Do you still buy games for dead consoles ?
« on: January 06, 2011, 07:46:58 PM »
I just bought Burnout 2 and playing it on my Wii. I have also bought Super Monkey Ball, and Crazy Taxi after the fact that gamecube is dead but I still play them on my Wii. What games have you bought for 'dead consoles' ?

Yeah, you tell him that.  And tell him to sell all his games and systems because, just for being himself, he truly has nothing else to play.

I bought a SNES game last year. And not on Virtual Console - an honest to god cart. These things happen when you find Tetris Attack for $20.

I think I actually got that game brand new for that price back in the day.

I bought Killer Instinct for the SNES at a fleamarket a few years ago for like a dollar or something, but oddly enough I don't even have my SNES anymore. I just thought it might have been worth something as a collector's thing. Another reason I bought it is because I let a "friend" borrow it a long time ago and he never gave it back. For all I know the one I bought might actually have been my old one. Its possible, right? I also let him borrow my Super Gameboy and some other games, and I never seen any of those things again. *sigh*

I think the last one I bought was Soul Blazer for SNES. I didn't even really like it. I stopped collecting old consoles and games a while ago. It's a losing battle. My bank account couldn't support it.

Recently bought Psy Ops or something like that, turns out it's not on the list of games the 360 is backwards compatible with. Also I'm still lindying that copy of Battalion Wars I picked up because people said the GC version was better than the Wii one.

I haven't had any real interest in buying old games for polygon-era consoles.  I don't really buy old N64, PS1, Gamecube, or PS2 games.  I have almost everything I want for the Gamecube and N64 and I don't have particular nostalgia for the Playstations.  My handhelds don't get much love these days either even though there are some old Game Boy games I still want (like Donkey Kong).  I just never get around to getting them.

The SNES is my big collection.  Purchases of old SNES games became rare, not due to a lack of interest, but a lack of titles remaining that I still want to get.  And most of those are obscure and expensive, though there are a few "huh?" omissions like Super Mario Kart that for whatever reason I have never bothered to pick up.  Though I did start a thread about a recent awesome SNES pick up I did find.

I got a Genesis to start a second 16-bit collection but it honestly is not turning my crank.  A few months ago I finally got an NES and that has become a new collection (or obsession) very quickly.  I seem to be buying at least one NES game a week and I would probably be scared to tally up how much I've spent.  The only real problems are that the games are clearly more dated then SNES titles and the damn NES is a huge bugger to get working.  My brother has opened up the system twice now to perform repairs and even then it remains finicky.  Funny how Nintendo is so known for hardware reliability now when their first console is easily the most faulty cartridge system ever.  It's very jarring consider the SNES is an industructible brick and every game I buy for it just works like that.

I guess you never knew since you hadn't owned one, but the only person that can get their NES working consistently is the original owner. There's all sorts of tricks needed in order to make it work that only the owner knows.

For example, for mine, I have to insert the game just far enough that if I try to close it down, it barely hits the outer lip. Once lined up, I have to slam it down. That works damn near every time. If not, then I have to blow into the cartridge.

What's funny is that even though I didn't have an NES as a kid, almost every kid at school had one and I played NES games when I visited these kids' houses.  Never once did I encounter anyone having a hell of a time trying to get a game to work nor did I ever hear anyone bitching constantly about how hard it was to get to work.  Yet my friend who has owned his since he was a kid says that as a kid he had to fight with it so it wasn't like something that showed up ten years later.  Was this all happening at the time and I was just such a spazzed kid that I didn't notice any of it?

The NES required it's most recent repair after a day where I had friends over who were playing it.  The next day I tried to play and it was doing that flash on and off thing for every game, even the reliable ones that seem to work every time.  When I had my brother take it apart he noticed one of the pins had popped out the back.  So my friends are apparently such dipshits that one of them jammed a game in so hard that it popped a connection pin out of place.  How can someone be so stupid and careless?

The NES was never a very reliable system, even back when it was new. I've owned three or four systems over the years and the contacts always need cleaned for the cartridge to work. Most people just blow down into the slot, but that creates moisture (from your spit) and makes the problem worse over time. It's best to keep a can of compressed air around.

If I want emulation why am I even bothering with old cartridges?  I can use the VC if I just want the old games.  Suggesting emulation is like suggesting to a record enthusiast to just play his music on an iPod.  It is not the point!

I don't think that's a fair comparison. Audiophiles generally enjoy higher fidelity through the use of vinyl records and superior equipment. You're not really getting any benefits from playing an actual NES. In fact, you're likely to come across a LOT of negatives.

Anyway, the statement was a mere jest... I'll get off your lawn now, gramps. :P

In the NES's case emulating the sound correctly has been tricky so it isn't always quite right in emulation.

But I think having an accurate experience is part of the thrill of it.  I think the same for people that insist on listening to records and using tube guitar amps.  Most of them don't really notice jack ****.  But there is a certain appeal in being a purest.  If you use the real equipment then it is undoubtably exactly like it was at the time.

Yeah, the NES has always been a problem. Does anyone remember the Authorized Repair Centers that used to exist so long ago? I've never been to one but I remember the adverts for them that came with most games. The problem is that the NES was designed like a VCR in order to appear less toy-like than the Famicom... but in doing so, it's less durable. Pushing down the cartridges into the system causes the pins in the system to bend, so eventually they will get bent out of place. So these days you'll have to bend them back into place every so often. You can also get a new 72-pin connector for it from someplace like eBay, and if you find one tight enough then you can get games to work without pressing down the cartridges. They will bend back eventually though because of their design...

Or you could get the NES redesign. I'm not sure if it has an official name but it's often called the NES 2 or the New NES. It's a lot more expensive than a 72-pin connector, but requires less maintenance.

"Authorized Repair Centers that used to exist so long ago"  They still do.  When my WII broke, it went to a repair center right in my city, in fact I drive by it daily without even knowning it was there.  Nearly laughed my ass off when they shipped my WII back with overnight shipping, why bother when it only had to go 3 miles.  Still beats waiting a few weeks getting repaired.

Those are different from the Authorized Repair Centers, as you cannot visit those physical locations.
