Datel Reveals MAX Media Player for DS

The unofficial PSP add-on comes to Nintendo DS, bringing 4GB of media playing capacity

Recently, Datel released a 4GB hard drive for the PlayStation Portable. Now, a version for Nintendo DS is in the pipeline. The MAX Media Player uses a DS card to load the player software and an oversized GBA cart, which wraps around the back of the DS and contains a microdrive, to store media. Like the PSP version, the microdrive is 4GB in size.

The MAX Media Player software will feature a file browser and includes support for MP3 audio, video, and JPEG images. Also mentioned is the ability to “activate executable programs." Whether this refers to homebrew applications is unknown.

The unit is powered by the GBA port, so no extra batteries are required. Files can be transferred to the HDD unit from PCs over a USB connection. Media Manager software is supplied, which will re-encode video and resize images in order to make them work with MAX Media Player. The HDD unit supports USB 2.0 for faster transfer speeds.

Similar to their GameCube discs, Datel likely reverse engineered the game system to produce their own DS cards, releasing what will be the first third-party solution to not require pass-through hacks. In the UK, MAX Media Player is set to release at £129, though the price for the US will likely be comparatively cheaper. Currently, Datel expects to release the device around the end of March.

Datel is my eternal enemy because of the horribly crappy customer service they have.

Yet this could be neat.
In theory, since this runs programs, I wonder if someone talented enough could build a home-brew internet browser...

Wait.. damn... If I did my math right (and by that, I mean if I pushed the right buttons on the currency converter I used on the internet), this thing is gonna be about $225?

Woah. Never mind here. That price point + Datel's record = absolutly no buy from me.

Though 230 USD is hardly a bargain, this seems interesting.

Couldn't they have gone the route of "removable media adapter in a GBA cart? I just saw a 2 Gig SD card for less than $80...

Yeah, Shecky, I just picked up an M3 NDS/GBA movie player. They have SD and CF variants. Of course, that itself is ~$90...

INteresting. A Video Ipod is $299 tho.

Well if you want to put it into perspective the PSP 4GB HDD max costs 170.

The difference between the 2 is:

DS: Comes with the media software, the HDD connects to the GBA seamlessly, doesnt really alter the size of the DS.
PSP: Comes with a 2x battery pack(to maintain battery life while the HDD is active), connects to the memory stick slot via ribbon cable. In the end makes the PSP 2 times thicker.

So I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up to be 150 - 170 US and thats not bad for 4GB.

EDIT: They advertise the DS one at 129.00 Pounds and the PSP one at 149.90 Pounds. Datel charges 170 US for the PSP 4GB HDD max.

And let's not forget Lik-Sang's own GBA Movie Player. Minus the executable programs (but plus the limited Famicom/NES ROM capabilities), $25 is still a pretty good deal, even with shipping and handling charges. It's especially nice if you already have a Compact Flash card lying around.

I suppose we'll have to see just how much better the movie quality is on Datel's version (I'm assuming it's specifically designed to take advantage of the DS' superior processing power) before we judge though.

I used XE.com's currency converter and 129 Euros came out to be 153 USD...Maybe it's way off..Thought the Euro was stronger than that

I wouldn't pay more than $150.00 on it.

It's allot of space sure but how good is the quality of the product.
I am hoping planetgameube has time to review this thing because its in the maybe pile.

If someone makes a DS web browser, Calendar and organizer options, calculator
etc than it would be totally worth it to buy this machine so I can use it with my ds.

I still don't know however I mean if its to much in price I could just buy a palm/mp3 player...

Until I hear more and get positive feedback on it than its in the maybe pile to buy

Sounds pretty good, if people will buy a play-yan for 80 then spend 100 on a 2gig card
why not just 220-230 on 4gigs and better software and hardware? full screen, better codec support and on and on.....

(using US money there)

Ages: That's Pound, not Euro. A GBP is ~1.75USD.
