GBA Games Worth It?
« on: June 24, 2003, 06:47:20 PM »
Alright, Im a moderate gamer I guess you could say (I have about 15 GC games) and I was wondering if a GBA or GBP would be worth it?  I can get a used GBA for slightly lower than a new GBP, but Im leaning towards the GBP.  anyway, are the games for it worth the $50 for whichever I buy?  the games Im most interested in are Phantasy Star Collection, Golden Sun, and Breathe of Fire II. . . so do you think those games would be worth $50 to play?  or should I buy say WindWaker or Star Fox?  oh well, thanks in advance, lol

Thats a hard one.  You see the GBP and Zelda are well worth the $50.  The GBP itself isn't a game however, so you will end up spending more money on games and stuff.  Plus side is that GBA games are cheap as dirt.  You can get used ones for around 10 bucks.

So if you have only $50 get zelda, because it is a single payment for a great game.  But if you have more money to get the GBA games go for the GBP because in the long run you will get more fun out of it.  In a perfect world you could get both.  Much like me!!  Not to brag or anything .

Well I have $290 lol, but of course not all of it goes to video games.  I was thinking the GBP is a one-time investment, and--like you said--the games are dirt cheap.  and plus, with the left over $240 (supossing I spent it all) I could buy a ton more GBA games than GC.  one drawback though, there's no way to carry all the games (GC and GBC) in one small case like the GC game case.

oh yea, any other games you would highly recommend?  I was also looking at LOTR:  the Two Towers; is it any good?

On GBA?  Goodness no.  Unless you see a really good review, avoid licensed GBA games entirely.

On of the biggest mistakes i made was buying LOTR: The fellowship of the rings on GBA. The game was horrible, short(even thoguh cover said 20+ hours of gameplay) and otherwise boring.

I cant believe people cant make even a decent game from the greatest story ever written...

Golden sun 1 (and 2 i guess, haven't got it yet) and Metroid Fusion are must haves for GBA owners, pokemon r/s are also if your into it (and you damn well should be its awsome!) the castlevania games are also top shelf, they all get over 9's in reveiws (ive only got the first one how ever, circle of the moon). any of the SNES ports are top stuff, (personally i prefer the snes originals, but thats not for everyone)

i love my GBA more than my GCN

Im definately getting Golden Sun and maybe Fusion soon after.  hows Breathe of Fire II?  no one has said anything about it on here but IGN gave it a pretty good score (8.3) and it sounds pretty cool too.  Im also thinking about Mario World 3. . . just too many games to choose from!  lol.  the Castlevania games dont really interest me, nor does Advance Wars but Im seeing all these good reviews of them.  I might just get that Bruce Lee game too

Yeah... I could use a hand picking out a game or two.

I'm going on this really long trip (40 days) and I want some multi-player GBA games to pass the time with my sis... preferably single-pak ones because getting two games for multi-play is just expensive.

I'm asking for the good and the bad outside of my knowledge. I know firsthand that some really suck, like Advance Wars single pak for instance. Other single-paks are really good like Kirby's Adventure and Super Mario Advance 2 is ok.

Thanks in Advance... which could be a very poor pun.

Some games have a very good single-pack multiplayer mode, such as Mario Kart Advance: Super Circuit. Which is awesome to play with friends. You can kill time very fast with it, of course you're going to need two GBA's and a Link Cable.

And Advance Wars single-player doesn't suck, I've easily played more than 100 hours with it, just to have every S-Rank in the War room. I still haven't completed it. If you're a strategic nut, this is definately a game for you.

If you like platform games I would choose SMA: Yoshi's Island and for RPG's I would choose Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis.
Let me know that you think.

As for me would you choose F-Zero Maximum Velocity (like that name) or Castlevania Circle of the Moon. They're bot great games, but I don't know which game will be more fun. driving at 500 km per hour or vampire-hunting with a whip, hmmm tough choice. Help would be appreciated.

Oh and Nathan, I found Breat of Fire II mediocre, not as good as the first one. The graphics and the translation into English also turns me of. Golden Sun is way better and if you're into strategic RPG's, it will soon be paradise for you my friend.

alrighty, perhaps I'll get Advance Wars instead then.  one more thing, are there any GBA game that support Dolby surround sound, by chance?  lol, I really dont want to have to sit through terribly repetitive music on my TV

heres the games I want so far, tell me if it sounds pretty good:
Golden Sun
Metroid Fusion
Golden Sun 2
Tactics Ogre
Super Mario World 3
Pokemon Sapphire (just maybe)
Advance Wars
Phantasy Star Collection (maybe)
Breathe of Fire II (if I cant find anything else)

Im not going to buy every game for $30, so I'll buy them in the order of their price-drops, but that is pretty much in the order I want them

Oh, ah.... just to avoid confusion I didn't mean that Advance Wars single-player sucks--I actually love it. Just the single-pak multiplayer sucks. Only one map available, a few minor units and no battle animation. It suck.

So any other good single-pak multiplayer games? How's it work in Super Circuit with one pak anyway? Thanks.

Yeah, I'll add my 2 cents.

F-Zero: Max Velocity is all about gameplay mastery. Graphics and sound are very good but you are mostly going to be concentrating all your energy on memorizing tracks and perfecting your cornering. I would say it's a hardcore game. I found the learning curve really difficult and eventually returned the game for an exchange but I'm just impatient sometimes... other people can really get into it.

Odeix, you just link two GBA's, put the cartridge in and turn the one with the game one. Select single pack (I don't know what it's exactly called, I have the Japanese version, but it's in the menu. Then you are asked (correct me if I'm wrong, I can't read Japanese very well) to turn the other GBA on. Then it's starting to load. Everyone plays as Yoshi with a different colour and there are four tracks to choose from. The animation is less smooth of Yoshi, but there are weapons avaiable (not all of them), but I have to say that it's the best single-pack experience of them all for it's size. And it's even more fun if both of you has the game. Every track is avaiable and you can race with your buddy, that is totally sweet.

I got a GBA as soon as it came out, along with a handful of games, but I honestly have played few GBA games enough to count for anything.  Now that I have a GB Player, I hope to get them out and get going in them, once I finish up a couple GCN games.  Of those I have played, though, I very, very highly recommend the two Golden Sun titles and Metroid Fusion.  F-Zero Maximum velocity ruled, but I didn't play it much because of difficulty seeing.  GBA was hard enough for me to see, to begin with, but I tended to move the GBA as I tilted this way and that with the turns, too, adding to visibility issues.  I really want to whip it back out soon.  Castlevania: Circle of the Moon and Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance ruled, too.  A real gamer can't go wrong with a Zelda title, either, and Donkey Kong Country (out yet for GBA?) kicked so much nuts.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

If whatever I just posted sounds rude/hateful/whatever then you probably read it wrong, but I will insert apology here, anyways, just in case.

I just grabbed my GB Player yesterday, along with Golden Sun (which I got new for $19 at Circuit city). That game by itself is worth the $70, IMO. Better than any GC RPG I've seen yet.

That game just sucks you in, especially on a big screen. I stuck it in at like 4:00 PM for the first time, and then I looked up and it was night-time.

I think there should be a section on PGC dedicated to which GBA games translate well to sit-down console games. To me a game like Wario Ware (which was on display) might be a fun diversion on a handheld to pull out while waiting in line, but I can't see myself honestly sitting down to play it for a long stretch.

The GBP is a must own just for the RPGs though. It transforms the Gamecube from having one of the weakest RPG selections on the market to one of the best.

I agree with HolyPaladin.  Zelda: A Link to the Past is an all time great, and I would highly recommend it to anyonewith a GB Adavance or Player.  Oh well, good luck with your selection!

iv been thinkign about these games Advance Wars, Advance Wars 2, Castlevania: Circle of the moon, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, Golden Sun one and 2, Metal Gears Solid: Ghost Babel(GBC), Metroid Fusion, Metroid Zero Mission(when it comes out), and Pokémon Ruby. Whats really odd is im not really that interesyted in many gamecube games coming out and i think Gameboy player like makes up for it.

How can you not be interested in upcoming games?  No F-zero, Mario Kart, Mario Golf,  MGS:TTS, FF:CC, Geist, Pikmin 2, 1080 Avalanche, Rougue Squadron 3, Viewtiful Joe, Soul Caliber II, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life, or Sonic Heroes?

No, I see what you mean.  Recently, my GBA has been getting alot more attention tham my GC, but that's about to change with all the great releases coming out.

For GBA, I reccomendAdvance Wars 2.  But be warned, an easy mode would have been welcomed.

Or a movie, for that matter.  I can't believe how many people pretend they know stuff about the books, watch the movie, and say that the movie is true to the book.  So many lacking things.  And even some drastically changed things.  I won't tell you what they are.  Go read the book and find out.  Now.
