That's the case for just about any book-to-movie adaptation.  But it doesn't mean the movie isn't stellar.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

This is yet another case of the book being WAY better than the movie.

That is why I liked the mini series of the Shining (if that is what you are referencing). The book was a tragic downfall of a basically good man who was tempted back into drinking, who at the very end fought against his own demons to redeem himself. With Nicholoson I felt he was a bit crazy right from the start. Also I think the croquet mallet is far more interesting then the axe, it is a unique killing weapon.

So you would recommend the 1997 TV mini series over the 1980 Horror classic?

It doesn't have the production values of the 80s,they are really two different films. The Kubrick movie is its own unique entity, the 1997 TV series is closer to the book. One is more methodical then the other (the mini series being the methodical one).

I still recommend the Simpsons version.

I think that goes without saying.

Simpson parodies are almost always better than what they parody.

I don't like the movie. The creepiest thing in there is the wife, who looks like something out of Insmouth. It's never clear whether the ghosts are real or not, and the pacing is terrible.

I guess another movie to mention in here would be the Saw series.

well, Saw 1-3 at least, and I still don't understand how it's up to Saw 6 already.

I enjoyed the first Saw well enough.  Didn't care to see any of the sequels.

I'm not sure if it counts as scary, but Se7en is really freaking excellent.

What she said. A little slow sometimes, but definately very creepy in places. Interesting (and unsurprising) factoid: Jacob's Ladder largely inspired the original Silent Hill.

Jacobs Ladder is a movie that I've been meaning to watch for longer than I can remember.
I never wanted to watch it on TBS/TNT/USA or whatever other channel it played on TV, it was one of those movies I was holding out to see uncensored & uninterrupted.

^This.

Does anyone remember in the first saw where the dude locked in that room is yelling "WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH MY WIFE?!" and then cracks a smile?

I'm debating on whether or not to rewatch the Saw series as part of my Halloween Horror Marathon, but I already have so many movies on my Netflix list, and the saw series isn't on Instant Watch like it should be.

Only Teen Wolf Too is on Instant Watch.

They only have the double feature in disc format though.

Arachnophobia, now there is a movie that sticks with me to this day.
I constantly check the inside of a lamp shade before reaching for the the switch, and I always make sure the inside of a cereal bag is closed in the box if I'm gonna eat it.

That is definitely a movie I always recommend to anyone that wants to get creeped out by something that could really happen.

Every bush, every tree is a potential threat.  Big Bob could jump out of any one of them, including the ones in your backyard.  A great movie for the kids if you want to them stay indoors their whole lives.
And be afraid of taking showers.

The bathtub scene in Ghostsbusters II scared the piss out of me when I was a kid.  I was afraid to take a bath for like a week.

You know what's not scary, and instead, rather dull?  Halloween Horror Nights.  Okay, maybe they might not be dull the first time you go, but after that, it's just... lame.

What's the deal with all those Saw movies?

I like bad horror movies though. They become comedies.

Haven't seen any of the Saws past 2, but I bet they're pretty funny.
