Calling... Someone is calling...
Calling... You hear the calling...

Scary happenings in the bedroom
Scarier happenings in the classroom

2009 = the year of survival horror.
First Fatal Frame, then Cursed Mountain, now this -- I'm gonna be all spooked out soon.

I like it. I hope this comes States-side.

I'm starting to feel like Wii is the best system to have a survival-horror game on, simply because of the controls..

better than nintendo being called teh kiddie i suppose..

To add to my previous statement, I'm really liking how the wii could enhance survival horror games. The limited radious of light from the flashlight in this game and how the wiimotes pointer makes it fluid to look around would make for a tense environment that just wouldn't work if this was done with traditional controls.  Even the little things like your flashlight dimming and having to shake or tap it to get the batteries going again (from the Winter demo trailer) or the phone call a the start of this games gameplay trailer coming from the wiimote (an assumption on my part, something i hope they impliment) are just great little touches that would really pull you into these types of games. I really wouldn't mind if Wii was home of survival-horror.

Survival horror is Wii's long awaited destiny.  The genre doesn't work on the "other" platforms cuz it's expected to be about shooting everything with no shortage of ammo.

It'd be cool if they made a survival horror game which used two Wiimotes, one which controlled a flashlight with the pointer and the other which aimed your weapon with the pointer. I know it might be a problem to require the use of two Wiimotes, but, well... Look at how well Wii Play has sold, don't most people have at least two Wiimotes?

Maybe that control style would work better for a Luigi's Mansion sequel; one Wiimote for the flashlight and one for the vacuum.

That's true. Fear is directly related to helplessness.  I wonder how long this game (and others) can keep that feeling without turning into the second half of RE4.

With the D-pad on one of the Wiimotes. I suppose movement wouldn't be as precise as with an analogue stick, but that's no problem if the game is designed with that in mind.

I watched the videos and this is the type of atmosphere that horror games need. The feeling of not knowing what is going on.The uneasiness of the situation.I am going to agree with EasyCure.I liked the idea of receiving calls in No more Heroes. That adds lots of imersiveness to Horror titles.

Oy...the "scary evil dead girl" has become cliché. It was alright when Somara from the Ring did it, but every one after that is just bleh.

Hell, the Grudge wasn't even scary because it had to play upon "make you jump" shocks instead of sheer creepiness like the Ring had.

Looks promising, though, but this cliché needs to die already (no pun intended).

agreed ;)

Normally this sorta thing would irritate me because it has been overused, but since its not been done in video games... i can let it slide.

Once was enough.

Really, how many more Somara clones are we going to have to put up with?

It should be noted that Somara was kind of a take on the little girls from the Shining, though Somara was basically her own evil whereas those girls were just victims of evil, mostly.

Eh, I never played FEAR so I had no idea it was in there, but I still feel it's not that overused in video games. I don't watch movies like the Ring or The Grudge so I'm not as burnt out on the idea I suppose. Sure I get annoyed when I see a movie trailer and thinkg "oh geez, not this Japanese rip-off stuff again" but since I don't watch the movies, I can let it slide if a game wants to borrow it.

I could swear these videos were posted here already a month or two ago, but apparently the game never had it's own topic before, anyway.  I agree that the scary ghost girl is overplayed.  Maybe it hasn't been done a lot of times, but it's an extremely obvious ripoff.  It shows a lack of creativity.  It comes across like the birdmen attempting horror.

On the other hand, it may only be because it's a recent addition to the staples of horror that it's so noticeable.  The videos show lots of reuse of old horror tropes, such as the creepy doll and something hiding under the bed.  And there's nothing wrong with that.  Creepy children aren't anything new in horror, for that matter, but the girl with long, straight black hair is a little too specific.

Somara

???

Sadako?

Anyway, I have my doubts about whether these videos show actual gameplay. Look at the way the camera is moving in relation to the pointer, as well as the actual movement of the "player." I feel it might be a concept video.

The concept has definitely been burned to death (pardon the pun) on film. The creepy child from Hell concept has been around since "The Poltergeist" scared little kids in the old days. The problem that nowadays people overuse it like crazy. The most recent example is a movie (don't know the title) about a girl who discovers that her deceased twin brother (he died in the womb) is finding a way to exist in the living world, and lots of insane stuff happens.

In games I agree that it hasn't been used enough. But the idea itself is cliche, no matter the medium.

I'm very aware of the fact that the game uses the creepy girl cliche but it's nice to see a horror game taken on in a adventure styled game instead of FPS or 3rd person shooters.  I think the idea that you don't really have a weapon makes you feel a lot more vulnerable and that definitely is a plus.  I hope this game gives children nightmares lol.

Yeah, the long, dark-haired little dead/evil girl has become the cliché here and it's worn its welcome already, I'd say.

I mean, the Ring was a scary movie and yes, it enjoyed a great deal of popularity, but it's that popularity which should make devs/writers more hesitant to blatantly rip it off because it'll be so damn obvious that they did so.
