Yes, it is a great and a very long game. I finished with 50 hours, and that's without doing anything after I beat it. The story was interesting and the graphics were ok--not great, but they didn't affect gameplay very much if at all. The ship battles were very cool and a nice departure from the normal combat. My only complaint would be the random battles, IMO there were too many and they got annoying at times (although on the Dreamcast version there were MANY more random battles).  If you like RPGs then I would definitely recommend SoA: L.

Obligatory dissenting opinion: Too dull and drawn-out for my tastes. Steer clear if you only like wild, flashing seizure games like myself.

I just got it a week ago, and it seems pretty fun.  The battle system is cool, with the different elemental types and whatnot, although inevitably some battles can be one by hitting A for attack repeatedly (I actually did this a couple times when I was tired and wanted to close my eyes).  The storyline seems a bit weak so far, though - very predictable and heavy-handed, but then again I am not very far into it.

Molobert - Is it really that long?  Because I've almost eliminated the first of four columns of the journal, indicating I'm almost 1/4 of the way through, yet I've only played for five hours.  Does the journal progress slower later on or something?

Yea, I think that unless you are using a walkthrough or are rushing through it it would be at least 40 hours. I roamed around a lot and did sidequests, so you might complete it in less time. I don't know about the journal because I never read it, but I can guarantee you're not going to finish it in 20 hours.

The only reason i didnt buy this game was because I completed  the Dreamcast version earlier.  I know theres a new character, but i dont know if thats enough to buy the Gamecube version! I should buy it when its 19.99 or something, payed for it already anway.  I enjoyed this game more than a lot of the Final Fantasy games.

Rob - I got my copy used for $25.  Not too bad.

Somewhat off topic: I love the GameCube DVD cases!  They allow people to store manuals in a convenient place - thus, even used, I usually get a manual in good condition with my games.

It took me 100+ hours to finish playing it though I tend to go through these games slowly and did most of the side quest stuff. I'd recommend it.

obviously i didnt complete everything, but i wasnt rushing through the game either.
it is a great game though. if i manage to find the time, i plan on playing through again to try to complete everything.

Skies is not a "great" RPG, but it qualifies as "good".   The flaw with the game is that the random battles are not challenging.  As someone said earlier, you just keep hitting attack.  But the characters are cute and the bosses neat, and the ship-to-ship battles a nice twist.

For the GameCube, Skies is as good an RPG as you can get.

If you own other systems (PS2 or Box), then skip it.

YES!!!!!  The game is awesome.  I have been playing RPGs since Final Fantasy on NES, and this one is definately in my top 5.  A lot of RPGs lack the fun factor that other games tend to have, but this one is actually quite fun to play, and has a plot to match the best of them.  The ONLY problem I have with the game is the ridiculous amount of random encounters, but it's still better than on the Dreamcast.

I agree with Grey Ninja. I rented it last spring and I thought it was very good.

I couldn't find any copies anywhere near where I live so I ended up buying it off Amazon.......... hmmm..... anyways, I just received it yesterday!!! I was so excited to add this great game to my library.

from another point of view, i never play rpgs because i find them boring, but after playing skies of arcadia, i really have gotten into turnbased games and rpgs. i also agree that the random battles became annoying, but it was minor compared to the overall enjoyment of the game. i seriously think it may be one of my personal top 10 and this is coming from someone who didnt like rpgs. i would consider it a must buy for the cube.

SOA: L is currently the best RPG on the Gamecube currently in the US. So if you can find it get it. (It pretty rare around here.)

Honestly, I thought Skies (Dreamcast anyway) was absolutely phenomenal...once you got far enough in.  Honestly, for quite a while, the game is kind of sub-par.  However, once the game gets itself together, and the ship battles and ship customization start being fun, and the normal battles more interesting, and the plot picks up, then, well, it gets great.

I think that plot was never great, actually, but I must admit, I had a fondness for all the characters that's so rare in RPGs (too often, I find myself hating or not caring about RPG characters).  I especially liked that one guy you could get who had 2 guns...and kicked ass...and was loved by the ladies...yeah.  I relate to him.
I like the Gamecube.

Funny that this topic should pop up now, because I just decided to start playing SOAL again. A must buy, as far as I'm concerned.

For some reason, this game seems like what FF3 would be like, if it were in 3D. I was surprised by how long this game is. It's probably about 40 hrs if you don't do any of the sidequests, and 50-60+ if you're really thorough. Good stuff.

One of the best RPGs I've ever played.

Ok, call me stupid, but no one here has exatly said how is game works, just mostly a whole bunch of positive ranting. In an effort to keep spoliers down to a minimin can some one tell me what is the meat of the gameplay?

Urkel, I am glad I am not alone in thinking that it's the spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI.

oohhhboy, it's a traditional RPG.  Combat is turn based, and untimed.  The premise of the game is that you are an air pirate who is sucked into a huge adventure.  I really don't know how to explain it better than that, but you get to explore a vast world that is very lifelike and is filled with completely awesome scenarios that I don't want to spoil.  Some of the parts of this game just make you fall in love with it.

i disagree, allthough i dont have a ps2 or xbawx i know there isn't anything like skies on xbawx so even if you do have an xbawx i would pick this up if you can, i know i have one of only like threehundred released in australia

personally i didn't find hte random battles annoying at all,  but they did get a little troublesom when i was flying around looking for discoveries, which is very rewarding mind you,  and the wanted battles are excelent, the wanted characters actually level up as you do, so you can't just level your self up to rediculously high levels and totally obliterate them, which i thought was a great idea.

im hanging out for a sequel

PIAC, he was obviously just trying to bait us with that statement.  The mere thought that the Xbox would have better RPGs is just like advertising that you have a very high number in your IQ, but it has a negative sign out front.  As far as the PS2 is concerned, that's a matter of opinion.  IMO, I think that Xenosaga is the best RPG on the system.  I have not finished either Skies of Arcadia or Xenosaga yet though, so I am still uncertain which I prefer.  They are very different games

Skies of Arcadia is a AA title according to me, its one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and I can't quite see why, because I personally dislike the fighting system quite a bit.

The overworld map is the best one I've ever seen, for any game, EVER.  Its just so HUGE, and it came across perfectly throughout the game, complete with all the little nooks and crannies you can search in for finding more discoveries.

The optional fights are quite difficult if you fight them when theyre first allowed to be fought, which is definately a good thing for me,  its very hard to find RPG's that have difficult fights, and this one definately had a few of those.

The characters, though a few are annoying, I actually could relate to them more than most other games I've ever played, even if they were shallow, and the story was VERY cliche, it was a damn good story because of the characters that made it.  I'm most likely going to play through this game again very soon, I had 65 hours on it last time, and I want to get Vyse the Legend next time I play through it....
