FF Crystal Chronicles: Ask a question, get an answer
« on: January 24, 2004, 10:25:57 PM »
I've got the final US version and am playing it like crazy with two friends, and hopefully we can pull in a fourth player every now and then.  We are nine hours into it as of this writing, and that's after less than two days of having the game.  (And keep in mind that we are getting all three of us together at once to play it.)

I've got impressions nearly ready to post, and I'll probably try to capture media on Sunday.  Dan is also about to post his VERY extensive import review, with all kinds of info about the game's depths and single-player experience.

But I know this won't be enough to sate your thirst for FFCC knowledge, so ask me any questions you have and I'll try to answer them!

Is the intro/trailer song with the Japanese female vocals present in the U.S. version?

I just have to know if single player is worth it. Though I think you mentioned you were focusing on muti-player. I already have this game pre-ordered, but so far from what I have heard from some others that have played it, the game lacks in single-player mode.

I am dying to know, I've been wanting this game for like a year now. I'm anxious to see what some of the planetgamecube staff memebers have to say about this game!

Oh, and could you supply a bit of detail how the leveling up system works? I know there are no experience points and I'm pretty curious about it.
My parents told me I would eventually grow out of wanting to play video games.......

Boy, were they ever wrong!

My review is up, both of your questions are answered in TalkBack.  I enjoyed single player myself, since I rarely had access to people willing to play an RPG in Japanese.

Ditching Yae's vocals for the U.S. sucks.
Games should have real-time language and subtitle toggling.

I brought this up in the review talkback, but I'll mention it here too.  Does FFCC support Dolby ProLogic II?

Yes.  The intro scene is very long and gives you quite a sampling of the game's graphics, characters, and environments.  It's one of the best-looking and best-directed real-time cinemas I've seen.  The song plays over it with full lyrics, which are now in English.  The woman has a good voice, naturally, but I think the translation must have been done very literally.  She has to sing quickly just to cram all the words into the rhythm of the song.  It still sounds pretty though.

Each level also has a voiced intro, though I can't tell if it's the same woman.  This one has a light Irish accent and speaks VERY SLOWLY.  The writing for these scenes is, unfortunately, very poor and sometimes downright bizarre.  It's like really bad Celtic poetry.  My friend said it sounds like something Celine Dion would write.

I'll supplement Dan's review with my own take on these questions.

First, the single-player mode can be fun (I haven't played it much though), but I don't think it would be worth most people's time to play the entire game alone.  The single-player mode is mainly meant for one person to go around and build up his character when the other people aren't around.  This is a multiplayer game from the ground up, like Mario Party.  You are really doing yourself a disservice to play it alone, because everything revolves around your interactions with other players.

The leveling up is done stat-by-stat, and also through gaining new equipment.  After each level, the players get to choose a stat upgrade based on what artifacts were found in the level.  Each one can only be used once, and the choosing order is based on how well each player performed in that level.  (It's where your bonus goals come in, like "take magical damage" or "pick up money".  If you want to compete for first pick, you should keep your bonus secret so the others can't interfere.)  The upgrades include things like Strength +1, Magic +3, an extra heart, an extra command slot, and a permanent spell.

Equipment is very important, because it can make a huge different in your stats.  Usually you have to have new weapons and armor crafted by a blacksmith, which requires three things: a design for the item, the materials needed to make it, and a fee for the blacksmith.  The process is not as complex as Dan makes it out to be, if you're playing the English version.  Some designs are for anyone, and some are for specific races, so there is a lot of trading.  Money tends to be tight, so sometimes we end up selling off food (which we rarely use) to get enough gil to afford the blacksmith's fee.  The best equipment requires materials like mythril, which is so expensive to buy that you really just have to find it from defeating enemies.  I have also seen NPCs give away weapons and armor, like when you meet another traveling caravan and they don't need theirs anymore.

Yeah, well you're just starting.  Trust me, when you start looking for some of the higher level upgrades, finding the materials isn't quite so easy anymore.  I know the final battles probably wouldn't have taken me four hours if I had been able to forge better weapons.

I have a question, what does the person who carries the bucket do? Can they attack/cast magic spells and such? Thanks.

The person carrying the bucket can't do anything but walk.  So the others have to protect him.  Of course, he can also set the bucket down and go join a fight or do anything else, but the others will have to stop or someone else will have to pick up the bucket to keep moving.  Usually you'll want to stop to fight enemies anyway, so then the person with the bucket is free to do whatever until it's time to move on.  Hope that makes sense...it's quite simple once you see it in action.  In my playing group, we take turns carrying the bucket, but usually I prefer it to be with whoever has the map on his GBA.

I know that this has probably been asked a thousand times already, but can the game be played with one player using a GC controller while player two uses a GBA?  I mean the only other person I'd be playing the game with would be my wife, and we're not going to buy a second GBA just to play the game two-player.

I can answer this one and you won't like the answer.  To play any multiplayer you need to have GBA's, a controller can only be used in single player.

You cannot customize characters to that extent.  There are four male and four female designs for each race.

You can have any combination of characters that you wish.  You don't have to have one of each race like most of the artwork shows.

Characters do not speak.  The only vocals are in the intros to dungeons and the opening and closing songs.

I want to know if you can use other weapons than the one's you start out with?
So you can only choose one of the variations and not customize a single thing?

I heard when you and your friends do magic at the same time it can be combined into one big attack? What if your playing with three friends can you choose a computer to hold the bucket for you?

As we've explained, you get new weapons by getting the designs and materials for upgrades and paying a blacksmith to make them for you.

For the second question: no, there's no computer player except in single player mode.  If you want to do that, you can just drop the bucket.

Yes, this is true.  When you use magic, you have a targeting icon to aim it with.  If you and someone else put your targeting reticles on top of each other and use the spells at the same time, the spells will combine to make something new.  You can also mix focus (charge-up) attacks with spells.  Here are some examples:

Fire+Fire=Fira
Cure+Cure=Curaga
Fire+Life=Holy
Blizzard+Thunder=Gravity
Thunder+Focus=Thunderstrike
Fire+Focus=Flamestrike

I think there are even more complex combinations with three or four ingredients, but we haven't gotten them to work yet.

Ok,  I just want a straight answer: I don't have any GBAs, and I don't know anybody that can play this game with me, so I'll be playing the entire game by myself, it's still worth to get it?

Do you think this game is more like Zelda or a final fantasy game?
