Light the fire up in the night.

It’s another week where the biggest release is already out in North America with the Minecraft Super Mario Pack update hitting late Tuesday evening. But for those who are looking to spend a little money this week, you’ve got options as well, including a game long thought of as a PlayStation exclusive crossing the aisle to Wii U with PixelJunk Monsters. The legendary tower defense title might actually be regarded as a retro title given it came out on PS3 an entire (US) presidential administration ago.

Smaller releases this week include the long awaited (citation needed) North American debut of Chompy Chomp Chomp Party. On the Virtual Console, Konami brings back future pachislot legend Contra III: The Alien Wars for New 3DS (first 3rd party SNES title on that platform), while the Wii U visits the PokéPark.

For Europe, it’s all Fire Emblem all the time this week as the massive 3DS strategy RPG(s) land across the ocean, with only Revelations and the second map pack still to come. Bust out your Lucina amiibo and prepare for months upon months of strategy RPG and eugenics.

enjoy the 60 quid pocket jostle, kids across the pond!

also, it still makes me do a double take whenever I see a Konami VC release.

Has there ever been an official explanation for why the original Contra doesn't get re-released? The other NES/SNES entries have been released on multiple Virtual Consoles, but never the original game.

What makes it even more baffling is the MSX2 version of the original Contra was released on the Japanese Wii and Wii U Virtual Console, but not the Famicom version.  It makes you wonder if there's some kind of weird license issue with the NES/Famicom version of the original which is why it never gets released.  Like some line of code or piece of music isn't offically owned by Konami for some reason in that version.  That's the only thing I can think of since the original NES version of Contra is by far the most popular game in that entire series and would certainly get better sales then Super C and Contra III.

Not that I know of.  I've always heard "licensing issues" as the reason, but I'm not sure what.  My best guess would be the game nakedly rips off the likenesses of Schwarzenegger and Stallone.  That doesn't explain Japan, or Probotector in Europe, nor why it was rereleased twice by Konami on PC and DS.  Maybe they figure no one cares in Japan, who the heck wants Probotector, and they did pay a license when they rereleased it but that would make a VC NES game either too expensive or a loss maker.

Another possibility, MS secured the download rights to all versions of Contra (they are quite different) for a time when it was put on the 360 in 2006.  Konami put it on the VC when the deal expired in Japan since I would assume they get a bigger cut from MSX games and another reason as to the above, why put out a competitor with a smaller cut.

A further note, if it is because they used the likenesses of Schwarzenegger and Stallone without permission I wouldn't expect it to ever be officially confirmed.

Another thought I just had, assuming MS bought the download rights they would have run out in 2010.  At that point in time Nintendo was aware of licensing issues with TMNT and the DKC series, so maybe Nintendo decided no more games with licensing issues.  I don't have the encyclopedic knowledge of VC games to disprove that so just a thought.
