Should WiiSports Resort have online play?
« on: July 24, 2008, 03:15:41 AM »
Now a few issues pop up with online:

1) would online lag, defeat the purpose of Wii motion plus
2) Would casual gamers actually play online, or would it take forever to find a game because so few people playing online
3) If a big number of casual gamers do go online, it could potentially be worse online than brawl
4) Wiisports is known for having fun with regular people around and having a sort of real life party, so online mode would be odd for such a game
5) How would Nintendo give a casual game a decent online gameplay that isn't confusing or hard to navigate and use ?
6) Wii Speak what about that thing? Would Nintendo allow smack talk for this game, Animal Crossing is about communication but this would only be for smack talk reasons and how would nintendo feel about it.
7) Wii Sports Resort will sell millions with or without online play, so is it even worth  the trouble.

I would enjoy online play, and expect it but knowing Nintendo it will probably not even have 16x9 support

Personally I don't like the wording of the poll selections.  Anyway,  I  believe that having a rogue online mode, think how you can just jump on and have a match in something like Halo, would be a bad choice for Wii Sports Resort.  I agree that it is a person to person thing.  But I do think Nintendo having the ability to host tournaments and allow people to spectate those tournaments would be great.  I don't even mean a tournament a week but, every season have a tournament in all the different events.  I could see the casual crowd really getting into something like that.  Also having the advertisements as part of the resorts decor would be a nice touch.

I've still never had any serious lag issues with Brawl...

I honestly don't think it fits the target demo of the game.  If you're going to go to all the trouble to have a robust online mode why stop there?  Wii Sports was pretty basic.  You could tell they intentionally held back.  Well non-gamers probably don't care about an online mode so if you're adding one it would be more for core gamers.  But if you're going to make this a game for both non-gamers and core gamers you have to take it further than that and essentially make a core game that is easy enough to get into that non-gamers also like it (the Guitar Hero method).

You either make this a nerfed non-game or a full on gamer game.  You can't go halfway.  Personally I think a full on game with mechanics that non-gamers will like is the way to go for, well, everything but Nintendo obviously thinks differently and is making money with their method.

So I guess I think it should be online and more than that.  But for Nintendo's design it wouldn't fit.

I still say online tournaments be the way to go instead of full online.

They could lock out the hardcore elements (changing the number of innings, online mode) with like a long button combo secret code, that way casuals will never know it exists and will not get confused by options, and the hardcore will have a deeper experience.

Or the could hide the alternative modes in Training like they did with WiiSport and the same effect is achieved.

I elect the Konami Code
