Will the Wii U support Trophies/Achievements?
« on: August 04, 2011, 02:11:13 AM »
As far as I know I don't think anything has ever been said about that one way or another. In my opinion it should be supported because its a standard feature on the competition's systems. The Wii is the only system this generation which does not support Trophies/Achievements. Hopefully the Wii U will remedy this problem.

I hope so. I know some people couldn't care less about them, but I love Achievements (which is a better system to me than the Trophy and Level system of the PS3) and want Wii U to have something similar.

I was thinking if Nintendo wants to call their things something different to set it apart from the other system they could call them "Accolades".

Why not Unagi? I don't see any good reason not to. You may not care about them, but many people love them  and they are easy to put in. No one will force you to try and get them if you don't want. If anything, some games might get increased sales or rentals from achievement whores (think of how many people bought or rented the Xbox 360 version of King Kong, for example).

I've made no secret that I'm a big Trophy person on PS3 (I'm not so much a big achievement person on 360.  That madness has to have a limit somewhere), and honestly the lack of a persistent console-wide achievement system had a big impact of my enjoyment of Wii games.  When I'm playing a game with an Achievement system, I feel an incentive to explore features or try challenges I'd ordinarily not bother with.  Plus, at least on PS3 it's fun to pull up a friend's trophy list and see what they have accomplished in a given game, and then see if I can perform better.  Without one, there are just so many games to play these days that I don't feel compelled to do more than is necessary to complete a game, depending on the game.  Sure, I may still collect all the Heart Pieces in Skyward Sword because I'm a huge Zelda fan, but without a compelling reason to do so Mario Galaxies 1 and 2 can **** right off with their "collect all the stars" challenges.

Unfortunately, Nintendo's been very reluctant to adopt a persistent achievement system, so I don't think the Wii U will have one.

I hope they include one for those who give a flying fadoo about useless schlock, but it can be easily turned off.

*shrug*  I'm fine with achievements and I like having them.  They are an easy way for developers to go "Well we thought this was challenging and we'll give you a Cookie if you do it right."  Like I'm never going to play Pokemon by Nuzlocke Challenge.  I just don't have the want to play by artificial constraints.  If there was an achievement that Told people I beat the game by Nuzlocke Challenge rules then I be more likely to try for it.

Its nice to have a definitive way to say, 'Yes, I did this.  You don't have to trust my word you can just look.'

I do think achievement spam should be able to be turned on and off.  Sometimes I care that you have found the pink puppy other times I don't want to be disturbed.

That being said.  I don't that it will happen.

Sometimes its nice to go through someone's achievement/trophy list just to see how they stack up to what you have done. I think its a part of a competitive thing that many of the Japanese culture don't get. The PS3 wouldn't even have it if it wasn't for the Xbox doing it.

It's a feature that I personally have no interest in.  I actually find it annoying when I'm playing a game and whole thing stops to tell me I earned a trophy.  I don't care!  Just let me play the game!

But it is a standard feature now and Nintendo SHOULD offer it.  They won't because they live under a rock and probably have no fucking idea the concept even exists.  If we're lucky maybe they'll "invent" it themselves independently.  And even if Nintendo has heard of it and plans to offer it, when do they ever do something even remotely competently if someone else did it first?  They'll screw it up because they always screw up the easy stuff.  They could put a man on the moon but would get lost on the way to their mailbox.

I think it is very important that Nintendo offer the feature and do it right because of the message it sends to the core gamers they're supposedly trying to win back.  Core gamers expect this.  If Nintendo doesn't offer it, core gamers won't take Nintendo's claim of winning them back seriously.  If they offer it but in a goofy stupid Nintendo way that no one likes, then core gamers will just assume Nintendo is too out-of-touch with the core audience to properly appeal to them.

There is a big laundry list of stuff Nintendo absolutely has to get right.  All of it is easy stuff that any core gamer would get right.  If they want to win us back, they have to understand what we want.  If they miss something as easy as this, then they don't understand the core market and no one is going to cut them any slack.  Nintendo has NEVER been as irrelevant with that market as they are now.  Being the kiddy company was like a golden age compared to being the casual company.

As pointed out Achievements are very American for all intents and purposes.  Which would fall onto NoA to understand there importance for this market and impress that on the Mothership.  Last I checked though NoA is trying its best to be the most out of touch branch lately.

Considering that this is Nintendo we are talking about, I imagine their Achievements/Trophies would probably be called something like "Stamps" (as found in Wii Sports Resort) or "Badges" (although possibly confusing when referring to a Paper Mario game). Perhaps "Pins" or "Medals". Maybe even "Stickers" if they weren't already a part of Super Smash Bros.

If anything, I'm willing to be that the name comes somewhere from Nintendo's past, if their hardware designs are any indication.

Cards.

Though I take Stickers as long as I can place them in a book in a way of my choosing and they look different for each.  Especially if I could redeem them for actual stickers.

IF the feature even turns out to exist (and that's a big IF), I think they'll go with "Stars".  It's iconic Nintendo and easy to interpret either the PS3 trophy-style or the 360 Achievement-style.

It would be awesome if Mario popped up with his 'Star Get!' Oh man, I can just imagine the irony when you get the star for 300 Head shots or completing all the fatalities in Mortal Kombat.

What do they call them in Mega Man 9 and 10?  Those games have achievements, right?

I kind of like stars for Nintendo's own branding, but it would be confusing in Super Mario Universe when you get a star, thus earning a star for collecting 50 stars.  But wait, is that the 51st star?  No, it's an achievement star.  So why isn't it called an achievement?  Yeah.

If they have to be different from everyone else, they'll probably go with awards.  Nice and neutral, and they can always make the awards look like stars.  Maybe that could be part of a customizable scheme, as long as we're dreaming.  I'd want mine to look like super mushrooms, fire flowers, and stars for bronze, silver, and gold.

Customization loses the appeal.  I want to be able to look and know what they thought was the harder achieves and how many you got of them.

There are only a few games I actually like achievements in but Nintendo really has to include it.  Single player games just need to forget about it because they end up being given out simply for beating the game or doing the bonus levels, things that are already getting done and I enjoy doing.  Team Fortress 2 has achievements that I like.  Just playing multiplayer I keep getting new ones.  Instead of them being the actual goal of the game, which I hate, they seem like a cool extra that I run into during normal gameplay every time I do something cool or new.

If Nintendo were going to do achievements, I'd want it to be something similar to the coins system on 3DS. Instead of earning them by walking with the system, get them through an achievement-type system, but retain the ability to unlock special features in other games with them. Give them a purpose and more people will care.

If I remember correctly Prime 3 had achievements so they aren't as alien as eveyrone makes them out to be.

And Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Wii Sports Resort, and others. No one is saying Nintendo are strangers to the idea, just that they should put a system wide achievements program in like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 has.
