What should Retro make?
« on: May 13, 2013, 10:37:25 PM »
We're less than a month out from E3, and one of the biggest questions still left to answer is what Retro is doing. Retro has an amazing track record, with the classic Metroid Prime and its fantastic sequels, as well as the completely different but just as excellent Donkey Kong Country Returns, which is about to see rerelease on 3DS.

Now, most people would argue that Retro should be making something new, their own creative project. For the purpose of this discussion we're going to take that as a given, so don't just respond with that out of habit. I'd like to know which Nintendo property Retro should reboot, if indeed that is what they were doing. Here's the place to make your case.

Star Fox?

F-Zero?

Ice Climber?

What do you want to see from Retro?

New I... damnit, beaten.

If they had to revive an IP, I'd say F-Zero. Their Mario Kart experience proves that they can do racing, and the later levels of DKCR shows they can do challenge that has been the series hallmark.

(Of course, I'm assuming they're going back to the Metroid/Mario Kart well, but F-Zero is my best case for them.)

There's no one who doesn't want to see Retro make a good game, outside of some kind of die-hard anti-Nintendo fanboy. Which good game would you like to see?

What can I say, I like to encourage interesting discussion. If the rest of you came up with good topics that got people talking, you could be promoted on the front page, too.

I see azeke is back to his "a good game" song and dance routine as if anyone in their right mind would ever want a bad game. Way to add to the discussion, you goober.
So yeah, i still choose "a good game".
That's a given. It's not even worth pointing out. "No, I want a bad game," said no one ever.

Anyway, if I had to pick, either a 2D non-New Super Mario Bros. Mario game or a one-off Steampunk Zelda.
Their Mario Kart experience proves that they can do racing
Didn't they mostly work on the legacy tracks and the one Donkey Kong Country Returns track? Not saying Retro Studios can't make a good racing game (F-Zero or otherwise), but I wouldn't use their experience working on Mario Kart 7 as the reason or anything.

I am repeating myself, because nothing really changed. This discussion went on many times and everything is still the same.

It's just matter of priorities.

Some people don't want to it to be associated with Mario (or with any other existing series) in any way. Because they believe people will point fingers on forums and call them names for playing "rehashes" and that will sour on them on the game despite game's actual qualities.

There are even people who care about this stuff far more than the actual game. They openly admit they won't play the game, but just want it to be so and so (say, mature online FPS) because they want to be proven right (and Nintendo -- wrong) and get more forum e-points.

Some people WANT the game to be associated with some series (say, F Zero or Starfox) because they love characters so much.

Some people want it to be based in some specific setting (steampunk? cyberpunk? dieselpunk? biopunk? dinosaurs?) or in specific genre that they think is underrepresented in current gaming climate.

I don't want to watch or care if forums will burn.

I just want to play a good game, man.

If Retro is making a new Metroid then I would want it to be a reboot of the series much in the same way that the recent Tomb Raider rebooted that series. It would be nice if it was a third person action game similar to Tomb Raider. Lastly, Retro, or Wayforward, could make a 2D side scrolling sequel on the 3DS to compliment the Wii U game.

StarTropics.

They've hired artists and level designers from both Naughty Dog and Vigil, and I can see them taking full advantage of their abilities to make a fully immersive, stylistic, modern new take on the StarTropics series.

Uncharted meets Zelda meets Doctah Jones. Do it, Retro. Shock the world.

I want Star Fox more than any other. With beautiful realistic environments and fast paced online multiplayer that makes people go nuts. The only draw back is Nintendo might purposely make the spoken dialogue bad like in the 64 remake. It wasn't what they said, since it was exactly the same but in almost every stage the delivery from the actors was much worse the original. I suppose since Star Fox 64's one liners are legendary and some parts were corny they took it as bad voice acting. It wasn't perfect but the remake purposely made a mockery of it.

I really don't want a FPS though. At least not in any typical setting we've seen all generation with mechanics that are similar.

Nintendo players and One Piece readers, just better people.

It would be nice if it was a third person action game similar to Tomb Raider. Lastly, Retro, or Wayforward, could make a 2D side scrolling sequel on the 3DS to compliment the Wii U game.

Other M is such a bastardization of Metroid that it practically was a reboot.  It sure didn't feel like it fit with the rest of the series.

I really want something "quest" based.  Do you get what I mean?  Like some games have some sort of quest to them.  You're some character and you go out to accomplish something in some videogame world.  It doesn't have to have a great story but there is some narrative.  The main Mario, Metroid, Zelda and Pokemon series all all of this type.  Your character goes on some quest whether it be though sequential levels or an open world.  Mario Kart, and racing games in general, don't have that, even if they have characters.  It's more like a sport.  The Wii Series does not have that.  Tetris doesn't have that.  Fighting and rhythm games don't have that.  Those game are effectively pure gameplay.

There is a place for games like that but I find I get bored of those series as they don't really have new places to see.  Quest games can always give you the same gameplay in a different world and seeing the world can often overcome derivative gameplay and still feel like a new experience.  A new track in Mario Kart of F-Zero isn't enough to do that and it's hard to update the gameplay.

So while I would prefer a new IP I'm fine with:
Mario platformer or RPG
Zelda
Metroid
Star Fox
Kirby
Fire Emblem
Pikmin
Kid Icarus

But not with:
Mario Kart
F-Zero
Wii Series
SSB

You get the idea.  I feel a "quest" game is the only way to really get any personal creativity from Retro.  Unless they really came up with some gameplay ideas, current Mario Kart games could be made by any group of code monkeys under Nintendo's supervision.

Though ultimately I find that I'm not impressed by games that I figure Nintendo would have given me anyway.  If I can say "if you didn't make it, someone else would have" then it's just not that impressive.

Super doubt we'll ever see StarTropics again, but the staff pick ups seem to be a pretty good tell as to what kind of game they're making. Really don't think it's going to be a racer or Star Fox, and I don't think Other M would exist if there were any mid-term plans for Retro to tackle Metroid again (unless that batshit Metroid x Star Fox rumor rises from the dead and becomes reality).

They should make what they want to make, because a game they're passionate about making will end up the best.

With that lame answer out of the way, I'd like to see them do an FPS game. Nintendo have the best controller for shooters, but there are hardly any good games to make use of that. I wouldn't want them to try to chase the "modern" shooter that's overdone today though, those have a lot of problems. I think they'd do something more unique with it, or it would be closer to the classic shooters like Perfect Dark or TimeSplitters.
