Getting into E3; How Difficult Is It To Do?
« on: April 28, 2012, 09:43:45 PM »
I really want to know how hard is it to get into E3 for someone that doesn't have any direct ties to the industry?

What are the requirements needed to get into E3? And have any of you ever been? or planning to go this year?

You have to have some sort of proof you belong. Have articles about games published for at least a year or so, on a consistent basis. The guy that runs VGMaps.com, JonLeung, was denied access this year even though his site is very busy. But he doesn't write articles, just participates in his forums. He made the offer for me to tag along if he got accepted... darn it all. Caterkiller was even gracious enough to take me in for a few days.

Jon did make it in the year that the Wii was shown off, but I believe the year after they cracked down on who was allowed in.

I guess besides being an insider you you've just got to have the hook up. But once you are registered online and such that's it, when you have your badge you have your badge and that's it, you are free to come and go as you please with no one hassling you.

Would have been nice having you over Bustin. Maybe next year! I've got this great super secret free haunted parking spot that I park in every time I go to Anime Expo or E3. I'm always afraid my car is going to disappear every time I park, but it's been 4 consistent years and I'm still going strong!

I was invited by a 3rd Party Manufacturer a few years ago.  Planned on going, but then my car died and I had to get a new one.  Was sad.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

You can apply right on the E3 web site. When I did it I had to provide a scan of my photo ID and NWR business card and links to articles I've written on the site.

you've written articles for the site? this site? NWR?

I haven't actually had them printed yet; I just sent in the PDF file of it. That reminds me, I need to do that before E3.

Basically what Insanolord is saying is that you need to fake some credentials and they don't have to be too legit.

I've fabricated press passes before, but those were for events much smaller than E3.

Still, I say try your luck if you can't get through the real way. "Rent" a nice camera from Wal-mart and try to find what the press pass looks like and forge the hell out of it. Get a nice sleeve/badge necklace and walk in confidently. It's worth a try. And it's not like they'll throw you in jail.

If all else fails, what you could do is wait by the entrance at E3 until you see someone who looks similar to you about to enter the building, then club them over the head and drag their unconscious body into the bushes and steal their pass and their clothes. If it works out right they won't wake up until after E3 is over and by then you will be long gone. :)

I knew someone would say that and I knew that someone would be you.

Unless you actively destroy **** or cause an outright panic, you'll just be dismissed. Taking the time to actively prosecute you is not a viable option when you have thousands of people to keep an eye on or potential illegal activities going on inside.

Actually just approach the gate with boxes of free "goodies" and let the guards have a few.  My father works at clambakes and companies always leave tons of "goodies" around and I end up with 2 tons of the stuff each year.  Some of it is useless junk but some of it is kinda neat like the collapsable frisbee.

I like that this thread started with a legitimate question but quickly sunk into Funhouse territory.  :P:

I'll put this in spoilers since it's not the funhouse, you've been warned.

Just convince the powers here to change three articles or reviews from a year ago into your name (for a limited time of course) and use those as proof that you are legitimate.  Then you can get the badge and they can change the name back after E3.  It's easy.

I kind of enjoy the turn this thread took. It made me laugh.

In all seriousness, forging won't really work. They're pretty serious about checking badges. You might be able to get away with it, but I doubt it would worth the risk.

My advice? Apply for NWR. If I don't respond, pester me until I give you an answer. It works even better if you catch me at the right time, and you do something to prove to me you're easy to work with, enjoy Nintendo, have a good work ethic, and write well. Just ask J.P./James Dawson/Patrick/Alex Culafi/etc.

Or do what louieturkey said...except that won't work this year because we're bringing a full team to E3.
