Can't play Rock Band with GH controllers that I already own. I'm not bashing Rock Band. I've played it, loved it, etc. But when it comes to my money, it's very limited. And since I've already invested in GH, it's just gonna be in my best interest to keep investing in it.

Time to bring out the "marketing translator" for this hilarious PR statement:

As we have said in the past, Harmonix and MTV Games believe in an open standard philosophy of hardware and game compatibility.

Everyone should drink our Kool-aid. Oh yeah!

This is clearly in the best interest of consumers, game developers and console manufacturers and will only help to grow the music game genre as well as inspire innovation and creativity.

Its the best thing for all involved to buy our instruments. What? Activision are bringing out their own instruments for their next music game? ****, now what are we doing that's innovative?
Can someone else come to this fight? We're tired of fighting Activison, so come along and make us look good by sucking hard!

Two weeks ago, Harmonix created a software patch for the Sony PLAYSTATION 3 version of Rock Band that allowed for guitar compatibility and support for third party peripherals, including enabling use of Activision's Guitar Hero III controller with Rock Band.

We want you to be able to play with your GH guitar. Hopefully that makes it easier for us to convince you to buy the other three instruments you need.

The compatibility patch was submitted, approved and had been scheduled for release by Sony on Tuesday, December 4. Unfortunately, Activision objected to the compatibility patch's release. The patch remains with Sony, but we have been told that it will unfortunately not be released due to Activision's continued objection.

Activision don't want their instruments to work with our game. What jerks. You should throw your GH controls in the bin and then buy the set of Rock Band instruments. That would be awesome for all involved, particularly us.

As is the case with the Microsoft Xbox360, we believe that Sony PLAYSTATION 3 users should be able to use the peripheral of their choice with Rock Band.

Buy our instruments. It'll be totally interoperable, trust us.

We sincerely hope that Activision will reverse its decision and allow release of the compatibility patch and further, that Activision will allow Guitar Hero III to support Rock Band guitar controllers as well.

We wrote them a letter telling them how angry we are at this news. We're still waiting for a reply on that.

We welcome all third party developers who wish to support our controllers and will provide any required support in order for them to do so.

We need a third party to make us look good. Call me.

We believe that when consumers have choice, everyone wins. Harmonix and MTV Games hope that Activision and others will also adopt this philosophy.

We don't want Activision to win. **** them. Buy our stuff.

I don't understand why so many people seem to think that Harmonix can do no wrong.  Yes, Guitar Hero II was a good game, but what have they done for us lately?  A Wii port of the already crappy PS2 port of Rock Band (where you have to buy new guitars even though you can use Guitar Hero guitars on the PS2 (no patch necessary there!)), and announced Rock Band 2 which doesn't seem to have any reason to exist instead of just offering more DLC for Rock Band 1.  Say what you will about Activision's corporate policies or whatever, but at least GHWT has some new features to justify its existence, and will do all the things that Harmonix claims are impossible to do on the Wii (by which they mean they're lazy and would rather just shove the PS2 port out the door and cash in as quickly as possible).  I'm tired of Harmonix being treated like saints when they're repeatedly screwing us over.

Weren't you paying attention?  Harmonix is made up of musicians who love music.  Neversoft is made up of corporate shills who hate music but are willing to spend every waking minute of their life working diligently on a music game in order to make a quick buck.

Blah blah blah, note charts, blah blah blah.

You see this is what is frustrating about this debate...that shouldn't even be a debate.

Harmonix created the music game with toy instrument genre, so they deserve a lot of respect.

But you know what, Guitar Hero 2 and Guitar Hero 3 to me are both great and fine games.  Neversoft got handed the task of replacing Harmonix...here is something, Neversoft probably requested the game, or at least hand picked the team of designers that loved music games and music to head its Guitar Hero 3 team.

Yes, Harmonix decided to expand the series with adding new instruments with Rock Band, and it was a huge success, which is why Guitar Hero 4 is following suit.  But that doesn't mean GH4 isn't going to be good...or that the designers can't love music and desire to create the best music game possible.

To illustrate this, GH4 is actually doing several things to make their game better than Rock Band.  Character Creator, Music Creator, tons of songs already on the disc, broadening the music types for GH4 instead of just metal, Better Drum set that is more like a real drum set.

It seems to me Neversoft is using what Harmonix learned and pushing forward to better the product, and Rock Band 2 is just a me too product as a reaction to GH4.  Sturdier Instruments?  They could have just released those and be done with it.  Does this mean I think Harmonix is coping out, no.

What I think is going on is Activision sees Guitar Hero as a huge seller and wanted to pump out more games via Aerosmith to make more money...but they hadn't built the infrastructure for sharing downloaded content and such.  However, I believe that with Guitar Hero 4 that will be built and in place.

Harmonix ripped off the idea for the music game with toy instrument genre from the Japanese

Wow.  That's actually a pretty good set list.

Activision and EA really need to get their **** together and let me play both games with the same instruments.

See, when it comes to Wii, though, to me it seems the other way around. Harmonix took the easiest, laziest way to cash in on the Wii market with Rockband. It's a PS2 port, features none of the extras which make the PS3/360 versions so compelling (DLC, online play, tour mode, create a character), costs just as much as the other, fuller-featured versions and was released last of all, months late...

Neversoft is really pushing the boundaries on the music genre, and GH:WT will have everything RB2 will have and more (music creator ftw!). THIS is a prime example of why competition is good, you guys.

Neversoft is really pushing the boundaries on the music genre, and GH:WT will have everything RB2 will have and more (music creator ftw!). THIS is a prime example of why competition is good, you guys.

I agree that competition is good, but I'm increasingly worried about exclusivity inside of exclusivity.  It's bad enough that we segment the gaming world into 3 groups (ps3, 360, and wii), but then to cut them up further (RB/GH) just makes it all the worse.

I felt sick to my stomach when I read that RB:Aerosmith was being released and that all Aerosmith songs were going exclusive to GH.  I only own RB, so how am I going to play my Aerosmith songs?  Am I going to have to worry about Activision and Harmonix dropping sick amounts of money on to bands for exclusivity rights from now on?

How come Activision isn't letting you carry over DLC from prior GH games into GH:WT?  Is it because they don't want to add parts for the other instruments?  If so, that's just plain weak.  They should include the option to play the song with guitars only or download the "full band" version for like a dollar more or something.  Sure people would complain, but at least the option would be there.

Finally, I'm not a big fan of the music creator because it lacks vocals.  I'm usual the vocals guy and might as well just fire up the DS while my buddies enjoy jamming out to our latest creation.  Without vocals there isn't a lot of point in creating a song at all, well, except for old school 8 bit Nintendo music.  :)  I suppose we will have vocal support in next years edition.

I also wonder how the music creator is going to turn out. I think that it will be a feature that people use for like a few days and just never look back at it. And if people want to create music a lot of people imported band brothers or will import band brothers DX. Or on the PC you can use stuff like frets on fire or fruity loops. And on the Mac you have garage band.

Well some people like creating music and not songs. I've recorded my own guitar stuff for years in tons of different formats (from hitting Record on a tape deck to a few simple programs on a PC) and i never once had the desire to record vocals. When i was in a band and had someone to do the singing it was different, but i was just satisfied playing my instruments. Let the guitar do the singing.

as for that set list, it seams decent to me if real. I'm just mad they picked such a lousy song by Social Distortion. Don't get me wrong, i love the song but there are so many better ones to rock out to with friends. "I Was Wrong" is a little too simple to play. They should throw "1945" into the mix, or something similar.

Some had better damn well recreate every single instrumental track from The Fragile within the first week of this game's release or there will be Hell to pay.

(In all honesty, it's entirely possible Trent Reznor will be the one to do it.)

It's just my opinion, but I'd much rather concentrate on writing (but not necessarily singing) lyrics. That said, I already do that with real music outside of some game's "creator". It's just a bummer that they're limiting what could be a killer feature for many, with no real good reason.

I'm surprised they didn't go with "Pull Me Under."  I think that's their only radio hit, but I'm just glad to see Dream Theater at all.

There's got to be a better Journey song than "Any Way You Want It."  I admit it's got a nice solo that will be good for the game, but I'm just so tired of hearing that song.  Even "Don't Stop Believin'" is less tired.

EASYCURE: I remember thinking(don't ask me why) this was a blond haired, blue eyed, chiseled athlete. Like he looked like Seigfried before he became Nightmare.

Basically, I'm opposed to including songs that have been used extensively in commercials.  I keep coming back to "Wheel in the Sky" when I try to think of something else (and "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" for some reason).

Thank you!  I knew I was forgetting something big.  That would be perfect.
