Ian how would you imagine  multiplayer to work?

I wouldn't imagine it because it wouldn't make sense.  Punch-Out isn't a boxing game.  It's about memorizing AI pattern.  Take the AI away and it's just two goofs pounding each other like Wii Boxing.  The AI is a crucial element of Punch-Out.

I like the idea of creating a fighter and his whole pattern and test it out on people.  That is Punch-Out gameplay and would add endless replay value to the game.

There could be multiplayer; just not directly against each other.

You could face each other by seeing who could whoop an AI's ass faster.

Yeah, and it would be cool if people could download custom fighters and try their luck against them, as well as create and upload their own. And I imagine multiplayer might be the player who designs the better fighter wins.

Anyone here played the SNES "Super Punch Out"?  That game was a great sequel and easily qualifies in my all time top ten.

I just find it out how some outlets are acting like this Wii version is the first sequel to the original Punch Out.  Am I the only one that bought the sequel?

Super Punch-Out is the game I'm more familiar with.  I wasn't so hot at it but my brothers mastered it to the point where they could do no-hit speedruns.  They would try to top each other's times, usually when the other was out of the house, and then when one discovered a new trick to beat that time they would repeat it until the other brother was completely removed from the scoreboard.

Despite loving Super Punch-Out the older of my brothers isn't interested because he figures Nintendo will f*ck it up.  He doesn't like 3D and doesn't like motion control so he's automatically biased against pretty much any Wii game.

At the time I thought everyone loved Super Punch-Out but when I got online I encountered a lot of people who disliked it because it didn't play exactly like the NES game.  The irony is that both games are based on arcade games and Super Punch-Out follows the arcade gameplay much more accurately.  In reality Mike Tyson's Punch-Out is the oddball of the series.  It's like if people crapped on A Link to the Past because it didn't play like Zelda II.

What's that arcade game where it was split adjacently into two stations and you boxed friends using two joysticks with little glove covers?

Thats exactly what I did.  What I love about the game is there are so many opponents that are great for speed runs.  Back in the early 90's my buddies and I would constantly top each others great scores.

Now looking back and owning both games for my Wii, I'd say Super Punch Out has aged better.  While Punch Out was a great game in its time, the gameplay in Super Punch Out is just more satisfying IMO.

For anyone that doesn't have it, just pick up Fight Night 2 for the Cube.  The entire Super Punch Out game is included with it.  On top of that, once you beat it, you can play as Mac in Fight Night.

I have to agree with Ian Sane again.  Punch Out is a pattern recognition AND Rhythm game wrapped into a box package.

They should not have multiplayer in the game, because it wouldn't fit, you would have to change the entire design core for multiplayer and then it just becomes a boxing game.  Boring.

Not necessarily. You could make multiplayer heavily strategic, rather than simply a boxing game. I think it could fit nicely.

Let's see what we can expect from the short summary...
One character flexes his pectoral and glute muscles prior to a fight: Super Macho Man, definitely

While another boxer belches during a cutscene: Its either Soda Popinski or King Hippo

Dropping shorts: King Hippo obviously

I wonder if this will be a remake or a new PO with both new and classic characters.

I am concerned that the new Punch-Out will be a remake.  We haven't seen any screenshots of new characters for example.  After all this time I think we deserve a new game.  No one has waited 15 years to play the NES game with 3D graphics.

I think we will get some new characters, but Ian you should expect all the old characters to return...and it won't be a remake if the patterns are different.

As for making the multiplayer more strategic...boxing is very strategic but I really do not see how you can turn the punch out Formula into a multiplayer game.  If you want to just have those characters selectable and have a more traditional arcade multiplayer boxing game, that I can see happening...but to me it would not be Punch Out, but something else.

But I guess it doesn't matter, as long as the single player remains intact and with the traditional game design it doesn't matter.

I'm talking strategic in the sense that it's more slowed down and it's more about successfully completing combos. Or even easier, just take what we learned from Wii boxing and improve apun it.

They should totally add a female in there...like some big chick named Ursula or something. I think we've come far enough that people won't get offended at hitting women in the mouth with a big glove.

15 years is a long time, not to mention Super Punch-Out wasn't anywhere near the popularity that the original was.  So to the average longtime gamer, it's really been over 20 years since the last Punch-Out came out.  The reason the characters from the original are being included is so it'll get the attention of the average Punch-Out fan who probably haven't played the game in 20 years and only remembers the original.

Plus it might be a plan of Nintendo's to make younger gamers interested in playing the original and so they'll go out and download the original on the Virtual Console.  A way of using one product to hopefully sell another to an audience that otherwise might not have been interested.

Yeah, especially since other Punch-Out wannabes have included women in their ranks (like the infamous Mama Tua in "Ready To Rumble Boxing 2").

I wouldn't expect all the old characters to return since they didn't in Super Punch-Out!  It would be cool though.  You are right that different patterns would make them all different anyway.  But that would still be so lazy if there weren't any new characters, you know?  F-Zero GX's only new characters were unlockable AX characters (which are near impossible for most gamers to unlock) and although that game was still awesome I found that design choice hurt some of my enthusiasm for the game.  It seemed lazy and made things seem more stale.  I wouldn't want that for Punch-Out!  A good mix of old and new characters (or all the old characters plus several new ones) would keep things fresher.  I think it would show the developer is willing to go that extra mile instead of just doing the bare minimum.

Regarding a woman I wouldn't care but I'll bet some feminist group would.  Yeah knock-offs have had it but those are so low profile.  Nintendo is so huge that they get targetted more and having a game that "glorifies violence against women" is probably not a good idea.  You can point out Chun Li but remember that in fighting games you can play as the female characters.  In Punch-Out it would just be you controlling the male character beating up the female one.  Sounds idiotic but sane people wouldn't complain anyway.  I figure Nintendo ought to avoid the issue.

Technically a true feminist would like women to be represented in it. At least I would love to have women boxers!
