GameSpot and Nikkei Computer get jiggy with Square...

In news originating from Nikkei Computer in Japan, GameSpot reports that Square has apparently signed on as an official third-party Xbox developer, and the legendary RPG developer is already working to bring Final Fantasy XI to the system. So why should this interest us Nintendo fanboys (and fangirls)? Well, FFXI is a fully online game...known as a Massively Multiplayer Online RPG, or MMORPG. Square wants to get this sucker out on as many platforms as they can, so that they can rake in the monthly fees. The company has already confirmed the title to be cross-compatible between PS2 and PC, meaning that owners of each port can play together on the network servers; it can be assumed that the Xbox version will also be cross-compatible. This all points to something that's been theorized for months now: FFXI could appear on the GameCube as well. This isn't just an issue of Square's loyalties or their past squabbles with Nintendo, it's an issue of them getting their cash cow out to fans of every system. The Xbox news is still unofficial, but GameSpot expects full official confirmation within the next week or so. If and when the news becomes concrete, you can start looking forward to news of the NGC version around E3 in May '01, if not earlier.
