3DS Will Feature Handheld Virtual Console
« on: September 29, 2010, 02:25:39 AM »

Nintendo confirmed Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles will be downloadable.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24144

At their press event today, Nintendo announced that the 3DS will feature an online store similar to Wii's Virtual Console.  Titles for the Game Boy and Game Boy Color platforms will be available for download, and Nintendo used Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX as example titles for the service.

Nintendo will also be selling "Classic Games" that feature 3D enhancements. While they were mentioned alongside the handheld Virtual Console, few details were offered, and it is unclear if these games are download titles.  It is likely that these are similar to the 3DS Classic Collection game demos that were available at E3.

Probably my favorite news from the conference. Pretty excited for 3DS.

Hey, Nintendo does an obvious great idea! Nice!

Now I can just sit back and wait for someone with very limited technical know-how to insist that all these VC games should have 3D enhancement while maintaining the typical VC pricing.

I'm a little surprised there was no confirmation of support from third-party handhelds like the Sega GameGear. Regardless, I am very happy to hear that this pipe dream has at last become reality. Bring on Metroid: Zero Mission, one of the two Metroid games I have not had the pleasure of playing.

I'm pretty sure they only announced GB and GBC games for the VC service.  GBA was notably absent.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Well, I wonder how many years it'll take them to bring the 3DS Virtual Console down to 1 mediocre release every 1.5 months.  Still, everyone asked for it, so it's nice to have it there (though I'm sure the games will be just as overpriced as they are on the Wii VC).

And did anyone else notice that the tagline for this when you highlight the topic is "3DS Will Feature Handheld"?   ;)

Where in the news blurb does it say that?  Do you have a link to such an announcement?

How the hell could they add 3D to old black & white 2D Game Boy games?  How do you make a flat image like a 2D sprite pop out of the screen?  I can't even conceptualize what it would even look like.

If they want to have pricing consistent with the VC pricing...

$3 for Game Boy, $5 for GBC, $8 for GBA.

If the wii VC is any indication then we will eventually see third party handhelds on the 3DS virtual console. This is one of the mostexciting things about the 3DS and one good reason to buy it. I just hope tht GBA games find their way onto the service. I would love to replay all the good titles for tha console once again.

that would be ridiculous though.

$2 for GB
$3 for GBC
$5 for GBA

sounds much more reasonable.

I wonder how long it will be before they add Game Gear, Lynx, WS, NGP, G.com, VB, PSP.... (yeah I went there :P: )

and if they're gonna do all that, I wonder if eventually there will be NES, SNES, N64, etc etc from the Wii VC shop too

I recently wrote a post where I speculated what consoles and games would be on the service.

I question some of y'all's line of thinking.

Nintendo priced Game and Watch games at $2 on the DSiWare service.  Do you really think Tetris, Super Mario Land 2, Link's Awakening and the Donkey Kong Land titles are worth the same as a Game and Watch game?
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

That isn't realistic. After licencing and ESRB rating fees, $2 would not produce a profit.

I figure it fits with the Wii VC because NES games are about 10% of their original price. Game Boy games were $30 so that means $3 is 10%. The NES games are also about 60% the price of SNES games at $8; 60% of $5 is $3.

I'm just stating what would be reasonable.
$2 for a game and watch is for those people that [this portion of sentence is missing] and that ain't me.
But then again, I'm also not likely to buy any GB, or GBC games so I'm not the intended audience for this service.

I am sure the other portable systems will be added on, just like the newer older systems for the Virtual Console on WII
