If you were head of the games division at Nintendo....
« on: July 14, 2008, 11:34:05 PM »
and you were told to make a new IP that integrated both the balance board and wiimote (nunchuck and motionplus can also be used) seamlessly, what would you create?

Me?

I'd create something like Mirror's Edge, in that it's a FPA but with one real difference; it's on rails. It could be played standing or sitting (it'll be a much more comprehensive game if you stood up though). To move you would "walk" on the board; any faster than the leisurely walk and you'd start to jog, then run and so forth. Jumping would require a heavy two foot press (or in reality a jump) on the board. The nunchuck would handle your agility. Using the analog stick, players could dive or slide by pressing forward and roll/dive left or right by pressing the corresponding direction. Pressing back will initiate a "brake" and this is the only way to slow down (it's purpose being so that you aren't literally running all the damn time).

The game would be level based and play like a 3D JungleBeat or the good parts of Prince of Persia, where the whole point is to play as fast and as fluid as possible while kicking ass. At the beginning of each level, players would be given an item that would literally be the wiimote. There is no multiple item system in this game. The item can range from a rod to pull vault with, to throwing out a telescoping metal foil wing to cloudsurf ala "Tailspin." After a brief tutorial of what you received and some of it's uses, no further help will be given, having you use your wits to figure what the hell your suppose to do with the item in question, other than the obvious.

Now, that said, it is possible to pick up other items and use it in conjunction with the item you were given. For instance, you could use the rod in a lever situation, or more interestingly, to bat away incoming attacks to create new passage ways.

This game would start out crazy then head into absolutely ridiculous. Every level would be something new; instructing you to turn your balance board side ways because it's a level where your snowboarding, and your item for the level is a parachute.

Enemies? There are no enemies, just environmental danger.

I could post a quick description of a level, but I feel I've said enough. You guys got the idea.

Your ideas?

Umm... a flamingo game?

Haha, but seriously... maybe an American Gladiators game? ... or... a game like controlling that Robot from the new Lost in Space movie a couple years back?

We sure do.........matter of fact, I think I created that one.....

This is different. The pressure is on. It's all or nothing time. Nintendo says make the best damn possible game with the balance board and wiimote included or get the hell out of town.

So while the REV game ideas thread has fun little ideas that would turn out into cool games (as well as already made IP's); this one is suppose to be AAA title time. It's suppose to be similar to the "Homer Simpson, please make me a car" experience.

What is the VERY best idea you can come up with? That's what I'm interested in.

Well, I just threw those ideas out because I was imagining a "react now!" situation. If I have a week to come up with something that's a whole different matter!

I would design a game where you get to play as Reggie, and you go about his daily routine of taking names and kicking ass. It would a street brawler game similar to Double Dragon or River City Ransom, and it would make full use of the balance board and motion controls. I would also bundle it with a plastic shell which snaps onto the wii-mote to make it into a fist with a brass knuckles.

And my other idea would be a game where you play as that thing that floats around inside a cloud in the Mario games and throws spike things down at you. The balance board would be about maneuvering the cloud around, and then you'd use your wii-mote to hurl spiky death down at Mario from above.

And what about a Wii-make of Disney's Aladdin game, but it would be for the Wii and the Balance board would be your magic carpet, and you could use the controller like a sword and the nunchuck as a lamp and you could shake it in order to summon that blue genie. I would make sure Robin Williams was on board for this as a voice actor. :)

Genius.

How about a game based on... that...what was it? That Olympics sport where you ski Cross Country and then do some sharp-shooting? ... actually, make a game that's skiing, and an uzi... like those James Bond movies that take place on mountains! SKI FREE WITH GUNS!!!

Stogi have had that name the whole time you have been here?

Nope. First it was Don'tHate742, then it was Requiem.

KashogiStogi (pronounced kah-show-gee-stow-gee) is straight up classic. I've used this name else where way before the internets dominated my life.

This is why Deguello is trying to ban you

On the subject, I would make a Segway battle racer like Heavy Metal.

Really?

For a while I had "R.I.P Requiem" as my sig....

Then again, I don't look at sigs much neither...

hehe, segway......that would actually be pretty badass. Now would you have guns or melee weapons?

And Deguello is trying to ban me because I gotten sick of my s/n's? That's hardly fair. I'm pretty sure I hit at least 800 posts with both of those accounts (I'm sure more with Don'tHate742), so they're not dupes.

I have a few ideas

I would make an FPS, but not in the same vein of whats popular today. You wouldn't be a marine, or some scientist fighting aliens.
I would make an espionage game, somewhere between goldeneye, and metal gear solid, but really cartooney in a team fortress sort of way.
I know what i like in shooting games that NOBODY provides anymore. I HATE modern fps games. HATE them(other then tf2 and portal). Which is why I would make something totally different. I would definitely have a style to reckon with.

Analyzing what makes games like mario kart, and smash brothers fun I have thought up a type of game that would be a super fun party game, but i won't discuss that.

I'm interested in mmo games, but i see what they do to people and their social lives, so i don't know. If i were to make them the focus would be more about strategy, organization, and control as opposed to leveling up and collecting items. It would be somewhere between cubivore and animal crossing with some team fortress thrown in.

NWR has permission to use any tentative mockup/artwork I post

A Luigi's Mansion FPS game might be really cool. Make it work with motion plus and the balance board and I think we'd have a seriously awesome winner on our hands.

Forgive me if you posted something similar, i havent read everything in the thread yet.

my game would be a free-roaming 3rd-person shooter in a sci-fi setting. Sounds generic right? Wrong. It's not your generic Halo/GoW type shooter with sbeefed up space marines. You take control of either a cyborg or automated power-suit (whichever is better for story) that can move in 3-d space. Think something akin to Iron Man.

You stand nuetral on the balance board and shift your weight left/right to strafe, put weight on your toes/heels to move forward in backward. there is no "hold this button to draw your weapon, press this to shoot" like RE4, cuz you'll need to shoot ASAP since things can come at you in all directions. You fight in space mostly but missions can take you to land areas as well where you have more of an on rail feels, since you won't need to manauver as much; these will be run-and-gun missions.

Its not all point and shoot though, boss encounters will be against massive .... things.. whether bio-weapons or mechanoids or just giant enemy cra..crafts (almost said crabs ;)) and there will be some puzzle elements too them and not just shooting.

You're flying thru space, take out an armada and here comes a gian battle cruiser type thing, what do you do? It has 4 giant gun/missile turretts that also act like armor protecting the inner core as well as cockpit to the enemy. You notice something... Hmm.. they must of gotten this thing out early in a desperate attempt to stop you cuz you notice some latches that look a little unfinished.. a little.. weak. Your blaster or whatever doesnt work but it looks impervious to high temperatures...hm... !!!! You got it, you figured out what you have to do...
You rotate yourself so your feet are above the hatche and you have to carefully shift your weight to steer the flaming jet propulsion system on your feet to trace the hatch and get your way inside. Theres a narrow space but you know you can get by if you steer carefully enough. You dont want to crash into the walls.. not only will it cause (minor) damage but it'll alert the enemy you're inside setting off a trap that can possibly kills you. You make your way to the control area for this one sector and nside you see a few high-tech doodads but just destroying them won't work, you need to detach this part of the ship from the main body not just disable the weapons. You do input some codes (ala Metroid Prime 3) and then use some waggle to hit the release. Vioala!
Rinse and repeat.

Your blaster wouldnt be your only weapon, you'd have some melle attacks too controlled via the nunchuck and they could be used simultaneously (sp?). I can't think of something original right now so i'll just steal something from Sin & Punishment; You'll have some sword of energy sword to atack with at close range.

Once i presented this to nintendo, they'd greenlight the idea only if i made it a StarFox game. I'd have no qualms about it, but everyone here would.

EDIT; i'd also make a racer where you use the balance board as pedals and stear with the wiimote/and or nunchuck. with so many thigns you can do using the balance board and wiimote + n-chuk.. Not only are so many control options possible but so many ideas are possible. I'll have to come up with a good one...

I'd also love to see a TMNT game be done, where you could have up to 4 players in a room provided you had 4 balance boards and controllers and stuff. If anyone ever played TMNT: Turtles in TIme for the SNES then they have some idea what I'm getting at here. In that game, you often moved around the screen on floating platforms, and that would work great with the board. There would be levels where you would be surfing in the sewers, or on hovercrafts, and so on. Each player could be one of the 4 Ninja Turtles, with their own unique weapons and moves.

Another good idea for a game would be a remake of that old paperboy game where you go around on a bicycle and deliver newspapers. I think a balance board would work great with that, and if you made it compatible with motion plus and its accelerometer then it would be able to calculate how much force you use to throw the newspapers.

Also, anything else with skateboards, surfboards, or platforms you stand on and move around on would really kick ass. There could be a Simpsons game where you are bart simpson going around on your skateboard; a back to the future style game with those weird hoverboard things, or imagine a game where you are the silver surfer...

Nintendo doesn't own the licenses to any of these games, so we're going to have to rely on 3rd parties for a lot of these ideas. But think about, maybe the Wii is going to be the Nintendo console where 3rd parties are finally able to get a foot hold on. They have all these awesome peripherals at their disposal, so they would be stupid not to start utilizing them.
