Hudson going away isn't a big deal IMO. For years they have been owned by Konami anyways, so Konami could keep releasing them anyways.

Oh, Ty. You and your cat drugs...

Though, I'm almost inclined to say this very well could happen if core gamers don't latch on to the system in its first year or two. Could be a very rough console gen for Nintendo next go around. I sure hope not, though. I want 'em to succeed.

They could still print money from casual suckers even if the core support isn't there. That's something that's already happened on the Wii. If it happens again on the Wii U Nintendo will be doing just fine. Its only the core fans who will suffer.

I guess I meant that more in terms of mindshare among the gamer populace. I think if Nintendo fails us this next gen, it could very well be over for Nintendo as far as the core gamer goes.

No doubt at all that the company is going to be financially successful, though.

I think it's possible that Nintendo retrenches and survives if they have a disastrous generation with little to no third party support. We've seen them do it before with the N64 (35 million worldwide userbase) and GC (20 million worldwide userbase). And I think as recent threads on this board has shown, there are still many Nintendo fans who really loved those systems, so it wouldn't be all bad. I just hope that the Wii U plays out better than that.

I really hope so, too.

I just want a Nintendo console with all of their fantastic first-party support, an excellent serving of all the major third-party releases, and a complete, competent online eShop and network infrastructure.

Gimme that, Nintendo, and I'll be as high as a kite. :)

Alternatively, the Wii U might only get the low-effort spinoff games if if the developers are forced to use the touchscreen controls.

Developers won't be forced to use the touchscreen controls, I think there were games at E3 that didn't use it. At most, they might have to have something displayed on the screen. Besides, the DS and 3DS did not suffer because of it, and only crap like licensed games would have less effort because of it. The Wii only got so many spin-offs because graphically it couldn't handle straight ports.

I can't help but think that it was mandatory for DS games to have touch screen features, but I might be imagining it

Mario Kart DS didn't use the touch screen in any way, did it?  If one of Nintendo's most popular games didn't use the touch screen, I can't imagine they required others to use it.

If 3D isn't required on the 3DS even though it's in the freaking name I doubt any features on the Wii U will be required.

I could definitely see some quick and dirty ports of 360 games without touchscreen support coming to the Wii U.  You can use four pro controllers after all and that's pretty much a slightly modified 360 controller.

I know plenty of people will turn up their nose at the idea, but I'd love lots of straight ports to the Wii U. I'm a one-console gamer, so I definitely don't see this as a bad thing for my personal gaming experience.

YOU are not required. The games play themselves.

The 3 in 3DS doesn't refer to 3D. It simply means its the 3rd DS system (the short lived DSi counts as the 2DS).

DSI (individual) was actually the thrid DS.  You had the DS/DSL/DSI/DSIXL.

3DS is actual "3D system" for nintendo systems.  DS stood for developers system though the public called it for Dualscreen.  That's info is from nintendo's website.

Though nobody put's the N (in front) but the full name would be N3DS (nintendo 3d sytem).

WII (Wireless Interactive Interface)  Not sure what the U means.

Lite and XL models shouldn't count. The DSi was different than the other revisions because it added online downloads and a built in camera and other things.

I'd agree that Lite and XL models don't count but I'd say that DSi was more like DS 1.1, not DS 2.  Sure it added some new features and DSiWare but the retail games were all still regular DS games.

Whether or not Nintendo meant the name to mean 3D or not, it seems that's what the public is going to think it means regardless.

ULTRA!!!!!!  They took it out of the Nintendo Ultra 64 so they could add it to the second Wii. Brilliant!

It's probably best to say the DSi was to the DS as the GBC was to the GB.

Not really, Game Boy Color was a new system and not just a re-design.

GBC had a minor bump in specs, same with DSi.  GBC had about less than 5% of all games made after it was released exclusive to it.  All other games could be played on GB, same with DSi and DS.  GBC was released 2 years before the GBA was released.  DSi was released 2 years before the 3DS was released.  GBC looked exactly the same as the GBP outside of a battery bulge.  DSi looked exactly the same as the DSL, outside of the camera.

How are they not similar?
