Watching movies you already own on TV?
« on: August 24, 2008, 07:24:47 PM »
Does anyone else do this?  I find myself doing it quite often - when I can't find much of anything I care about on TV and my DVR is empty, I'll flip over to a movie that I already own on DVD and watch it.

Now, I know that I own the DVD - and can watch it unedited, without commercials... but I don't care enough about the movie to do that.

I'm one of those pretty much keep the TV on in the background at all times, even with on the PC or playing video games on another TV - perhaps that has something to do with it.  But even when I'm mostly watching TV, I'll still do it.  Am I alone?
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

I only do that if I don't happen to have the DVD on hand...and if I even have the TV on to begin with! ='D

I usually try not to do this but I end up doing it sometimes. I only do it when I want something to be on in the background while I do something on my computer or DS, if I want to actually pay attention and watch the movie I'll go get the DVD. My DVR is almost never empty, though, so it doesn't happen much.

I don't watch TV, but if I did I would never do this.  If the constant commercials didn't drive me crazy, and I could somehow get past the fact that the movie was in full screen, the edited content would drive me up a wall.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I do it all the time, but only with ones I have seen all the way from the beginning to the end.  If I haven't seen it before and don't have the DVD I change the channel because I want to see it unedited first.  I try to catch stuff they cut out, if I can remember it.

I don't think I have ever done this in my entire life.  I have probably however watched an episode of a TV show I have on DVD.  I don't own many movie DVDs and if I do it's for a really great movie that I wouldn't want to watch with commercials and such.

I would never do this unless I have lost or broken the DVD. I hate breaks!! I think they're particularly annoying during a movie too.

A long time ago, I used to watch Star Wars whenever it came on even though I had the VHS tapes.  The special editions cured that habit.  These days, I often find myself "watching" stuff I don't care about on TV while I play something on my DS, but not movies.

Bing on TV gives you the excuse of watching the movie, whereas you may not have thought of it otherwise. You should still watch your DVD, if you really like the movie. Although, you probably won't because the commercials give you an excuse to watch something else.

I do that all the time, but like nitsu said, it's only if I'm already familiar enough with the movie that I don't need to watch it from beginning to end.  I did this with Edward Scissorhands a few weeks ago.

I find that I do it more often with comedies, where the story doesn't really matter as much as dramas or thrillers.  Then there are other movies that you just can't jump into without seeing it from the beginning, like Memento or Fight Club.  I have to plan to watch movies like those.
