New Super Mario Bros. U
« on: June 07, 2012, 03:07:42 PM »
I'm warming up to the game. I love the new detail they gave the backgrounds, and the level design seems more interesting.

Boost Mode seems like a fun way to get casual gamers to participate. It is kind of cheating though, since you could use the assist blocks like a bridge, extending them over all the traps on the ground.

I am extremely disappointed that there is no level editor in either the 3DS or Wii U versions of NSMB. The touch screens of the 3DS and Wii U would make creating your own levels a breeze. Nintendo has a huge opportunity to go after the LittleBigPlanet players, yet they fumbled it again.

I am also confused by the naming of the NSMB games. It should be like this:

NSMB (DS) = NSMB 1
NSMB Wii  = NSMB 2
NSMB 2 (3DS) = NSMB 3
NSMB U (Wii U) = NSMB 4

The games should be numbered in the order they were released. The 3DS version is the 3rd NSMB game, so it should be called "New Super Mario Bros. 3". Or maybe Nintendo considers the handheld and console NSMB games to be separate from each other.

They should be named in a way that shows what the game is about. NSMB Wii isn't really an upgrade from NSMB. Sure it added multiplayer, but aside from that, nothing. NSMB 2 at least seems to want to change some of the mechanics of the game. NSMB U is accenting the fact that it's on the new system and had system specific features. In any event, it's Nintendo's decision. It's not like the Metroid Prime series are numbered in line with their predecessors (neither is Other M).

You must hate Assassin's Creed and GTA's naming schemes. ****, Final Fantasy has FFX-2 and FFXIII-2.

As a matter of fact I do hate the naming schemes of AC and GTA. But GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas are all part of the same era.

GTA 4 is a different era using new technology, and the DLC episodes were viewed as expansion packs, because they tied into the main game.

I really found the level with the Starry Night background breath-taking. I wonder if you'll be able to play as Miis outside of multiplayer, because that'll be really awesome.
I am extremely disappointed that there is no level editor in either the 3DS or Wii U versions of NSMB.
While a level editor would be really, really cool, there would honestly be only 1 out of 20 user-created levels that are any good. And if they are good, they'll be titled something immature so then they'll have to be taken down. :P:

Nintendo has level editors in the Mario vs DK games for DS. Nintendo has to approve every level you upload to their servers for public viewing.

Also, LittleBigPlanet allows you to report inappropriate levels.

Nintendo has done level editors before, so what's the reason why they can't do it with a mainline Mario game? Creating levels and sharing among friends / the world is something I've always wanted to do in a Mario game.

I have little-to-no interest in this game. I'm sure it will be well-polished but I can't stand how easy the New Mario series is.  It's almost a joke.

Give me some old school difficulty that makes me want to break my controller Nintendo.

I played the game a few times and really enjoyed it. The look of the game was fantastic. It was just super duper clean, barely noticed any jaggies or anything like that. Interesting design for stages and the flying squirrel was a lot of fun.

Shaking to use the power ups were still present, but again I threw out the idea for developer feedback that we should at least have the option to use only buttons.

I did not catch that! Yippi!

When I had the game pad all I did was manipulate the characters. Didn't get to play as one.

Yeah, that only works in single-player mode, unfortunately. I really hoped they would fix that after last year, but apparently not.

Most 2D Mario games are easy.

Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World are both incredibly easy games (except for SMW's Special World). I can beat Super Mario Bros 3 in my sleep. I can beat Super Mario Land 2 in an hour.

The only truly difficult 2D Mario games were The Lost Levels and Super Mario Bros 2. Super Mario Land 1 was difficult because of the terrible physics; Mario had no momentum in that game.

Assuming it supports the Pro controller, it should work in multiplayer as well provided you're using those.

Super Mario Bros 3 is easy, up until the last level...and then it can be quite challenging, unless you went through the entire game without skipping anything.

I didn't beat Super Mario Bros 3, until it came out on the Gameboy Advanced.

Anyone think New Super Mario Bros. U will be released the same way NSMB 2 was, both digitally (eShop) and retail?

The "old school" games were only hard because you were a kid and you were bad at a game.

I can 100% SMB3 no problem now, Mario was ALWAYS easy, and that's not a goddamn problem.

And you prolly shouldn't even be playing games if the DIFFICULTY is your deciding factor.

I've beaten Mario 3 without losing a life. That game isn't that hard. NSMB2 isn't noticeably easier than any of the older games (not counting the Japanese 2, which I don't think anyone wants these games to be as hard as) and I wouldn't expect U to be either.

Maybe interesting story: I broke my neck a few years back, and after I got out of rehab I had a lot of time to kill. I got NSMBWii and given how unresponsive my hands were it basically made me feel like an 8-year-old again. Getting all the star coins in the extra world forced me to repeat stages over and over again until I could make my hands work well enough to max them out. Felt pretty similar to how hard the Special World in Super Mario World felt when I was a youngin'. Anyway, if you want that charge back from Mario, break your neurology!

I think you overestimate how easy Super Mario World is/was.  My wife and I had a blast re-playing Mario 1 - 3 together.  I introduced her to Super Mario World, and she was completely lost.  Eventually got frustrated from not being able to beat a level, and quit.  That game feels so much different than any of the prior games, and while I can blow through the entire game in a day only dying because i'm rushing too much, I bet it poses a much larger challenge to most people who didn't grow up with it.

on Mario U, I'm looking forward to it, if just for the multiplayer so my wife and I can play through it.  My misgivings about it seeming too samey don't overshadow my want for a console Mario game that my wife and I can enjoy together.

I think SMB3 would be more difficult to beginners, especially Dark Land.

The art looks better, not necessarily fresh because it's ultimately still the same basic NSMB style Nintendo has even using for over 6 years. I don't mind too too much, but I won't give Nintendo more credit there than they deserve.

Also, Bucken-Berry and Ala-Gold... Boo-urns...

So far this is the game i am most exited for, unless third parties announced games such as resident evil 6 and metal gear rising for example, because mass effect and batman are old games that inhave no interest in purchasing them again.
