Peach players have discovered a glitch in the online "For Glory" mode in the Japanese Super Smash Bros. 3DS that has resulted in temporary bans being issued.

The princess's Down-B attack is suspected to be the source, causing the game's online mode to register cheating if it's used near the start of the match. Since "For Glory" mode specifically restricts item usage, following a tournament style set up, players theorize that the game's anti-hack security registers this as bringing an item into the match, therefore issuing the ban for cheating. It hasn't been confirmed that this is true, but so far other characters with similar attacks (i.e. Link's bomb attack) appear not to be likewise affected.

Smash's new temporary bans are designed not only to prevent cheating in tournament-style matches--hacks or otherwise--but also for protect matches from falling victim to poor player behavior and consistent connection problems. Hopefully once the bugs have been worked out, this system will help online play run a bit more smoothly.

Nintendo has already been made aware of the issue and have declared that they are already working on an update to fix the glitch, which they anticipate to have available by next week.

TalkBack / Code Name: S.T.E.A.M Receives ESRB Rating
« on: June 30, 2014, 06:10:46 PM »

E for Exciting!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37969/code-name-steam-receives-esrb-rating

Although it's not set to release until 2015, ESRB has already given Nintendo and Intelligent Systems' new Codename: S.T.E.A.M a "T" (Teen) rating.

ESRB cites Blood, Fantasy Violence, and Mild Suggestive Themes as reasons, as well as noting that online gameplay "may expose players to unrated user-generated content." Here is a short, full rating summary for the game as it stands in its current stage of development:

"This is a role-playing game in which players battle aliens in an alternate version of Victorian England. Players command groups of characters through turn-based skirmishes and use steam-powered weapons (e.g., rifles, hammers, grenade launchers) to kill alien creatures. Combat is highlighted by explosions, cries of pain, and brief bursts of red blood. Some levels allow players to shoot from turrets or tanks in more frenetic combat. Female figures are occasionally depicted in revealing outfits (e.g., low-cut tops); one figure is depicted on a “victory” screen each time the player wins a skirmish."

TalkBack / Re: Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley E3 Hands-on Preview
« on: June 13, 2014, 05:59:34 PM »
Trust me guys, not confused. I've actually done the coverage for both this Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons; I know which is which. My comment was solely meant to illustrate the fact that Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley will be the only title actually bearing the Harvest Moon name, due to licensing. "True Harvest Moon" refers to the name only, not the content of the game in comparison to Story of Seasons.

TalkBack / Harvest Moon: The Lost Valley E3 Hands-on Preview
« on: June 12, 2014, 11:50:00 AM »

It's Minecraft for Harvest Moon.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/hands-on-preview/37794/harvest-moon-the-lost-valley-e3-hands-on-preview

It seems that we’ll be ramping up the farming action this year with not one but two “Harvest Moon” games. Lost Valley is, however, the real Harvest Moon, developed internally and localized exclusively by Natsume. Aside from the traditional Harvest Moon staple gameplay conventions, building and exploration are the name of the game.

The Lost Valley’s main new feature takes the customization introduced in A New Beginning and gives us more. Players can directly decide on the formation of the land on their farm by raising and lowering it, demolishing, and even adding more water. And every player can even change their farm based on priorities and personal preference. Like raising crops? No problem; there’s plenty of ways to expand your fields! Like fishing? There’s an app for that too.

Want to just shame other players with your epic building skills? Well there is now a simple building component to compliment your land modification. Insta-builder is a tool that uses materials you’ve collected and gives you various building options that you can place into your world. It can get a little clunky when you run into an obstacle while building since there is currently no way to easily demolish or modify it from the insta-builder menu. Players will have to halt their progress and rid themselves of the obstacle before they can finish, which can even require a little bit of travel at times. The process can be tedious, especially for a game that has focused on streamlining man of its elements.

One such case eliminates some of the monotony of tool usage by shaving the whole convention down. So long as the necessary tool exists in the character’s inventory, things like chopping down trees and fishing are only a button a way. I was definitely excited to see the loading screens going to and from my bag disappear.

This new Harvest Moon game is definitely a departure from the more social focus of many previous titles, but it offers us a new dynamic to the gameplay that could be a total game changer. How this will all work out in the course of a full game will be something to keep an eye out for.

CORRECTION: As has been pointed out in the comments, this game is not made by the usual Harvest Moon developer, and only carries the name due to former western publisher of the series Natsume owning the trademark to the name. Sorry for the confusion.

TalkBack / Citizens of Earth E3 Preview
« on: June 10, 2014, 12:58:00 PM »

Recruit your favorite neighborhood Homeless Man!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/preview/37741/citizens-of-earth-e3-preview

In this new title coming to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, it's up to the newly elected Vice President of the World to, you know, save the world. But this hero can't do it alone! Fortunately this world is full of possibilities for your world-saving squad.

It's all about character recruitment in Citizens of Earth. In total, there are 41 characters available for recruitment, from your mom to the local barista. Simply put, everyone in the game is either a potential party member or an enemy and progression through the game is propelled forward by these recruiting quests or quests to investigate the circumstances of an enemy. These tasks range from quick "check this out" actions to longer hunts for enemies and make up the bulk of the gameplay.

Length of this game is actually something left almost entirely up to the player. While character collecting is one of the most extensive things in this game, it is not actually required. Players could breeze through the plot of the game without recruiting many characters at all if they choose, but they can also lengthen their stay in this world by aiming to fill their roster, exploring all the bizarre character possibilities.

Citizens of Earth offers a very pleasant aesthetic to make your time spent worth while. The art style is different and cartoon-y but fun and the music, while nothing necessarily up for Best Score, is light lending to the overall playful feel of the game.

Set to release later this year, Citizens of Earth will be one to watch for; a tribute to the lighter, more bizarre days of gaming we all remember.

TalkBack / Super Smash Bros. for 3DS E3 Hands-On Preview
« on: June 10, 2014, 10:30:00 AM »

And the 3DS gives us Smash Run.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/hands-on-preview/37734/super-smash-bros-for-3ds-e3-hands-on-preview

The double release of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and WiiU raised as many questions as it did hype. Now, with playable demos available at E3, some of the inquiries about the differences between these two versions are being answered.

The focus of the single player demo on the E3 show floor is on the 3DS exclusive Smash Run mode. Smash Run is a game mode reminiscent of the adventure mode from Brawl, with a 2D side-scrolling set up that pits players against monsters as they run the maze. But that is where it parts ways from what we know. The focus of Smash Run, instead of aiming for an end level goal, is defeating enemies, exploring and collecting power-ups during a five minute time limit. Up to four players can enter Smash Run and compete for the most stat bonus on an expansive map before everyone is thrown in to a single match with their newly beefed-up characters. Some of these matches are straight melee battles while others can focus on things like speed.

Players also have access to various bonuses in Smash Run to make the complete obliteration of their enemies that much easier, such as Smash series items and powers like Warp, Health Recovery and Meteor Shower. A player's use of their powers and items during Smash Run also can greatly affect the outcome. These have to be picked up during combat and heavier characters can actually hold more items and powers than their lighter counterparts.  It's a fun new way to compete with your friends, and because it's just similar enough to something we're all familiar with from Brawl, it's easy to pick up within seconds.

Just as we would expect, move sets for the characters stay the same across Smash Run and traditional modes, with the exception of the additional bonuses. A good combination of each character's moves -- with their bonus powers -- is the trick to a successful Smash Run, and doing so gives yourself the best advantage against your opponents.

Update:And if all this isn't enough, each play through Smash Run is designed to be different, with randomly generated maps and events, and special surprises for locating mystery doors in exploration.

Later I will be demoing regular 4-player melee on 3DS to discover potential other console-specific features.

TalkBack / Zelda Williams Tweets E3 Appearance
« on: May 28, 2014, 08:47:14 PM »

A special surprise? It better be Zelda related...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37551/zelda-williams-tweets-e3-appearance

On Tuesday, Zelda Williams took to Twitter to tease a personal appearance and a surprise at E3. The daughter of Robin Williams is best known to gamers as the girl famously named after Princess Zelda, who appeared in the commercials introducing Ocarina of Time’s 3D remake.

In her initial tweet, Williams simply mentioned that she would be doing something “extra special” and “more details soon”. Later, she responded to a few followers saying only that it wouldn’t be what people think.

Fan speculation surrounds her appearance being tied to the reveal of the Zelda Wii U title, first teased back in 2011, or possibly even the remake of Zelda Majora’s Mask that has been in high demand since Ocarina of Time’s re-release. But since Williams has been mum about the appearance since her only response, it seems we all just have to wait and see.

Loki watch out. There's a new witch in town.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37412/disney-teases-maleficent-figure-for-disney-infinity

Today, Disney's official Facebook page released an image teasing a silhouette of a Maleficent figurine with the tagline "something wicked is coming to Disney Infinity."

This new figurine has no release date as of yet, but will be part of the upcoming Disney Infinity 2.0, scheduled to release this fall. The character may be a launch day release to keep the character connected with Disney's Maleficent, which premieres in North America May 30.

Earlier in April at a live event in Los Angeles, Disney announced Marvel Super Heroes, coming this fall as part of the new Disney Infinity 2.0. Many of Marvel's most beloved characters, such as Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Black Widow, will be introduced to the world, as well as their villain counterparts. This Maleficent teaser marks the beginning of the additional Disney-themed figures and sets that Disney also mentioned during the event.
