I have my main TV and my PC monitors set to "recommended" Wii brightness levels, for consistency.

Might your video overlay be set too dark, compared to your desktop?

All of those look normal. Dunno about the video overlay but the game's a "rent first" game for me anyway, if that.

Dude, Pro, thank you.

I haven't been to your site in so long. Please, continue doing what you do. Your videos are fan-fucking-tastic. I'm surprised the staff hear hasn't made you NWR Fist Media.

I'm really enjoying the game. I'm on mission six.

I'm sad that the game isn't selling terribly well. So much for hopes of a sequel. :(
More people should buy it.

Anyone got any recommendations on making combat playable? Everything else seems awesome.

Don't get into combat.
The only parts I have trouble with are the boss battles. I usually get it after 2-3 tries though. I find that just rotating the remote as opposed to swinging it works best.
It probably is the weakest part of the game.

I dearly love the music though.

1.  Goto Display Options and set the combat display to "path only" or "none."
2.  React REALLY FAST and accurately, and don't get hit.  All that's needed to block is tilt at 90-degree angles to the enemy's slice path.  When it's your turn to attack, then waggle/swipe back and forth as much as possible.  The general lack of health meters and the lack of swordplay inherent in their Ninja style means it's do-or-die gameplay.
3.  There's a certain first-waggle or first-block you can do before combat begins, when done successfully you will have the advantage and attack first instead of blocking.
4.  Avoid combat as much as possible get a better detection score, and to save the sword for more useful things like cutting locks or using it as a step-ladder where you see pinwheels stuck on walls.  Most tools have secondary uses that help solve tough situations.

I didn't know that. Is it different from the waggle used to block enemy throwing stars or am I just missing it?

I love how there are different ways to do things. I discovered a 'jump spot' for my sword after going around another way and killing all the guards. I discovered that lower area because one of the guards I killed fell off the ledge and a guard down there saw the body.

Finally got around to beating this awesome game last night and eating pizza.  Pure waggle satisfaction.  Thru waggle experimentation, I got to know the girl ninja better.

Moar to follow.

I got stuck on one of the levels with Ayume. The one where you have to swing between the branches of trees. I can't figure out how to kill the last uber guard. I hate missing guards.

This is one of the 11 Wii games I've bought this year and never played. There's a good chance that I will play it at some point.

It sat on my shelf for about a month after I got it as well. I keep meaning to go back and try to finish it but my WiiWare and VC games keep distracting me when I turn my system on.

I think by this point the game expects you make use of stocked up items going INTO the mission to ensure that Hissatsu score, or just selectively skip guards to conserve time.  Bring moar bombs?

It was only last night I realized how the game expects those incredibly short completion times.  Those Run+Jump Hissatsu (or any Hissatsu where you fall onto a guard from above) work wonders.  Plus quickly tearing thru a missing like that looks cool.

I do try to equip what I think will help in the mission.

I'm not as worried about time as I am about getting caught and also getting every guard I can. I'm all about the killing. I think I have too much fun doing it.

In that case I'd say some guards can only be killed with the assistance of an item.  So. better have it.

Just repeat past missions to stock up on items.  Don't use what you don't have to, skip some guards, and find ways of neutralizing guards without items OR using items you don't mind disposing of.
