So, the airplane?
« on: January 16, 2009, 11:33:43 AM »
That crashed into the Hudson...

How amazing is this story? Every new detail never ceases to fascinate me. In particular, it's crazy how the pilot brought the plane down so perfectly allowing every passenger to exit the plane; in 90 seconds, no less. That is amazing.

Each new interview from the crew and the passengers are crazy! The retelling of their "last" moments tight before the landing are truly spectacular.

It's ironic how on GMTV this morning they had the pilot of the plane back in 1982 who said (at 37,000 feet):

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress.

Watching the news coverage is a laugh. I am an almost commercial pilot myself. Just watching the talking heads wobble on is some great comedy.

While losing both engines is rather unusual, I would imagine that the pilot was more annoyed by it all than anything else. We get trained to do this stuff in less than 30 seconds with allowance to skip steps according to altitude.

To be honest, there wasn't anywhere else for him to land. Yeah, you got no power, your coming down but your not coming down NOW. Set glide and work your way from there.

I admit though ditching it in the water was badass since there aren't that many cases of completely successful ditching in the water in a jet.

i dont think the pilot has done any interviews yet, and good for him. the day after this story broke and im already sick of it. it makes me glad to see the man is humble enough to ignore the media and keep from letting this hero business from going to his head. i dont usually condone beating women but i'd slap that wife of his to keep her off cnn dammit.

I guess the Hudson had significant freezing today.  Big chunks of ice everywhere.  I imagine things wouldn't have gone so smoothly if those chunks were there during the landing.

That's some luck.

Also, for what it's worth, I still think this story is amazing.
