Though ultimately I find that I'm not impressed by games that I figure Nintendo would have given me anyway.  If I can say "if you didn't make it, someone else would have" then it's just not that impressive.
but you can say that of anything really

Well if I want to be super-cynical, sure.  But if they were working on Mario Kart... we KNOW Nintendo is going to make a Mario Kart for the Wii U.  If they asked Retro and Retro refused (assuming they even could do that) Nintendo would just go to another developer and ask them to make Mario Kart.  Retro's involvement has virtually nothing to do with whether or not we get Mario Kart U.  But anything that involves more creativity on Retro's part would be more distinct and then it's harder to say that anyone else would have created it.  I could probably say that if Retro didn't do Metroid, someone else would have got handed the franchise, but Retro's take on it was so unique that I don't think any other dev would have given us that resulting game.

I suppose Retro could be given Mario Kart and then do something truly amazing and original with it, but the series is so safe and coventional I cannot imagine Nintendo allowing it.  Metroid Prime benefitted from there not being a 3D blueprint of the series to follow.

Not really sense Prime 3 was a million seller.  Other M was the only Metroid game of its kind.  All Other M under performing will do is hurt the chances of an Other M 2, but not the entire franchise since different Metriod games were more successful.  Just like Four Sword Adventure bombing didn't prevent future Zelda games from coming, just more Four Sword type games.

I just hope 3rd person Metroid with ninja Samus won't be ignored in the future. Action like Other M with the progression and exploration of a typical Metroid should be attempted. Though I have a feeling the next time we get 3D Metroid the developers won't quite know why Other M caused such a ship storm and Samus will be a Retro tank or a retro Samus.

I watched a video of all of Ridley's appearances and when the Prime portions came up I forgot how awesome that looked and felt from behind the visor. Then at the end Other M's portion came up and I forgot how agile and cinematic Samus' movements were when she was fighting. Both are extremely pleasing aesthetically, I just hope we get a game that can make both perspectives very meaningful to a single game.

I'm hoping for a 3rd person game, something like Mass Effect. Action, RPG elements, online multiplayer, etc. They can do futuristic sci-fi, why not give them a chance?

If someone is capable of truly recreating the genesis titles in 3D its Retro. I like the new Sonic games for the most part, I just don't like how Sonic feels more like a motorized vehicle than an actual running creature.

I really hope Retro's game is announced. What I want to see most is Wii U really showing off what they can do. I haven't seen enough from Nintendo showing off. The graphic whore in me really wants this. Granted, for instance: Nintendo land actually has amazing graphics but the art style hides this completely(I figure whatever their using is probably the same thing the zelda demo was running off).

Well the trailer for X was amazing.

Remember this is a huge open world game which always sacrifice character models for the sake of the huge world.  This is why Xenoblades character models were kind of crappy looking compared to character models in other Wii games that weren't open world games.  So if X character models can look this good for a huge open world game, imagine how good other games are going to look.

So in other words, Retro's game is going to look much better then X since it isn't open world, and considering X already looks amazing, yeah Retro's game is going to be almost scary to look at by how good it'll look.

While I agree in principle with "graphics over gameplay", I don't like how it is usually used to excuse lousy graphics.  The mantra means that if one has to chose one over the other, gameplay is more important.  It does not mean the two items are mutually exclusive.

Many of Nintendo's best games from their history were also very visually impressive for their time.  Super Mario Bros. 3 for example is not just a fantastic game in terms of gameplay, it also is a fantastic technical achievement for the NES.  The game was stunning for an NES game at the time.  Nintendo using "workingman's graphics" is a relatively new thing.  Prior to the Cube era Nintendo games typically had impressive graphics for their time.

Ideally I want good graphics AND gameplay because many of the best games from the past combined the two.  Hell, the Super Mario Galaxy games are widely considered the best games on the Wii and, unlike titles like Wii Sports, they have impressive graphics.  While the NSMB games are content with functional-but-unimpressive graphics, the 3D Mario games on the Wii pushed the hardware.  As did Metroid Prime 3, DKC Returns and Zelda: Skyward Sword.  It seems the less "casual" the game, the more Nintendo was willing to go that extra mile, limited only be the decision to go with "weak" hardware in the first place.  Unfortunately because of the hardware I found those looked great for Wii games; they didn't impress me outright like Gamecube games could.

Retro has never made a game with okayish graphics.  They're always impressive for the hardware so we should be fine.

X really didn't impress me all that much. And how do you know what type of game retro is supposed to have?

know something we don't?
