The problem with the show is that it was on GSN to begin with. Seriously, I only randomly found out about it a week ago. Who the heck watches GSN regularly that isn't a blue-haired old lady anyway?
I used to watch Game Show Network all the time. Back when it launched, it was great. The problem was that they started focusing more and more on original programming and they've stopped replaying most of the classic game shows they started with.
I guess it's because I was watching a lot of older shows at the time as well. From MASH to I Dream of Jeannie or the Andy Griffith show. The funny thing was watching these older shows, I then recognized most of the celebrities on them. It all tied together so well. Heck, I'm a huge fan of older movies and watch way more movies made before say 1975 then I do of movies made after. Cinema today. Ugh.
The fall of the GSN is disappointing. That was a channel I could put on anytime of the day and I had no problem watching it. I loved the old 1950's/1960's panel/discussion game shows like To Tell the Truth or I've Got a Secret. It's funny how the revival's/reboots of those shows can never live up to the original productions. You don't think it would be that hard to recreate a show like that but they just don't work. I also saw the episode of To Tell The Truth with Frank Abernagle Jr of the bio-pic Catch Me If You Can. This was a year or two after that movie so it was this awesome find to just tune in and catch that episode. Catch Me If You Can even starts out with this To Tell The Truth appearance. And if you're interested, Frank was able to walk away with the full prize as the whole panel were unable to correctly identify him.
But the one program I watched everyday was Match Game. They still play it early morning because I think it was a pretty big draw for the network. That show was hilarious. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend you start watching it. The 74-77 years were probably the best but you can still get a lot of fun out of the other seasons.
Yes sir, the GSN was a big part of my High School years. Which is why it's current stat is such a tragedy. I have a feeling that it will probably just up and disappear soon. They need to start paying for the rights and bringing back the Mark Goodson production games shows. Those are the best. The Price is Right. Password. Family Feud. I know they still make it but there's something special to the old Richard Dawson hosted Feud.
The other thing they should acquire the rights for is The Gong Show. Every once in awhile, they would suddenly spring a few episodes of it on the air. Do a special marathon one day and then never show them again for months. They only seemed to have a certain few because they would replay them but they were worth watching every time.
Anyways, this is supposed to be about new shows but thinking about the GSN always gets me talking on my favorite genre of T.V. The Game Show.
