Left 4 Dead 2
« on: November 22, 2009, 04:21:50 AM »
I didn't find a topic, so I am making one.

Great game. Fantastic Game. Sequel? Naw, it's an expansion pack. Still, the first game was fantastic and this game improves on it. New enemies that work well, new weapons, new items.

This group of survivors is good, if not better than the first. Ellis is the standout, his stories are awesome.

Anyone else play it yet?

Found L4D a fun but vastly overrated game, so I'm passing on this expansion pack/sequel.

I've played them both in local coop so that adds to the enjoyment.

The "sequel" definitely should have been a $30 expansion pack. Really though, so long as we eventually see the original campaigns remixed and ported over (officially or not), I won't mind too much.

Overall however, the game is definitely fun. It takes what made the first game great and bumps it up a notch. I do feel as if the environments and playable characters lost a lot of their charm however. It feels much more action-oriented than survival-oriented now.

I definitely wouldn't play the game with strangers. Unless you know three other people to join in on LAN or Steam, the game might not be as fun as it should be.

The original plays like an unfinished product after playing L4D2. The matchmaking is of good quality, the improvements are awesome. I love the new campaigns as well. Great game.

The first game seemed to have more lulls in the gameplay, parts where you were just wandering around deserted areas. I think they added to the tension. I felt less tension in the sequel, but that just be I was better at the game and knew what to expect. The sequel feels more wacky and light hearted, really.

The game definately looks fun, but Christopher Grant said it was just too hard.  So hard, it completely ruined the game.

It didn't seem harder to me, but I've only played the first three campaigns.

I think that it feels pretty on par with the difficulty of the first game. Of course, playing a FPS with a gamepad instead of a mouse and keyboard is always going to make it much harder. :P

I've been hearing great things about the game and the demo has me appreciating the new stuff Valve/Turtle Rock has added. However, $49.99 is a bit too much for me so I'll wait for a sale or discount. Shouldn't be too long since L4D got down in price pretty quick.

Lately, I've been thinking that it's not that L4D2 is an expansion pack but that L4D had such little content from the get go that it wasn't much of a game for its asking price.

The campaigns from the original game will be re-released as an expansion pack for the sequel! :P

That game is reason for much grief here in Australia.  The classification board didn't allow the game to due no R rating for video games.  Valve made a very tame cut down version with most of the blood and gore removed.

The new AVP was also just knocked back, but this time the devs have said tough luck.  No cut down version for you.

I wonder, does Steam actually differentiate between regions? I mean, what's stopping someone from simply buying a North American retail copy on Amazon and then activating it within the Steam client?

Yes, Steam goes by region. If you try to install a different region it will give you an error.

It can be done.  I'm not sure how, but there are ways to make it work.  It can also be gifted.  I've never done it.

Yes, Steam goes by region. If you try to install a different region it will give you an error.

I guess then that my question is: how does Steam decide what country you're in? Is it just by IP, or does it detect your country settings in Windows itself? Both of those things could be easily circumnavigated. Likewise, would it really stop you from installing a disc-based copy of the game if it's from, say, America?

BUMP!

This game is harder than L4D. Where advanced in L4D2 is almost expert in the original. It's not that the zombies are any harder, but the level design has been kicked up a notch. There are a lot more rush events. Subtle additions like water or more in your face effects like smoke from fire and Hard Rain. One definitive thing that has been made harder is reduced ammo for shotguns and accuracy commands a much greater influence. Addition of melee weapons does make the game a little easier if you are skilled. Additional items is both a blessing and a curse as you have greater tactical flexibility as to how you deal with a problem at a greater opportunity cost.

Graphically, not much has change except that the dark feels darker because there are now bright places and it generates a feeling of foreboding that wasn't in the first since everything was dark. The zombies now gib in a detailed and spectacular fashion with parts going everywhere compared to the red mist of the first. It has a detailed damage system which makes the infamous Soldier of Fortune games looks like a cartoon. It is most definately a more violent game.

In the end, it's not really an expansion pack, but how the first game should have been. L4D does feel unfinished after playing L4D2. L4D was ruled by firepower, L4D2 places greater emphasis on teamwork.

If there are any PC players in AUS and NZ, I can be found under the name oohhboy on steam if you want for hit me up for a game.

I have L4D1 on PC and L4D2 on 360. I'd like to get into them more but I have nobody to play with other than pubbies which is eye-clawingly awful
