Grab Yo Doritos and Mountain Dew the VGA nominations are in.
« on: November 15, 2012, 04:07:54 PM »
http://www.spike.com/events/video-game-awards-2012-nominees/voting/game-of-the-year

The Spike VGA nominations are in. I have to say going by the list its really more balanced and diverse in games than past years.

However there are still some things I find odd with the list.

1) No Halo 4 on GOTY
2) Only 1 3DS game under handheld games
3)Having a system that isn't out yet on their. (I understand why they did it, but if NSMBU beats Xenoblade.)
4) On the downloadable game list only one PS3 game. (Which will probably win anyway that or fez)

I'm betting The Walking Dead is going to sweep the show. (1 its my favorite game this year, and the walking dead is hot **** currently and spike wants the visability.)

Also damn Samuel L jackson is hosting for the foruth time.

Why would Halo 4 be nominated when it JUST came out? I know the VGA's are such a joke that no real gamer takes them seriously, but nominating a game that just came out last week would have been very bad.

I took a brief look at the nominees and was disgusted at some of their nominations. I hope one day the video game industry gets a serious awards show.

AC3 hit two weeks ago and its nominated for GOTY.

I'm wondering if anything next gen related is going to be announced. Spike and Gametrailers have been oddly silent about what's going to be revealed beyond the new last of us trailer. I remember last year Geoff was hyping the Vgas with a screenshot once a week on twitter for each game in late october.

There are several games on the list that haven't even come out yet, so that's not a very good argument against Halo 4 being there.

Unfortunately, the Spike website is such a den of filth and debauchery that my rather generous web filter at work is currently blocking it, so I can't see the list.  However, I believe I saw somewhere that 343 Studios is nominated for Studio of the Year, and they're the studio that made Halo 4. So it would be really weird if a game from a so-called "Studio of the Year" wasn't nominated for Game of The Year as well.

Well, they did make last years Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition, though I doubt that is enough to nominate them. The Halo 4 thing was an example, I don't think other recent/future games should be nominate either. The whole VGA's are a joke.

The lists look actually pretty balanced and the awards advisory board has, from what I can tell, very respectable folks on it.

This may not be the total sham I thought it was. I mean, its about as good a barometer of quality as, say, the Academy Awards but that's not really a high bar.

The nominees for Best Handheld/Mobile Game alone is terrible. It may not be as bad as some years, but it's still quite obvious that the nominees are based solely on marketing and not on the quality.

Microsoft is going to be live streaming it on Xbox Live with smartglass interaction as well.

Its weird how there are third party games under best 360/PS3 when there are more than enough exclusive 360/PS3 to not have thrid part games in those catogories.

I remember when VGAs first started.  It was so disconnected from any gaming scene I was familiar with that it was clear that videogames weren't just for kids and geeks anymore - and that's not really a good thing.  Gaming has become mainstream but not in a way where it is treated with some level of respect.  It's basically considered just mindless entertainment with no artistic value and the fact that THIS is the closest we have to an awards show demonstrates that.  I would either have legitimate mainstream acceptance like literature and film and music have or I would rather the whole thing be an underground cult hobby.  Right now we're in between which is pretty much the worst of both worlds.  You're no longer a weirdo misfit for liking games, but rather a low brow douchebag.  It's like if you said you like music and the 99% of the people you met interpretted that to mean you like American Idol.

OK, now to break it down:

Game of the Year
- I'd toss out AC3 and Mass Effect 3, and in their place I'd put Xenoblade and Mark of the Ninja. This has been the Year of the Downloadable Game, so I think a 3-2 downloadable to retail would be a perfectly accurate view of the Industry this year. My pick from my modified list would be Xenoblade, and my pick from the actual list would be The Walking Dead.  It's hard to say how this one will go this year, but I think Mass Effect 3 will win out because it's Spike TV and Mass Effect 3 has lots of shooting.

Studio of the Year - I'd toss out 343 Industries (c'mon...Halo 4 just came out, and it's not even a Game of the Year contender), and in their place I'd put either ThatGameCompany (Journey) or Monolith Soft (Xenoblade). My pick from my modified list would be Xenoblade, and my pick from the actual list would be Telltale Games. Of these 4 studios, I think 343 Studios will win because it's Halo (though to their credit, I'm playing the game right now and it seems pretty well-made so it might be warranted).

Best Xbox 360 Game - Out with the multiplatform titles (everything but Halo 4), in with the downloadable titles (Dust: An Elysian Tail, Mark of the Ninja, FEZ). My pick from my modified list would be Mark of the Ninja, and my pick from the actual list would be Dishonored.  However, Halo 4has this sewn-up because...you guessed it: it's Halo.

Best PS3 Game - Likewise, out with the multiplatform titles (everything but Journey), in with the PlayStation 3 exclusives: Starhawk, Retro/Grade, Tales of Graces F. From this modified list, I'd go with either Starhawk or Journey, and my pick from the actual list would be Journey. Picking the actual likely winner on this list is actually pretty tricky, but I think Spike will be inclined to give it to Assassin's Creed 3 because it's a bigger title than Dishonored and I don't think that game will win more than 1-2 other categories

Best Wii/Wii U Game - I don't like Wii U games being on this list either, but let's be honest: if they didn't do this there would only realistically be 2 games on here worth being nominated for Wii Game of the Year: Xenoblade and The Last Story, with possibly Rhythm Fever Heaven as a 3rd pick. As you might guess, I pick Xenoblade as my winner here, and Spike might actually give the win to it.  No, sorry...just joking. There's a Mario game in the list, so that'll win even if it's not out yet.

Best PC Game - This is actually a pretty good list, but I give it to XCOM: Enemy Unknown. However, Diablo 3 will be Spike's pick.

Best Shooter - Another good list, and from my time with it I give it to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, which will also be Spike's pick.

Best Action Adventure Game - After tilting my head a moment at largely FPS Dishonored being called as "Action Adventure game", I'd give this one to Dishonored, but it won't win. The fix is already in for Assassin's Creed 3 from Spike.

Best RPG - a mostly predictable list, though I'm surprised to see Xenoblade get any love at all here. Naturally, Xenoblade wins my vote, though shooter Mass Effect 3 will get Spike's.

Best Multiplayer Game - OK, I'm sure it's a good MMO, but Guild War 2 gets knocked off the list for me and gets replaced by Starhawk, which also gets my vote.  From the actual list, I'd probably go with probably Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 just due to the sheer amount of multiplayer content there.  This is the Call of Duty award for good reason, and it will continue to be Spike's recurring pick.

Best Individual Sports Game - I don't care, but this looks like a decent list. Spike will pick SSX.

Best Team Sports Game - Ditto.  Spike will pick Madden NFL 13. Because it's Spike.

Best Driving Game - This looks like a decent list, but I don't care who wins. Need for Speed Most Wanted will probably be Spike's pick.

Best Song In Game - I wish I could remember more vocal songs in games this year, but aside from the Linkin Park song this seems a decent list.  "I was Born for This" from Journey is my pick (though that Beck song is really good, it's only really good in the context of the level it was designed for), and considering all the love for Bastian last year I could see Spike picking it as well.

Best Original Score - I'd throw out Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Max Payne simply because I haven't played enough of one and none of the other. In their place, I'd put Retro/Grade and Starhawk.  My winner is the same either way, though: Journey.  I think Spike will agree.

Best Graphics - This has been and always shall be a BS category, and AC3 and Dishonored being on this list is a joke.  I'd probably put Asura's Wrath and Xenoblade in their place for variety, but oddly enough I'd probably have to go with Halo 4 as my winner on this due to the fantastic art design from the former Metroid Prime guys.  I also think Halo 4 will be Spike's pick.

Best Independent Game - I don't have a problem with this list, and Mark of the Ninja's my pick. I think Spike will pick Journey.

Best Fighting Game - I really don't care who wins (though I'd pick Persona 4 Arena), but this seems a decent list. Spike will pick Dead or Alive 5 because...girls in skimpy outfits.

Best Handheld/Mobile - OK, LittleBigPlanet and New Super Mario Bros. 2: OUT. In their place, Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Final Fantasy Theatrhythm.  Sound Shapes would also be out in favor of Paper Mario: Sticker Star. From my modified list, Final Fantasy Theatrhythm would be my winner. From the actual list, I'd go with Sound Shape. Spike will pick New Super Mario Bros. 2 because it's a Mario game, regardless of quality.

Best Performance By a Human Female - Seems a decent enough list, and Jennifer Hale as FemShep gets my vote. I think Spike will agree, as she's won this award before IIRC.

Best Performance By a Human Male - None of the people on this list really struck me with their performances, though I suppose Dave Fennoy gets my vote since he is pretty good in The Walking Dead.  I'm going to guess that Spike goes with him as well.

Best Adapted Video Game - Ok, what's Epic Mickey 2 doing here? What, exactly, is that game "adapted" from? I'd put The Amazing Spider-Man in its place, and either way my winner is The Walking Dead. It will be Spike's as well.

Best DLC - Granted, this wasn't the most inspired year for DLC but nothing on this list jumps out at me so I voted for Portal 2...because. Dawnguard will get this for Spike.

Best Downloadable Game - Good list here, though I'd putMark of the Ninja over FEZ any day. I'd give this one to The Walking Dead. Spike will probably go with Journey.

The Rest: Outside of Most Anticipated Game (Bioshock Infinite), I don't really care.

Overall, this is probably the least-offensive list Spike's actually put out.  Hell, PC games are actually represented this time! I still have no faith whatsoever that this will be a good show.

The thing is, some of the games aren't out yet, but they will be out by the time the actual voting happens, and the people who nominated them have most likely already played good chunks of them.

I'm confused as too why you keep asking why Halo is on the list, yet you have no problem with AC3 and BLOPS2 which, both have came out in the same time frame.

Also what's wrong with a best graphics award? Look at what 343 and Naughty Dog has manged to push out on 7 year old hardware.

Also by adpated they probably mean by a lisence in general, which is why Epic Mickey still counts.

I sadly agree with most of your points as to what spike will pick.

Because I changed my mind on these games over the 30-45 minutes it took me to write that post (besides, I was more mocking that a "Studio of the Year" candidate couldn't even get their big game in Game of the year contention).   :P: : :   Plus, even though all these releases came so close together, people have at least had a chance to play a lot of AC3 by now.  Halo 4 just came out last week, so it feels "too soon" for me.  As for Call of Duty, there's really no point saying "no" to that game's inclusion, as Spike will never let a year go by without one of those games in the running. In an ideal world, I'd have excluded Black Ops as well.  But since it is here, I considered its merits.

Because what does "Best Graphics" mean, anyway? Best art design? Most technically polished? Most visually interesting? Smoothest animations? What?  It's an extremely vaguely-defined category, yet the most visually interesting games each year very rarely get nominated for, let alone win, that category. It's a category that's always won by the shiniest or most popular game.  And you can forget about 2D games even being nominated.

For example, what's AC3 even doing in this category when there were games like Asura's Wrath; Xenoblade; Dust: An Elysian Tail; etc. also out this year? It's a game that apparently doesn't even run that well and really doesn't look that great technically either.

I don't have any problem with officially recognizing the best-looking games of the year, but "Best Graphics" is just a bad category without further specificity.

What's AC3 doing in the best game catgeory.

Also have no problem with Mass Effect winning any awards, barring the last. Five minutes of the game its easily a GOTY contender.

Like I said, it's been an extremely weak year for retail games (with most of the major titles seeming to either get delayed into next year or disappoint on release), and Spike seems to have a major issue with letting downloadable games have a major role at the awards.

I have major problems with Mass Effect 3 that extend beyond its abysmal ending, such as the total lack of satisfying payoff to situations through the game and the way that a series about people being "more" than mere numbers reduces every person you meet...to sheer numbers (the incredibly underwhelming "war assets").  It's a game that felt like it promised a great deal more than it was willing to give, so to call it disappointing is an understatement.  Plus, for a game from Bioware, the writing was pretty mediocre at best.
