Conan - Weeknights @ 11pm (10 central) on TBS
« on: June 04, 2009, 11:56:44 PM »
For those of you that don't know, Conan O'Brien recently took over the Tonight show on NBC.

what was a surprise to many is the backdrop for his monologue:
The top pic not the bottom. The bottom is what it looks like it was traced from.

If you put them together this is what you get:

Kotaku ask Reggie about it:
Quote from:  Kotaku
Now that we've seen how Super Mario World's level design has helped shape Conan O'Brien's Tonight Show backdrop, we had to get Nintendo's reaction. We did.

"That's great," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said as he looked at it for the first time during his interview with Kotaku.

"We know that he is a fan of what we do, and we're thrilled to have him as a passionate Nintendo fan. Maybe we'll have to go play some Wii Sports Resort as well as Super Mario Bros Wii."

So, no cease and desist, Reggie?

"No. For Conan, we'll let that one slide."
http://kotaku.com/5279071/nintendo-thinks-conan-obrien-mario-homage-is-great

someone from Conan's side also responds twice:
comment from twitter.com
Quote from: BigBley
Ha ha ha - thanks for the Super Mario tip, friends - b/c of you, we might do it as a bit on the show tonight! I'll keep you posted! ;)

I hate linking to twitter, but thats where the comment was made...
Quote from: BigBley
Super Mario didn't make it into tonight's show... Hopefully tomorrow though! There are some tech things in the bit to work out.

So who's gonna tune into The Tonite Show w/ Conan O'Brien (on firday nite) to listen for the Super Mario bit?

fake edit: Conan also made a video game related joke sometime this week during one of his monologues. I will paraphrase it here for you.
"Microsoft just revealed a new motion camera that doesn't require you to use a controller, which is good because no w it frees up your hands so that you can also pay with your Wii"

Is that really what his new set looks like? It is probably just a freaky coincidence...

I think it was actually Jimmy Fallon who made that joke on his own show.

They just did the skit of Super Mario Bros. The background was all in motion and the theme song was playing. Conan was jumping around and had the jumping sound effect. You should check out nbc.com to see the show again. It was on the monalog part of the show. The begining of the show.

The Tonight Show is once again watchable for the first time in 17 years. I can't believe that it's already better than Late Night, but it is. The last Late Night w/ Conan episode was great, especially when he mention that people were saying he'll have to "grow up", and he replied, "that's just not going to happen".

Awesome!  I knew about the backdrop, but not the skit.  I've been catching up on Conan via hulu.com, I just watch the monologues though, unless there's a really interesting guest.  Man, it's so nice to have Andy Richter back, and it's great that they kept basically the whole band, too.  Good deal, NBC, if I had cable TV I'd not Tivo through your commercials.

hulu's awesome!

For all those that have no idea what going on with the whole Tonite Show on NBC thing

In 2004 Jay Leno and NBC agreed to pass on The Tonite Show to Conan in 5 years just as Johnny Carson has passed it on to Jay Leno 17 years ago.

>>>>>>>>>>>fast forward to last year

Jay Leno passes the torch to Conan, but now decides he isn't ready to retire and would like The Tonite Show back. Jay pressures NBC into getting him a 10pm show so he wouldn't go to a different network and compete with Conan. 10pm show is a ratings disaster killing Conan's all important lead in which in turn lowers Conan's start up ratings. Not to mention that Jay was trying his hardest to book all the big guest before they could show up with Conan, and you can already see was going on here.

Now you can catch up with everything you missed right here:
http://gawker.tv/5448615/the-late-night-war-reaches-its-boiling-point-all-the-clips-you-missed

+2 respect for Jimmy Kimmel with his appearance on 10 @ 10 on the Jay Leno Show.

edit: Howard Stern also has a good outlook on what Jay was/is doing.

It's supposedly a done deal. I think Conan's last show is Jan 22nd (could be Feb, 22nd) and now everyone is hoping he goes out with a BANG!.

Howard Stern has been invited to the show. Talks about Letterman either having Conan on his show or Letterman going on Conan's show.
We're hoping for Triumph The Insult Comic Dog to make a final appearance(interviewing in the line for the Jay Leno Show) and for Conan to bring back some of his all time best skits/props before the end of the show.

edit: I forgot to add that Conan made a public statement that he would not be part of the long standing The Tonight Show moving from it's long standing time slot just to appease Jay Leno and his massive ego. Conan drew a line in the sand and said you move the show you lose me, and it looks like Jay is taking the show back now.
