Hahaha. I think I will get it next package. NoT chrono trigger styles is it? I hated the positioning system making half the spells useless.

oi! thou must NEVER knock chronotriggers awsome battle system, its awsome! but yeah its somewhat like chronotriggers, BUT not many spells really make it 'annoying', most are direct damage or pure area effect, only 1 tree of spells, either way the spells are pretty weak, everyone gets the same, its the awsome special attacks that make it worthwhile, and those are either area effect or direct, no position crutial.

it has pirates, PIRATES, doesn't get much better than that

For me, Skies of Arcadia is comparable to Grandia 2 on the PS2... a not-so-great game.  If you own a PS2, there are better investments like Final Fantasy 10, Kingdom Hearts, Xenosaga... or even older psone classics like Chrono Cross.  Buy these games first before you buy Arcadia.

If all you own is a Cube, then Arcadia is the best you can get.

.

Also for how it plays, it's your standard turn-based RPG.  Enemies on one side... you on the other side... each taking turns hitting each other.  The only twist on this formula is that the characters move around on screen to make the animations a little more exciting.

The story is okay I suppose, but rather sparse.

The voice-acting is quite annoying (one word phrases like "Yeah!" or "Right on!"... probably due to the Dreamcast's limited CD space).  Silence would have been better.

And the random battles are exceedingly boring.

(On second thought, even the mediocre Grandia 2 is better than Skies of Arcadia.)

I enjoyed the Dreamcast version, which is on my top 5 Japanese RPG list. I haven't played this version yet, though I'm thinking about picking it up.

Even if it's no improvement over the old version, I would still recomend it.

Honda: IMO SoA:L wipes the floor with Grandia 2! G2's story slows down too much in the last third.

The battle system is standard turn based stuff. Only real twist is the SP-bar: You accumulate Spirit Points each turn, those are used to cast spells and special attacks. However, there is ony one SP-bar, but four characters, meaning you have to decide whether to use that big overkill attack or rather healing your party.
As always, stat changes and spells are utterly useless, you should rather use a special attack instead of a spell. There are death spells, but those only seem to work when the enemy is using them against you, any enemy you can't kill in two hits is immune against that kind of spell...

Air battles are radically different: You get a 4x4 grid, each column representing a phase in the next turn. Each phase has an indicator how strong the enemy attack will be and both you and the enemy can do one attack/spell/defend/whatever per phase. They are a nice change because the sheer number of random encounters quickly makes you sick of the standard battles.

I think it took me 48 hours to go through (Grandia 2: 28, the last ten of which were not as good as the rest).

I would have never gotten Vyse The Legend without a guide. I HIGHLY suggest you use one, for the treasure chests especially, since you need ALL of them to get that title.

Edit: Oh yeah SoA:L is a great game. One of the best games I've ever played. Excellent storyline, good gameplay, and, uh... Ramirez is hot.

I put Skies of arcadia before all of those games mentioned (I haven't played through kingdom hearts though, to be honest) but below Chrono Trigger/FF3(VI)
its my 2nd fave RPG, chrono trigger is the best,   FF7 is up there along with it.  Xenogears is also very good.

Chrono Cross on the other hand, utter crap compared to CT. I'm sorry, but they just removed everything htat was good about the first game and went overboard making it worse.  (its not ALL horrible, just crap compared to CT)

Skies is an aquired taste i guess, and as much as i hated the system, it was better than FF8/xenosaga/chrono cross etc.

Syl, he said a lot of things like that.  I just can't believe that anyone could honestly be that wrong, so I am just assuming that he is just trying to goad us into fighting with him.

I'm neither right or wrong.  It's called an OPINION.  You've never learned that word?

So IMHO, Skies is not that great.  It's not bad either.  It's just so-so.

1) Yes, it's very good.
2) It's only $10 at Best Buy.

So to me, that says "MUST BUY!"  That is, if I didn't already have it......

Yes, the random battles get annoying, but the game has a certain old school charm I really appreciate.  I thought the game was worth the full $50 back in February.  So yeah, buy it.  NOW.

What are you on about? Remeber when you went into battle with multiple monsters as you fought them in real time hey would move around the screen and then there would be attacks that attacked in a straight line damaging everybody between the player and the target monsters. You knew which monsters were going to get hurt because every time you looked up an attack it would come up with a bunch of arrows showing you who was going to be damaged. I really, really didn't like this at all. Verging on hate. This system made more than half the spells useless as the monster were never in position to use them and  certin spells like the one that horizontally went from left ro right on the screen damaging everything in the line of attack, was only useful for that boss that came up alittle after you aquired that spell.

Bisicly it came down to this. Use the line of attack spells which you couldn't use most of the time which its only advantage was that it had lower mana cost than area spells which hit everyone but factoring in the number of monsters hit/killed in one hit by an area spell compared to a line of attack spell, the area hit spell wins as you would only use area spells when there were more than 3 monsters as that was as many weapon based attack you could perform on average at any given time.

Althought to give Chrono Trigger some credit I did like the combo system

Ah, I get ya now.  I thought you meant combo attacks didn't work unless the characters were in the right positions.

The thing about the directional attacks is that they aren't supposed to hit every enemy on the screen.  That's why they are cheaper to use.  I found that since the enemies moved around all the time, the directional attacks would often be an economical solution to hit 2 enemies at once.  Really, those spells really were only meant to tide you over until you got to the uber-spells like Luminaire, Bolt 3, Fire 3, Ice 3, etc though.

Now luminaire, that was an attack! But never the less they were pretty redundant even back then as most of the time they were too weak to make the kill making you better off just using whatever weapon you have as that would usually kill most monsters in one hit.
