This is a realistic possibility?  I fear 2D Metroid is dead and sh!tty FPS Metroid is the new portable Metroid.  In fact I wouldn't be surprised if eventually Metroid is completely a FPS series and the FPA aspect of Metroid Prime is slowly phased out.

Nintendo isn't the same as Sony or MS when it comes to 2D gaming. They still do develop quite a few old school 2D games. Not as many as they could, but I think its reasonable to expect there to be more 2D Metroid games eventually (although they will probably be for the DS and/or WiiWare).

I'm not sure if Metroid really needs more games, it's been slowly going downhill (Prime 1 > 3, Super Metroid > Zero Mission though ZM was an improvement over fusion) and I'd rather see it go out on a mostly positive note than failure. <insert usual rant about NES-era characters being more liabilities than assets now and that new characters with less incoherent story baggage are needed>. In short, don't make a new Metroid, make a new game that fills the same niche as Metroid but lets players experience something new without the expectations of the old franchise.

In terms of unannounced games/surprises...

Realistically:
DS - New Super Mario Bros 2 Boo.
DS - new 2D Metroid Yeah!
DS redesign to be launched by the end of the year  Baah...(Wish this was last year)
Wii - Mega Man 9 I be excited if they hadn't kiddified the Mega Man character so hard core in the later ones.
Wii - Animal Crossing Mixed feelings...
Wii - Mario Party 27 with Balance Board support Boo.  First they need real Wiimote support
Wii - Kid Icarus trailer, out next year Could be interesting
Wii - The Legend of Zelda trailer, out next year or later Boo, unless its a remake of Wind Waker with less sailing more fighting.
Wii - brand new 2D Castlevania that links up to Order of Ecclesia That could be fun.

In a perfect world:
DS - Golden Sun 3 No.  Golden Sun Wii.  Can I get Amen, Brother.
DS - Metal Gear... to prove that Nintendo didn't just advertise a PS3 exclusive in their own game... IF this happens it be that tactical one for the PSP
DS - Mother 3 I like the complete collection.
Wii - whatever Monolith Soft is making besides Disaster: Days of Crisis Sure why Not
Wii - Metal Gear... because Nintendo deserves 2 original Metal Gear titles for putting Snake in Brawl The whole series
Wii - a RE4:WE style Resident Evil title Yes, Please.
Wii - Eternal Darkness 2 No, Please.
Wii - Starcraft Ghost... yeah, I know....
Wii- Duke Nukem Forever

I wouldn't mind seeing Wii Chess released in America. It would have been neat to be able to play via a Channel of the Message Board, turn by turn. That way, your matches could take weeks!

Nintendo should make a Mario Chess game, which would have Toads as pawns, and Mario would be the king and Peach would be the Queen, and Luigi and Yoshi and a few others can flesh out the rest. They could spice it up with some cool battle animations and sound effects, and maybe even some unconventional chess rules and additions like powerups and stuff.

Everyone's played Chess before, but Mario Chess could be fresh and exciting.

I see where you're coming from. I wouldn't buy a purely Chess video game either (unless it was like $10 or less). But if it were included as part of a collection ala Clubhouse Games for the DS, then I say hell yeah! I'd pay the usual Wii game rate of $50 for a collection of 40+ classic board games, especially if it had darts and billiards and all that good stuff that Clubhouse games had.

I may be channeling IanSane here, but I hope that Wii Chess dies a horrible horrible death. Nintendo shouldn't be putting out barebones implementations of stuff like this. Clubhouse games has its place, but now you've shown them the way and they should take over. If Nintendo makes a chess game, it better be darn-friggin'-tastic because Nintendo should devote their resources to leading the way... and making Pikmin 3...

I will tell you this- Nintendo has started putting together a team of testers for Animal Crossing Wii in Redmond.  They haven't received it yet, but they've been told it's coming.
