BMX XXX

by Jonathan Metts - July 7, 2002, 10:19 pm EDT

Check out some leftover info from Dave Mirra BMX XXX's showing at E3 2002.

Unfortunately the only screens we have as of this writing are just vanilla character shots, but hopefully Acclaim will send us some captures of the actual game in action, with its crazy cut-scenes and such.

In the meantime, here's a little more info from Dave Mirra XXX's E3 fact sheet, which we didn't yet have when this preview was originally written.

Despite its new attitude and adult content, the third Mirra game will not only retain the BMX gameplay of its predecessors but also attempt to improve the formula. XXX features over 2000 tricks (thanks to its trick-modifier system), and new to this year's game are the flatland tricks, which can be done over any flat stretch of land and thus don't require a ramp or any other structure. Z-Axis has brought in flatland pro Chad Degroot to motion-capture over 100 of his signature moves to enhance this aspect of the game.

Dave Mirra, Ryan Nyquist, Dave Osato, Troy McMurray, Mike Laird, and about a dozen other pro BMX riders will appear in the game, apparently unfazed by the game's new demographic skew. They'll be joined by quite a few made up female riders, which are explained more in the original preview below. You can also make your own riders, male or female, with an upgraded Create-A-Rider mode.

Finally, Z-Axis says this year's Dave Mirra will push more than double the polygons of the last game, and all at 60 frames per second. This would be an impressive feat if they actually pull it off; Dave Mirra BMX 2 was already a very graphically competitive game.

Acclaim's Dave Mirra BMX series is the best selling BMX game in the world (over 3 million copies worldwide), and instead of resting on their laurels, developer Z-Axis decided to break out with something totally new with this year's version. Instead of simply adding new tricks and levels, the game's style and design have been totally revamped into the first-ever Mature extreme sports game. THIS GAME IS NOT FOR KIDS.

It's easy to imagine Dave Mirra XXX (now the name makes more sense, eh?) as Conker on a bike. The same gratuitous, over-the-top, extremely immature sense of humor permeates the game entirely. Don't worry, the core gameplay is still very much Dave Mirra and in fact there are new tricks and levels, but on top of that, XXX is vastly different than its predecessors and really from anything else we've ever seen.

Here's a handy example: a mangy mutt is crapping all over the local park, and it won't leave. You ride over to your pimp buddy and he says "Let me get my bitch!" The pimp returns with his bitch...a female poodle. She jumps into a special basket attachment to your bike, and you go off for a ride to the park. Once you do a few tricks to activate the sequence, the poodle will jump out of your basket and go over to the crapping dog. It will get curious, go over and smell her butt, and they'll start humping. Problem solved: no more crapping in the park.

How about one more? In addition to the cast of world-famous BMX riders, there are now several female riders who are very much in there just to look at. You can also create your own female rider in the character edit and make her boobs as big as you want, adjust her clothes to make them tighter and smaller, anything you want. Then you can play a special multiplayer game that boils down to strip poker on bikes. If you can't do a better trick than your opponent, your female rider will have to take off an article of clothing. Eventually she can even get topless, and Z-Axis made sure to show off their elaborate boob-flopping physics.

If that weren't enough, you can collect money in the various stages and use them to go have a good time at Scores, the famous strip club. There you'll be treated to an FMV of a real stripper dancing, and the more money you pay, the more she'll take off.

It would be easy to get offended by Dave Mirra XXX if it weren't so damn funny. The game is very intentionally silly about how it presents all this stuff, much like Conker's Bad Fur Day was. The developers hired a comedy writer to pen all the lines and plot for the game, and from what we've seen and heard, he outdid himself. The game is genuinely funny and ridiculous, and that's exactly the point.

This isn't an M-rating just to show more blood...these guys are going all the way and pushing the rating more than anyone has pushed it before. The language is very dirty and totally uncensored, including the "F-word" and worse, according to Acclaim.

Younger fans of the Dave Mirra games may be disappointed to find that the newest game in the series is targeted squarely at adults. However, Acclaim thinks the success of Grand Theft Auto 3 proves something like this can be successful, and they're going through with it full speed ahead.

Dave Mirra XXX will be released this fall, and the GameCube version will be identical to the PS2 and Xbox ones. Fans of Conker and/or BMX would do well to keep an eye on its progress.
