Miyamoto's Unused Touch Screen Based RPG
« on: April 20, 2009, 12:48:33 AM »
A recent patent filed with Miyamoto credited as an inventor revealed one of his unused game ideas.

The DS is a platform that features many role-playing games, however not many of them exploit the DS's unique features. A recent patent revealed that Miyamoto has an idea that blends traditional RPG conventions with the unique traits of the DS.

Like a normal RPG, enemies randomly attack players, however the combat is completely touch screen based and presented in a first person view. To attack enemies in battle players simply tap on the enemy with a stylus or a finger.  Enemies take damage if the players successfully hit the enemy, and the amount of damage depends on where the enemy was hit.  For an example: hitting a weak point will yield more damage than a normal hit to the torso, if a shield is hit then the enemies will take less damage than normal. The challenge comes from the movements of enemies around the screen.  If the players miss then so does the attack.

This is kind of funny to me because one of my first ideas when I was trying to think up potential DS games was a touchscreen RPG.  What I imagined was too complicated to be manageable, though, unlike this.

OMG Rail Shooter RPG!

Wouldn't that make Dragon Quest Swords prior art?  :)

Hmm, that's not casual enough for regular RPG players.

That system would be perfect for a new Pokemon.

That's an interesting idea, though I'm not so sure that it would work with multiple enemies as then they would be smaller. That drawing reminds me of Dragon Warrior, a game which bored me...

This same concept could also work on Wii, by using the IR pointer to select the spot.

Oh, I should have figured.
Let's see, I can name Pikachu, Pichu, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Charizard, Squirtle, Venosaur, and Lucario, because they all appeared in Smash Brothers. That's it.

The ones which I listed are playable characters, which is the only reason why I remember them. I couldn't tell you any of the ones which appear as trophies or in the PokéBall item.

Wasn't there a DS game like this already early in the systems life? I think it was a Dragon Quest/ Slime Monsters game.

I don't think Pokemon should go this way. Pokemon was always more about you commanding/guiding/coaching a creature. The web based 'My Brutes' game is more close to Pokemon than this.
