Nope it is different in Heart Gold and Soul Silver. Also there is tougher trainers in the game than Lance. First of all you can fight the Gym Leaders again and then there is Red which has Pokemon in its 80's.
If anyone wants some help with the Elite 4 the second time around I will be glad to help.

Ha ha ha I beat Red!

Most of my team was in its low 60's.Ursaring was level 33.:/

I led with Wishcash which had Earthquake. Since I led with a ground type versus Pikachu it couldn't use it's electric attacks volt tackle and Thunderbolt. It had to use Iron Tail and Quick attack. I got lucky and Iron Tail missed. Finished it with Earthquake. Next came out Venasaur. Venasaur had Sleep Powder,Sludge Bomb,Giga Drain, and Frenzy Plant. I used Infernape and used Flare Blitz. It almost beat Venasaur and Red healed him. The Hail hit him and went down a little. I used Flare Blitz and managed to beat Venasaur. Next came out Blastoise. It has Blizzard, Flash Cannon,Focus Blast and probably a water attack. Blizzard hits 100% when it is hailing. Focus Blast is a Special fighting attack that is powerful but it has 70% acceracy. I sent out my Roserade that had a choice scarf. The only way that I could be faster than Blastoise.I used Sleep Powder and it fell asleep.I started healing my team. Once I healed my team I tried to put Blastoise asleep again but he woke up and used Blizzard. I sent out Feralagatr. Only Focus Blast would be effective and as long as I healed properly I would out stall him. I used Crunch and Rock Slide. I had a Hard Stone attached to Feralagatr. Crunch had a secondary effect of lowering the foes defence. I got a critical hit from Rock slide and I managed to beat it with a crunch.
Next was Charizard. He had Flamethrower,Air Slash, Dragon pulse and something else.
I kept out Feralagatr and used Rock Slide. Since Charizard is a fire/flying type Rock type attacks are 4 times effective. I managed to outlast him.
Next came Snorlax. My Infernape had fainted so I sent out my HM user,Ursaring you only need Rock Climb and Rock Smash to get to Red. Anyway I used a Max Revive on Infernape and let Ursaring get hit with Blizzard.I brought in Infernape and used Close Combat.Snorlax was down.I kept in Infernape for Lapras and used Close Combat again. Lapras is a water/ice type.Fifhting is effective versus ice.I got it down to 30 percent. Lapras used Brine,a water type attack, which does more damage if the user  has less than half life. So Infernape was gone again. I sent out Wishcash which was in the red.I used another max Revive on Infernape.Lapras use Dragon Pulse. I bring in Infernape and finish it off with Close Combat. Absol didn't really do anything to help.

Anyway now I can get to choose one of the Kanto and Hoeen starters. I don't have a Blastoise on any of my games. I have a Swampert on Platinum. Don't have Blaziken or Septile. I think I am going to go with the Grass Hoeen starter.

Good job, sir!

I just beat the 2nd Elite Four last night, but with my 1st Tier team from Pearl (I just said "eff it" and trasferred everyone over). Even then, I had some problems. It's like Lance did some EV training between this time and the last fight. Now I'm gonna go on a massive breeding kick and fill up the 'Dex.

My Pokewalker seems to have broke... :(

It stopped showing images   but you could still transfer pokemon and it registered steps and made   noise.

Maybe the battery died some how? Seems really soon to be   worrying about a battery.

Anyone else have the same issue?

No. Though I have a feeling it's been roughed around by my keys and other things in my backpack. It was after keeping it in there that it had the issue. I'm actually considering getting a replacement because I enjoyed using it so much. I'm surprised about that.

Nope it is different in Heart Gold and Soul Silver.

Just to make it clear, that's how it was in Gold and Silver too. Only Red/Blue/Yellow had you facing your rival after beating the Elite 4.

I was wandering through Cerulean Cave on a whim, collecting items and looking for Pokemon for the 'Dex. Guess who I came across? That's right, MEWTWO!

Master Ball'd him. Level 70, bitches! His moveset is almost useless in terms of Elite Four fighting, though. Only one offensive attack, and it's not even Psychic. It's Psychic Cutter or whatever that attack is called.

Well Psycho Cutter is the physical type attack of Psychic. Mewtwo has good stats all around except for the defences. They are really the only problem with the stats. So Mewtwo can be a physical or special attacker. What nature is it?

Wow, they added everyone to this game. Kinda cool to see all the old 'cool' legendarys appearing like this.

I'm having trouble beating the ghost gym leader. I have some pokemon that can beat the ghastly/haunter/gengars but they have no good moves. Sandshrew sucks a lot more than I remember. :P

Well if you have a fast Psychic type like Alakazam then you can outspeed them. You might of gotten a choice scarf from when your mom buys items for you so that might help. Dark types work well as well.

Yes it is possible but hard. In Red and Blue I think I used a Ultra Ball.In the new games there are timer balls.Timer balls are more effective the longer the match goes. Dusk balls work better if the area that you are in is dark or at night.

I think part of the problem is I hate grinding so I am avoiding doing so. I also recently restructured my team into what I think is close to my final elite 4 group so I lost one of my stronger team members in the process and have a number of weaker ones in it's place.

I'm got the current lineup:

Scyther
Quilava
Sandshrew
Psyduck
Magnemite
Ghastly

I plan on switching out Ghastly for Kabuto once I can acquire one. I also have a Pidgeotto I could call upon but I would prefer to have the experience go to my chosen team so they require less grinding on voctory road.

Scyther knows Pursuit and Psyduck knows Confusion but both don't have much resistance to Gengar's Shadow Ball.

Late teens to early 20s.

I'm hoping sandshrew picks up a good ground attack so I can take advantage of gengar's poison type weakness. I tend to avoid using TMs until near the end of the game when I better know the strategies I will employ and moves I want on my final team. Also I prefer to not risk losing tms until I find a place to resupply them if needed. Also you never know when a cool move I want to try will appear on a pokemon after a level up.

Well here is the thing the Gastly line of pokemon have the ability Levitate which prevents any ground type attacks from working on those pokemon.Psychic and Dark types attacks work best.
Yeah I play the same as you for the most part with TMs.
Sandshrew gets Earthquake later which is the best ground type attack.
Try to get your pokemon up to Level 25.

Also try using scyther on the ghosts as it can use pursuit which is a physical attack and the ghosts have less defense than special defence.

I think my scyther got the raw end of the deal in terms of defense because shadow ball drops him in a hit or two.

If you have a Metal Coat, you and I could trade each-other's Scythers for Scizors (then trade back again). Higher defense might = win.

You want to breed a Scyther, make sure it has Technician for an ability and Adamant for its nature, turn it into Scizor, then give it Bullet Punch.  You'll wind up with a tank with the same-type bonus, technician bonus, and attack priority.  The thing is entirely too durable and devastates anything that's not a fire type, for the most part.

It's definitely the best Pokemon I've had on my team so far this time around, and getting the right nature is really worth it in this case.  Bullet Punch looks weak with 40 base damage, but when you add in all the bonuses, in a neutral, non-super effective hit, it actually has a 90 base damage with the bonuses I mentioned, putting it about as strong as surf on a non-water Pokemon.

Could somebody explain Natures to me? And I thought that Abilities were unique to each Pokemon. That is, all Teddiursas have, I dunno...SOMETHING. All Weepinbells have some other thing. But Abilities differ between Pokemon too?

Seems like there's a whole level I've not gotten around to exploring.

Most Pokemon have one single possible nature, but some have more.  Scyther has one that ups the power of bug attacks when he has low health, and another, Technician, which raises the strength of attacks that have 60 base power or less.  Technician is considered the better nature for Scyther and Scizor because it has wider, more battle-relevant applications.

As far as natures go, it's pretty simple, but you'll want to look up a chart if you decide to care about them.  Adamant gives Scizor 10% more attack when his stats increase than a normal Scyther, but also gives 10% less Special Attack.  It's a good nature for a Scyther or Scizor because they mostly use physical attacks, rather than special ones.  The various natures raise one stat's growth by 10% while reducing another's by 10%, except for a few, which don't alter stats at all.

I'll trade with you, Halbred. Only thing is I need a metal coat. I might have one in Platinum somewhere. where do you get it in gold/silver?

Thanks for the points thatguy. When I start going all out on the breeding I'll try that out as Scyther/Scizor is my favorite mainstay pokemon by far so anything that boosts his power is a plus for me.

Isn't Slash a 60 base power? Most of the branching type 'Slash' attacks also have base 60 IIRC and since that has a high critical hit ratio then it could be quite deadly. Night/Dark Slash with Technician would be pretty killer.

Scyther already has a poor special so no problem gimping it more for more physical strength.

On the note of Scyther/Scizor, is there anyway to breed Megahorn, the power 120 bug move, into him?

...dang, for the first time since the original gold/silver I'm actually getting interested in deeper level breeding. Crazy.

Stratos, I found mine in HeartGold...if you play with the SS Aqua captain's daughter for awhile, he'll give you one as a reward (I think). I remember when I got it, I was like "Now I need a Scyther...or maybe an Onix."

Actually, there must be two ways to get it, because I used one of them on my Onix to get Steelix (gotta fill up that 'Dex) and I gave the other one to my Scyther.
