Brood mentioned something about fighting games and their poor training modes and gamespot ran an article about just that, it also mentions to games that have good training modes where Virtual Fighter 4 Online and Blublaz (not sure which one but I'm guessing the latest one).

I thought I should point out that if you're a Playstation Plus member (like I am), you can download Arc System Work's Battle Fantasia for free this month (starting last Tuesday). I have done so, and it's...definitely not up to the standards of something like the original BlazBlue. The CPU opponents can be rather cheap, there's no real tutorial mode, there's no English VA, and there don't really seem to be much in the way of subtitles either. I haven't dug into the story mode, though, but from what I've read it seems to be the blueprint for what eventually became the story mode in the BlazBlue series.

One thing I do definitely like about the game, though, (beside the generally attractive art style) is that the characters' move sets seem to be mercifully small, about 6-7 per character and they're easy to remember. Props to ASW for that. I think I'll stick with the game for a bit and see how it goes.

If I was a hazard a guess for a character with those 2 qualities in one character S-U-P-E-R it would be Gilda since she that does go with her personality and she is a Griffin. Thing is nothing out of the Mane 6 is confirmed yet as far as the roster goes.

My god that is insane. Who knows Rainbow Dash is quick in the show so she could do that if that is how she works. I'll be in the livestream on Tuesday so I guess we will see if they had any improvements to the Pegasi from the BroNYCon build from a month back. Last thing they updated to their website was earlier today was the background music to Rarity's Stage.

So which is the best party game, i.e. which can you plunk a bunch of drunk friends in front of that have never played the game before and have fun? That's what fighting games are really about.

To me the best fighting games series for parties have been:

Smash Brothers Series
Capcom Vs Series. Street Fighter vs X-men, Marvel vs. Capcom, Capcom vs. SNK ect....
Street Figther series
Darkstalkers series

However, I find that the game really has to crazy to enjoyable in a party...too much skill based gaming, makes it less fun for those that are not good at the game and therefore a worse party experience.

Well, at a party nobody but the system owner has experience with the game so a game that requires much specific learning would likely not be fun since the system owner would just trash everybody. Smash Bros is good but learning to recover from being thrown off the stage (the double/triple jump stuff) takes a bit and it's just not fun before that.

That looks like someone turned a beat 'em up into a 1v1 fighter.

There's gotta be a better way to simulate duels than sticking a state machine into each character that the player is expected to move through blindly with button presses.

Mortal Kombat. The very style and presentation of the game lends itself very well to parties. It's great while drunk, and still fun just to watch. You can jump in pretty easily, and all of the specials are pretty much the same easy motion from character to character. The latest MK title also has a 2vs2 mode, so you could accommodate up to 4 people at a time.

Soul Calibur is pretty easy to get the hang of. You can even button mash your way to victory a lot of the time. I'd imagine that the game would get stale fairly quick, however.

If all else fails, break out the Dreamcast and throw Power Stone on!
