Maybe it will be a new plot twist in this game. At the end it is revealed you are locked in your chair in the doctors office because you are viewed as mentally unstable and the things you thought were monsters were actually people trying to stop you from running around killing people like a mad man. The game ends with you getting carted back to your padded room while you are screaming for your daughter, and it is revealed she was the one who turned you in.

This may only seem tangentially related to Shattered Memories, but I finally today beat Silent Hill Homecoming on my PS3 and rather enjoyed it (once I finally got past the sewers and the difficulty level dropped like a rock).  It's very much a culmination of all the Silent Hills that have come before, particularly Silent Hill 2 and the Silent Hill movie with some stunning art design and an interesting story.

Unexpectedly, though, I find Homecoming very similar to another game I beat recently: Final Fantasy 9.  It's a culmination and homage to what's come before, and after that symphony of of blood; rust; flames; and fan blades I think I'm finally ready to accept Shattered Memories as a new direction for the series.  I'm not sure why they needed to essentially reboot the canon, though.

Because the canon was old, stale, and boring.

Or to other people complex and interesting, witnessed from a variety of perspectives over several (in-game) decades.  The only complaints I've ever read on the Silent Hill stories is that they tend to be too enigmatic and difficult to comprehend (a valid argument for some of the games in the series, though not others).  The only part I've seen people label as "old, stale, and boring" is generally the selection of environments (which tend to be extremely similar across all the games).  It also seems odd to me that while they're revamping everything else, they're leaving the composer right where he (deservedly) is despite sound being one of the most noticeable things that's "the same" across every Silent Hill game.  In a game series so reliant on sound, that's a little surprising.

Mainly the reason I bring up the issue of rebooting the canon is that for the most part the main Silent Hill story was finished in Silent Hill 3 (though arguably continued and ended again in Silent Hill Homecoming).  Silent Hills 2, 4, and largely Silent Hill 5 were self-contained stories so I'm just curious why they couldn't just continue the trend of the self-contained stories (which tend to be more interesting than the canon stories anyway) with the overall backdrop left as it is.  The new style and everything could still be there, but we'd be treading into new territory rather than "reimagining" old ground.

Complex and interesting, yeah. But after 4 mainline games and several offshoots all set in a similar Silent Hill with the same lore, it starts to get pretty stale. It's exactly the same problem a lot of people have with, say, Legend of Zelda. Only Zelda is far FAR more guilty of it than Silent Hill.

Honestly, I like the ice way more than "sh** gets rusty, all doors are locked."

Shitty job with the screenshots.  Looks like someone can't use Photoshop properly.

The free photo viewers out there do a better, quicker job of scaling pics on their default settings.

Reminds me of how Nintendo was a fumbling idiot when it came to GameCube screenshots.  I guess Konami is learning this Nintendo game-making kit thing for the first time too.

Considering this Silent Hill is the player's personal vision of hell... Was the guy who played that round a fan of Al Gore?

Nice. Would be pretty interesting if they did pull out prominent politicians in that regard. Though it would date the game severely down the road and loose a lot of it's power a generation or so from now.

I don't know about that.  The sheer boredom and tedium that comes from listening to an Al Gore speech is timeless.  And besides, who exactly is going to be playing this game "a generation or so from now" that we should care if it's less relevant to the yet-unborn?  As like is not, they'll have their own 4D Silent Hills and will laugh at our pitiful attempts at survival horror ala Back to the Future pt. 2.  ;)

Exactly. If I ever have a kid, I want them to experience the games I played back in the day. Games can get too wrapped up in certain modern events that being detached from that event takes a lot out of the experience. Have you tried to watch movies from a decade or two ago that pulled a lot of it's humor from current events of the time? Especially when you watch it with younger people a good chunk of the humor is lost. I even find myself not laughing at them even if I remember those events pretty clearly. Though, granted, it is not always the case. Shrek 2 referencing the epic OJ Simpson police chase/murder of the 90's was rather funny, but only to us older people who knew of it and remembered it.

Yes, because it's entirely appropriate to compare this game to timeless classics that defined the industry.  This game will be played, hopefully enjoyed, and then likely forgotten a few years later like every Silent Hill that's not Silent Hill 2.  Very few games get the kind of legacy you speak of that transcends generations, so forgive me if I'm more than a little skeptical here.

And no, I don't tend to enjoy movies or TV shows these days that were made before the 1980s, unless their names are I Love Lucy or the Twighlight Zone.  It isn't just the references, though, but that (in my opinion) we make better movies "now" (meaning post-1980) than we did back then, when apparently something as simple as faster-than-glacial pacing was considered taboo.

Hey, now. Silent Hill 3 is just as good, in a different way, as SH2. I'm currently playing through Homecoming and I'm not sure if I like it yet (granted, I only just got through the cemetary). It's much slower-paced than other SH games.
This would be my PSN Trophy Card, but I guess I can't post HTML in my Signature. I'm the pixel spaceship, and I have nine Gold trophies.

I'm speaking in general terms, where SH2 is the only installment in the series you see regularly referenced.  Silent Hills 3 and Homecoming are actually my favorite in the series from a gameplay perspective.  SH2 has a great plot, but the gameplay is horrible and boring.
