Information from the company’s financial reports gives fans a glimmer of hope.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37411/square-enix-considering-overseas-release-for-dragon-quest-x

Dragon Quest X may yet see release in territories outside of Japan, according to information from Square Enix’s financial results briefing slides.

In a slide titled “Expansion of Overseas Business, primarily in Asia,” the company notes regarding Dragon Quest X that “overseas expansion is under consideration.” There are several games listed on the page, and all are specifically denoted as intended for Asian countries with the exception of Dragon Quest X, whose intended expansion plans are left unidentified. While this is little more than a ray of hope for fans of the series waiting to have this latest franchise entry localized for their territories, it remains a positive sign that all is not yet lost.

Dragon Quest X was first released for Wii in August 2012 and has since seen ports to Wii U, PC, and even Android platforms in Japan.  Meanwhile, Square Enix and Nintendo have been mum regarding any sort of release for the title in Western territories despite the series’ long history and highly-regarded legacy with fans across the globe. The game’s nature as a massively multiplayer online RPG makes it a unique and progressive entry in the franchise, but also has been seen as a high hurdle in the way of a potential localization.

Square Enix reported generally positive financial results in its briefing, including a return to profitability with a total net income of 6.5 billion yen (about $65 million). The company has had favorable results with the relaunch of its flagship MMO, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. These factors might have some bearing on the potential for a Dragon Quest X expansion.

Western Dragon Quest fans have been left out in the cold over the past few years on portable platforms too, as a 3DS remake of Dragon Quest VII saw an early 2013 release in Japan, but still remains unannounced for Western territories. Recently Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii reportedly let slip the fact that the “next” Dragon Quest is in development, so perhaps fans will have better luck with the next installment.

TalkBack / Moon Chronicles Coming to 3DS eShop Next Week
« on: May 09, 2014, 04:26:17 PM »

Renegade Kid unleashes the first of four episodes on May 15.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37386/moon-chronicles-coming-to-3ds-eshop-next-week

Moon Chronicles will be available exclusively via the 3DS eShop on May 15, developer Renegade Kid announced today.

Moon Chronicles is an updated version of the Nintendo DS first-person shooter Moon, complete with enhanced graphics running at 60 frames per second, full 3D, and Circle Pad Pro support. The game is going for an “atmospheric sci-fi” vibe to go along with a story-driven episodic structure, with the narrative focusing on investigation of a mysterious hatch on the surface of the moon.

Moon Chronicles’ initial release next week will be priced at $8.99 for the first of four planned Season 1 episodes, with the additional episodes available at a later date as $1.99 DLC.

This first episode is said to feature around four hours of gameplay and comes with a Bonus Mission called Tsukigami’s VR Training, which “helps you perfect your skills, while providing some intense first-person shooter action.” The upcoming DLC episodes are expected to present about 2 hours of gameplay.

While Season 1 is essentially a remake of Moon for DS, next year’s planned release of Season 2 is expected to feature all-new gameplay and story content.

For more info on the game, check out impressions from Zach’s recent hands-on time with the game or watch the newly-released gameplay trailer below.

TalkBack / Hyrule Warriors Coming to Japan This Summer
« on: May 08, 2014, 02:35:52 AM »

The game is expected to come to western territories sometime later this year.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37371/hyrule-warriors-coming-to-japan-this-summer

Hyrule Warriors is slated to be released in Japan this summer, according to reports based on information from Tecmo Koei’s financial results.

Tecmo Koei is the co-developer of the game and will publish it in Japan, where it is known as Zelda Musou, while Nintendo will handle publishing in western territories. In today’s financial results materials, Nintendo included the game in its release schedule, but gave it only an unspecified 2014 release. The Hyrule Warriors name was also labeled as temporary.

Hyrule Warriors was announced in a December 2013 Nintendo Direct as a Dynasty Warriors-style title in terms of gameplay, but with settings, characters, and other elements taken from Nintendo’s celebrated Zelda franchise. However, little information has been put forth about the game since the initial announcement.

TalkBack / Wario Land 4 Coming to Wii U Virtual Console
« on: May 07, 2014, 09:15:00 PM »

The Game Boy Advance classic hits the North American eShop this week.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37360/wario-land-4-coming-to-wii-u-virtual-console

Nintendo has listed Wario Land 4 for release on the Wii U Virtual Console, and its release date is tomorrow, May 8, in North America.

The game marks the return of Game Boy Advance titles to the new release list for Wii U eShop after a week’s absence. Nintendo had been silent as to new GBA releases for the system since the announcement of the initial month’s lineup back in March, though in the meantime Capcom did reveal that they were working on some GBA titles for the service.

Wario Land 4 has already been released on the Japanese Wii U Virtual Console, and the game was also made available to early 3DS owners via the Ambassador Program. There is no word yet as to release in other Western territories.

Wario Land 4 will be priced at $7.99 when it launches in North America tomorrow.

TalkBack / Renegade Kid Teases New Game, Friday Announcement
« on: May 07, 2014, 09:09:00 PM »

Co-founder Jools Watsham has delivered some cryptic tweets in the last few days.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37355/renegade-kid-teases-new-game-friday-announcement

Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham has taken to Twitter to tease fans in regards to its upcoming plans, including development of a new 2D title for 3DS and a possibly unrelated announcement slated for this Friday, May 9.

A May 4 tweet from Watsham revealed the new 3DS project, described as a “new experimental 2D game” that “has pixels and stuff.” He also said development of the game was “part of the healing process” following the failure of Cult County’s crowd-funding initiative on Kickstarter.

Watsham’s other relevant tweet came on May 6, telling fans “some stellar news” is on the way this Friday.

There is no definitive link between the two teasers Watsham has doled out, so it is uncertain as to whether Friday’s announcement will relate to this new game or one of the many other projects linked to Renegade Kid. Treasurenauts and Mutant Mudds 2 are in development with no concrete release date. Even Cult County is still on the table for release in some form, as Watsham has stated that the developer is "discussing other options" for the title.

The most likely possibility, however, is an announcement related to Moon Chronicles, the upcoming episodic first-person shooter for 3DS. A later tweet by Watsham noted that he had changed his header image, then asked, "I wonder why that would be?" The new header features artwork from Moon Chronicles.

TalkBack / Steel Diver: Sub Wars Getting Version 2.0 Update
« on: May 05, 2014, 10:56:00 PM »

New features are coming sometime in May.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37342/steel-diver-sub-wars-getting-version-20-update

A variety of new features and content will be coming to Steel Diver: Sub Wars by the end of May, game director Takaya Imamura has announced via Miiverse.

The development team is referring to the future update as "Version 2.0." There are several tweaks planned, including basic fine-tuning of the submarines' stats and the addition of a new multiplayer stage.

Version 2.0 will also add bonuses for winning streaks in Internet Battle Mode's Matched Skill Battles. Premium Version owners will be able to choose from a wider variety of submarines as they gain levels after the update, and more subs will be added to the game's Online Shop as well. Finally, in reaction to fan feedback, the team has added a feature in which players will be notified and penalized when they torpedo their allies.

A previous update focusing on stat-balancing and smoothing out the online play experience was issued in March.

TalkBack / Cult County Kickstarter Ends Unsuccessfully
« on: May 05, 2014, 10:26:24 PM »

Developer Renegade Kid “discussing other options.”

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37332/cult-county-kickstarter-ends-unsuccessfully

Renegade Kid’s ambitious crowdfunding initiative for first-person survival horror game, Cult County, has ended unsuccessfully.

The developer was asking for $580,000 via Kickstarter to fund multiplatform development for the title, including planned releases for Wii U and 3DS. At campaign’s end, pledges totaled a mere $46,736, less than 10% of what was needed.

Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham took to Twitter to deliver the news and thank backers, but also provided a ray of hope by noting  that they are “now discussing other options” for the game.

Cult County was announced as a 3DS first-person shooter in early 2013, and an “atmospheric demo” was shown off at PAX East shortly thereafter. The title re-emerged last month via Kickstarter in a greatly expanded form, now intended for virtually every modern platform and built around an episodic structure. A $15 pledge would have granted backers all five planned episodes of the game.

Renegade Kid has received criticism regarding the ambitious nature of their campaign. “People tell us we need to reduce the # of platforms and budget for Cult County,” Watsham responded via Twitter. “Only way to reduce budget is to only make episode 1.”

Though Cult County’s status is up in the air for now, the company still has various games in development. Moon Chronicles and Treasurenauts are due to hit the 3DS eShop sometime in the coming months, and the follow-up to Mutant Mudds is due this year as well.

TalkBack / Nintendo: No New Hardware at E3 2014
« on: May 05, 2014, 10:21:44 PM »

A flurry of rumors has prompted a response from the company.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37341/nintendo-no-new-hardware-at-e3-2014

Nintendo has confirmed that no new hardware announcement is planned for E3 this year. The company has reiterated this position to multiple news sites who had reported on rumors that the unveiling of a new console or console iteration would happen at this year’s event.

A combination of factors led to these rumors gaining traction across the internet over the past several days.

First, news began sprouting up that references to a “new Nintendo system” could be found in the metadata for the company’s E3 website. The references were quickly removed from the site’s source code. It was later discovered that the metadata in question had been in the site’s source code last year as well, suggesting it was simply a leftover that hadn’t been cleaned up. However, the rumor mill had already begun churning.

Soon after the story started spreading, an episode of the IGN podcast Nintendo Voice Chat was released containing a short conversation regarding the possibility of new hardware. Comments by IGN co-founder and industry veteran Peer Schneider were widely reported, including his assertion that “they are absolutely going to show new hardware this year.”

While Schneider did note that he has heard rumblings to that effect from at least a former Nintendo employee and “somebody on the third-party front,” the conversation in its full context is highly speculative and wide-ranging as to the possibilities at play, from a new iteration of a current system to some sort of relatively minor peripheral.

Not long after that podcast was posted, a VideoGamer article cited a “third-party publishing source” in its claim that Nintendo would show new hardware and accompanying games at E3. It further asserted that the new hardware was believed to be based upon specs that circulated early in the year for a system called Fusion. The platform would basically be a home and portable console hybrid, with a DS-like portable component and docking station to connect the device to a TV for home play.

Nintendo initially offered its typical refusal to comment on rumors and speculation. Soon, though, they responded with a clear answer regarding the issue, with a company representative telling VideoGamer, “I can confirm Nintendo is not revealing any hardware at this year's E3.” Many other sites’ inquiries were also answered in a similar manner.

As for what Nintendo will actually reveal at E3 2014, fans will find out on June 10 when the company’s Digital Event is broadcast across the internet.

TalkBack / LostWinds Now Transferable to Wii U
« on: May 04, 2014, 11:12:39 AM »

The WiiWare launch title is no longer stranded in last gen.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37329/lostwinds-now-transferable-to-wii-u

LostWinds, a launch title for the WiiWare service in Western territories, can now be transferred to the Wii U.

An update allowing the transfer was issued only last week, despite LostWinds’ long-known status as the most prominent digital-only Wii game players have been unable to transfer to Wii U since the system’s 2012 launch. Even then, a fix was reported to be in the works.

Players will have to go through the standard System Transfer process in order to get the game onto the Wii U, so those hoping to move the title over to their current systems will need to dust off their Wii hardware and let the Pikmin get to work.

LostWinds was released in May 2008 to generally high praise, and a sequel of similar acclaim was issued the following year. Series developer Frontier Developments’ most recent output on a Nintendo platform was Coaster Crazy Deluxe for the Wii U.

TalkBack / Mega May 3DS Virtual Console Release Dates Unveiled
« on: May 01, 2014, 08:37:00 PM »

Mega Man Xtreme is available now, with more to come each week.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37322/mega-may-3ds-virtual-console-release-dates-unveiled

Release dates are now available for a selection of Mega Man titles coming to the 3DS Virtual Console this month.

Capcom calls this month Mega May, and it starts today with the eShop release of Mega Man Xtreme. Originally a Game Boy Color game, Xtreme was a 2001 spinoff of the SNES classic Mega Man X series.

Throughout the rest of the month, additional Mega Man games will hit the 3DS eShop on a weekly schedule. On May 8, Game Boy titles Mega Man II and Mega Man III will release simultaneously. The Game Boy versions of Mega Man IV and V hit on May 15 and 22 respectively. Mega May closes out on May 29 with the release of Mega Man Xtreme 2.

Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge was one of the earliest third-party releases for 3DS Virtual Console, and several Mega Man NES titles have come out for the system. Fans have been waiting for the release of these more obscure Game Boy iterations of the series, however, as they’ve never been re-released in any form.

Capcom has been active on the Virtual Console front, recently announcing that Mega Man Network Battle 3 and other Game Boy Advance titles are in the works for Wii U.

Of course, a multitude of virtual artistic tools will be available, as well as Miiverse functionality for sharing masterpieces with others.

Pokémon Art Academy will be priced at 3,619 yen in Japan. There is no word yet as to a Western release for the title. An announcement trailer for the game has been posted, and can be found below.

In Europe, they get to choose from a selection of TEN free games...
Now, I don't want to complain about a free game, but I already have Pikmin 3, Wind Waker, and New Super Mario Bros. U... Which leaves me with the dreaded Wii Party U. If I was across the pond, I could pick up Wonderful 101, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, or Game & Wario, all of which interest me but are iffy enough that I haven't been able to justify dropping the cash on them just yet.
Oh well.

Everything should be back to normal in just a few weeks.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37294/nintendo-systems-upgrade-affects-hardware-repairs-online-store-and-club-nintendo

Nintendo’s various support services, its online store, and Club Nintendo rewards will be unavailable or significantly altered in the coming weeks due to a systems upgrade.

The upgrade began on April 28, and its effects are rippling throughout a handful of key Nintendo services.

Customers are currently unable to create new repair and part orders online. This service is scheduled to resume on May 6. Until then, status information for repairs and part orders from Nintendo will also be unavailable, though processing and shipping for orders placed prior to April 28 will still continue during the upgrade.

In addition, the Nintendo Online Store is shuttered for the moment. Pointing one’s browser to the store URL leads to a “Site down for maintenance” placeholder page with apologies and a link to additional info. The store should be back up and running on May 9.

Finally, Club Nintendo has temporarily disabled orders of physical rewards. Orders for those will resume May 13, but until then they are offering an expanded selection of digital rewards. April’s original quartet of Super Mario World (Wii U), Mario Golf (Wii/Wii U), Art Academy: First Semester (3DS), and Trajectile (3DS) remain available. In addition, players can now get Balloon Fight (Wii U), F-Zero X (Wii/Wii U), Kirby’s Pinball (3DS), Aura-Aura Climber (3DS), and Grill-Off with Ultra Hand (Wii).

Nintendo also notes that their Support Specialists may be unable to access these services, as well, so phone and email customer service seem to be affected by this scenario too.

Nintendo assures customers that they “are working to make this transition quick and to minimize any impact it may have on support service downtime.” There is a website set up to provide real-time updates regarding impacted services, which can be accessed here.

Tell that to Sony, who rode to high sales over the holidays off the goodwill from their press conference.

I think the good will they received was based mostly on the content of their message, especially as compared to Microsoft...

I feel that if Nintendo delivers strong and relevant info to fans and cleans up the technical problems from last year, people will be OK with this for the most part. The question is, do they have the firepower in their arsenal (read: new and exciting game announcements) to satisfy ever more desperate fans?

TalkBack / Mega Man Battle Network 3 Coming to Wii U Virtual Console
« on: April 29, 2014, 01:57:00 AM »

Capcom confirms Blue & White versions, plans for additional titles

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37285/mega-man-battle-network-3-coming-to-wii-u-virtual-console

Mega Man Battle Network 3 Blue and White have been confirmed for release on the Wii U Virtual Console.

Capcom issued a statement to IGN revealing plans for these, and other unspecified Game Boy Advance games, to come to the Wii U. This news comes days after ratings by the Australian Classification Board raised suspicions about a potential release for the games.

"We are working on bringing this and other GBA titles to the North American Virtual Console," a Capcom spokesperson said. "We'll have more information about the lineup in the coming months. For Australia and Europe, we are still in discussions about the release of Virtual Console titles for those markets."

Last week’s release of Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi’s Island capped the first month of availability for Game Boy Advance games on Wii U Virtual Console, and no further GBA titles had been officially announced for the service until now. Thus far only first-party content has been available, so it’s a good sign for the future that at least one third-party publisher is now pledging support.

F-Zero GP Legend and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow were also both rated by the ACB in March, though as of yet those titles have not been confirmed for release.

TalkBack / Denpa Men 3 Release Date Announced
« on: April 27, 2014, 02:45:00 AM »

They will return by wave on May 8.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37271/denpa-men-3-release-date-announced

The Denpa Men 3: The Rise of the Digitoll will be available through the 3DS eShop in both North America and Europe on May 8, Genius Sonority has confirmed.

The game will be priced at $9.99 and €9.99, respectively. Additionally, a demo for the game will arrive on May 1 and will, in typical series fashion, allow players to transfer progress over to the main game. Players of the series’ prior installments may transfer characters from those titles to this newest entry as well.

Denpa Men 3 continues the series’ tradition as a quirky RPG in which players amass a unique collection of the titular Denpa Men via a Wi-Fi signal-dependent AR minigame or QR codes, then battle with them through a variety of dungeons. However, a number of new elements have been added in this latest installment.

For instance, this time Denpa Men may attempt to fight back when players set out to capture them. Also, each Denpa Man will have his or her own unique house, which can be customized by players with decorative items that can be traded with others via an online flea market. Players can even rent out their Denpa Men to those in need and reap rewards in the process.

Denpa Men 3’s release in the West comes nine months after its Japanese debut in August 2013. This is the second Genius Sonority-developed download title for 3DS in as many months, with their last effort being the Nintendo-published Pokémon Battle Trozei.

TalkBack / Re: Super Mario 3D World: Hidden Luigi Challenge
« on: November 26, 2013, 04:36:22 PM »
So... I know I've seen a few of these, but there's only one I remember well enough to give details. In World 3, the setting for the climactic stage is a couple of trains running on parallel tracks. The level is called Bullet Bill Express, I think. When you reach the front of the Bowser train, there's a little platform slightly past the warp pipe that takes you to the final battle (I hope I'm remembering this correctly). If you stand on the platform, the view shifts to a more isometric one in which the fronts of both trains are visible. On the track parallel to the Bowser train is a Bullet Bill one, and running in front of that train is a small 8-bit Luigi. It's small, but you'll see it near the right hand side of the screen.
Also... I remember seeing one in one of those houses in which Sprixies give you a stamp. You know how there are windows in those houses with a nice view? I saw a little Luigi peeking into the house through that window...

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Direct: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
« on: November 13, 2013, 04:26:58 PM »
I wasn't able to watch the Direct because I was at work, though I tried to sneak and watch a bit with no sound at one point. I saw the reveal of a fifth character, but didn't know the context (hidden, unlockable, etc)... Luckily I missed any other spoilers that were shown.

I have to say that I agree with Alex's outrage here, though I will still buy the game. I didn't see the spoilers, for the most part, though I would still play the games in question had I seen them. I just think that it's disappointing how casually key in-game details are discussed prior to launch. While there is more to a game than just this stuff, Alex is very correct that the joy of discovery is at the heart of many a fan's enjoyment of this medium. It seems that a game like this won't be overly helped in sales by marketing with the level of spoilers we're seeing here.

Guess I'll avoid coverage of these games from here on...

95
I gotta say... this is an awesome post-E3 surprise!

However... when will we be getting this in North America? The suspense is killin' me!

The 3DS Batman game is the only thing on this list that I'd count as something of a pleasant surprise... I didn't have high hopes for it until hearing the away team's impressions. Now it's something I'll be keeping a really close eye on. If they can make a strong offshoot of the console series for 3DS, I'll be quite pleased. Of course, if not... I'll have to blame you guys for getting my hopes up. ;)

This is my first Fire Emblem game (and I'm loving it, by the way). So keep in mind my status as a novice when I say this, as I very well may be playing it wrong...

...but I'm at chapter 13 now, and Frederick is still a beast in my playthrough. Everybody says he isn't useful as the game wears on, so I'm wondering how long this can last.

Also, not to step on Josh's toes, but there was a similarly poignant article on Kotaku about Frederick the Wary that people might enjoy.

This is wishful thinking, of course...

...but I think a new Fighters Megamix with franchise representatives from Namco, Sega, and Capcom would be quite cool. Namco brings Tekken and Soulcalibur, Sega brings Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers, and Capcom brings all their fighting games (Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, Rival Schools, etc.). It would be a fun romp.
