Miyamoto Hopes to See Super Mario 3DS Released in 2011
« on: April 20, 2011, 09:11:43 PM »

Mario might be debuting this fall on 3DS.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26110

The new Super Mario Nintendo 3DS game, which was announced back at this year's Game Developer Conference in March, could actually see a release in 2011.

Shigeru Miyamoto recently spoke to French gaming website gamesblog.fr, stating "I promise to do all I can to deliver the new Mario game this year."

Super Mario is being developed by EAD Tokyo, the same team that was responsible for both the Super Mario Galaxy games and Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat.

Currently not much is known about Super Mario. The game is expected to be shown in more detail at this year's E3 Expo.

That sounds really early. I expected a early 2012 release.

There's little doubt the 3DS will take center stage for Nintendo at E3, so it makes sense that they want something like this to be their big holiday title for that system.
This is where I would write something witty or funny if I had any ideas.

Maybe it is a 3D remake of Super Mario 3. Ok, probably not but I can dream.

With the way sales are looking right now, SMB3D would be a very welcome addition to the 3DS library.

Agreed. You'd think they could have at least taken a game like Super Mario Sunshine and then ported it over to the 3DS as a launch title or something. That was what they did with SM64 on the original DS. Of course, SM64 didn't control very well due to the lack of analog stick, but it still sold millions of copies and that sort of control problem wouldn't even be an issue on the 3DS because it does have analog sticks. Since the 3DS is supposed to be as powerful as the GC, why couldn't GC games like SMS have been ported to it?

For the minimal effort of porting those games over Nintendo could have had a much better launch lineup for the system, and sales would probably be much better than what we're seeing.

I'd rather wait for a top notch new Mario title to be released in 2012 than have it rushed to the end of this year.

Besides, you guys do realize that if Super Mario Sunshine was ported as a launch title, you would still be saying "The 3DS has no NEW games I hate you Nintendo" but now with an additional "it's SM64DS all over again." It'll probably be even worse since so many people seem to hate SMS compared to SM64.

While portable ports are usually frowned upon, I think you can get away with it for a system launch. "Something is better than nothing" mentality here.
Also, especially now with Galaxy and Galaxy 2 out, it can be cool to say Sunshine was good and better.

Port SMS? Isn't that what OOT is all about?

I have always been of the opinion that Nintendo should have either got their **** together and launched the 3DS last holiday season, or waited until this coming holiday season. Launching early in the year hasn't done them any favors.

Some of you are wondering what the difference is between launching early and having the system out to take advantage of the whole year and the shopping season vs. only having the shopping season. Well to put it simply: Perception. Nintendo could have dominate the minds of gamers by launching strong with more finished games and a more comprehensive marketing strategy.

Yes they toured around parts of the world and yes they made a few commercials, but I didn't feel any hype...did you? Something was lacking, and that's the games. Few games equal few things to show. Now if they launched with all the games that are going to be ready this holiday season, which I'm expecting to be a lot, it would have been sold out for months on end.

I understand the Tsunami didn't do them any favors though, but I still think launching earlier was a bad idea. It seems like they did it mostly to please impatient share holders.

I don't think most of the creative people at Nintendo wanted to launch 3DS this spring. It was a financial necessity due to to their fiscal year timing and recent concerns among their Japanese investors.

I'd love to see a "Mario and Sonic" game for the 3DS. (And I don’t mean "Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games" type deal. Those were ok, but I'd like them to be in a game facing their enemies of Bowser and Dr. Eggman teaming up.) That'd be a cool game to play.

I'm sure that criticism would have been there. However, despite that criticism the game still would have sold millions of copies and probably would have dominated the sales among the launch lineup. Ironically, many of the people who would criticize it would also be buying it, and that's the important thing.

You also have to figure that SMS is almost 10 years old and was on a console which not very many people owned, so despite it being a port it would have been a new game to the majority of the 3DS audience. I also think that this is the sort of game which would benefit amazingly from some 3D treatment. SMS is a very vibrant and colorful game, so just imagine it popping out at you in 3D. Nintendo could have also done what they did with SM64DS and add in a bunch of unlockable mini games which would have added to the value of it and helped justify it even to those who had already played SMS in the past. Remember how SM64DS added in Wario, Yoshi, and Luigi as playable characters which weren't in the original SM64? Something like that could be done with SMS3DS as well.

Would love to see Super Mario Sunshine ported to the 3DS, it is still my favorite out of the 3D Mario's (yeah I know in the minority, but I adore the game). Stylus control would be perfect for flood and the visuals would be wonderful in 3D.

Even better than Galaxy?

I prefer the more open ended worlds that SM64 and Sunshine had over the more linear ones the Galaxy series offered. So yeah. It is just a matter of what kind of level design I prefer.

I like the more linear worlds because my total lack of a sense of direction seems to translates to Videogames as well.

People would love Super Mario Sunshine on the 3DS because they'd spend all their time squirting water at the camera.

If they were going to port Sunshine to 3DS, I'd expect them to replace the blue coin mechanic with new levels to get those shines. I never finished Sunshine because of those stupid things.

It should be noted that in this interview, Miyamoto also confirmed the reasoning behind the tail on the game's logo.
"The tail you mentioned on the logo -- it's what you think it is. You probably know what's going to happen using that character."

Whether this means Raccoon Mario, Tanooki Suit Mario, or even both making a return, this is undoubtedly an exciting development.
