Remember to smite me.

Was I smited because I made a joke here? Or was it something I said in another thread?

Neither happens.

Bricking systems would be idiotic give the rate of false positives inherent in any such detection system.

Developers could use piracy as an excuse to abandon the platform, but it'd be nothing more than a scapegoat. Piracy is rampant on all systems and always will be. It's better to appeal to actual customers than waste time and money worrying about potential sales.

 :P:

That was the joke. No surprise that someone took it too seriously though.

Funny that I got hit with a negative for being disappointed to see hacking happen so quickly. Guess someone on the boards here was really looking forward to flash cards on 3DS. I stand by my opinion though: the vast majority of people who benefit from systems being hacked are shameless pirates too cheap and/or lazy to pay for their entertainment. Not all... but the overwhelming majority.

I assumed you were joking, but figured to air on the side of caution and take it at face value. If it makes you feel better though, I didn't smite you for it.

Whether or not pirates benefit from a system being hacked, the actual platforms don't suffer much. Money will still be made, because most of pirates would have never been customers anyway.

What sucks about being smited is you never really know who did it or why they did it. It would be nice to at least know the reason. Oh well, I guess the cowards can hide in their anonymity.

Oddly, the smiting thing doesn't much matter to me. You want to leave a negative, or a dozen negatives, go ahead.

It's just funny (as in "haha" funny) that out of all the dumb things I say, calling out hackers as people who enable piracy and are generally a disservice to people who simply enjoy gaming is what gets any reaction. Even if what Morari says is true about pirates not being people who would spend any money otherwise - and it probably is true in many cases - hacking still ends up causing more grief than gain for the average consumer.

Welcome to my experience with this site's karma system.  Some people just really like being pricks and hide behind the karma system rather than facing a statement (or person) they don't like with some modicum of courage or pride.  It used to bother me, but the constant smiting for every little thing I do or don't do has become so commonplace that I just don't care anymore.  I suggest you do the same.

Yeah, I agree with you Broodwars generally it doesn't bother me, but this time I can't help but think I was being smited because I made a joke and someone thought I was serious, but it also could have been something I said in another thread and I simply don't know. So I asked why and then I got smited like 6 more times.

I wasn't really complaining about it. I was just asking why...

UB, you should move all of this derailment to the smite thread. I just recently bumped it, so it shoudl be easy to find.

But since we are already derailed.
One reason why the smites stay anonymous is that even if the smiter revealed who and why, the person that was smited would likely get in a jealous fit and do retaliation smites just because.

Now if there was a way to atleast know what post where being smited and there was an option for the anonymous smiter to leave a comment as to why they smited, then that may be good, but I doubt the smiter would take the time to explain it anyway.

Now slightly back on topic
Hackers aren't all bad so you probably got smited by someone that doesn't like you lumping all hackers into one malicious group.
That would be like calling everyone in prison a violent criminal, or everyone that smokes herbals a wasteful drain on society.

B&M - I would, but some of the smite-sobbing is tied directly to posts discussing the topic at hand and I want to try and preserve as much of the flow of conversation as I can.  I considered proposing a "Smite Thread" - and making it a rule that if you want to complain about getting smited, you *must* do it in that one thread and that one thread only... but I digress.

On topic - curious how this'll play out.  I have a gut feeling it won't last very long.

What good is it to smite me when I am hundreds of points in the negative and will probably never be in the positive again? Isn't that like beating a dead horse?

Now, if you were to reset me karma back to 0 and then smite then it will mean something... Or better yet just scrap the whole thing entirely and then you will never hear anyone complain about it ever again.

There are only two people on here that I find myself consistently smiting. Last time I checked, Chozo is not one of them. ;)

Really though, the system is imperfect. There should be no smites, and applauds should be tied to individual posts, not some overall rating. That way, good posts can be picked out. Bad posts don't need smites, they just need ignored or reported (if they're that bad).

Just my thoughts.

You say that there should be no smites, yet you openly admit to "consistently smiting" two folks in this thread.  Hypocrite.  Sadly, that's not the least bit surprising.

I agree. That's how it is on youtube where comments can be rated up so they are more easily seen, or rated down where they become hidden by default. Something like that would be great here if it could be done. Smiting or applauding individual posts is a great idea, but allowing people to be overall smited is something that is just liable to turn ugly and personal, and there's nothing good that could ever come of it.

Since people like to smite people for complaining about smiting so much I decided to complain about smiting in my signature, so now every post I ever make will be a complaint about smiting. So what are you jerks going to do now? Smite me a hundred or a thousand times and see if I care. Hopefully eventually you all will either grow up or at the very least get bored of it and leave me alone.

What about those of us who have signatures turned off? :(

Seriously, I don't care too much if you complain about being smited - it's when you derail entire threads complaining about some grand conspiracy against you because someone gave you a -1 that may or may not even be related to that thread.

Obviously it matters to you, because if it didn't

1) You would get rid of the thing entirely, which I am all in favor of.

2) You wouldn't constantly applaud one another in your clique or smite those outside of your clique. Its funny how the ones who don't have a problem with it are the same ones who are all in the positive. The fact of the matter is we all have egos and want acceptance, if you have it then fine, but if you are in the negative and keep getting smited its like everyone is spiting on you.

Chozo, seriously...I probably get consistently smited more than anyone here, usually for rather dubious reasons (from pathetic people) that support what you say.  But you need to let this go, as you're getting way more worked up than this system deserves.  As stupid as this system is, no one in charge of the system cares enough to get rid of it, and the newbies are the only ones who take your karma ranking seriously.

Usually it doesn't bother me. When was the last time I complained? Its been months... I just let it slide, but it builds up and eventually it comes to a head. I wasn't even complaining at first. All I did was asked why but then I got smited about a dozen times for that and then it spiraled into this. Those who are saying it doesn't matter aren't the ones getting spit on so its easy for them to say that.

I deleted my signature and I apologize for derailing the threads that I did, and I admit my behavior was a little childish. But with that said, I still think the whole karma system thing does more harm than good. I won't guarantee I won't complain about this in the future, but for now at least I'm done.
