FFCC: My Life as a King
« on: May 17, 2008, 08:46:41 AM »
Why is nobody talking about this game?

I was on the fence about downloading it because I couldn't really get a good idea of how it actually played, but I finally did and I'm pleasantly surprised.  It actually reminds me a lot of Harvest Moon, except instead of vegetables and livestock, you're sort of cultivating adventurers, and each in-game day you do a little upkeep on them and can then wander around the town improving relationships/morale or working on building new additions to your kingdom/farm.

Meanwhile, your guys are out doing whatever you told them to do, which might be gathering materials, exploring, fighting bosses, finding out how to build new types of buildings, etc., and you reap the benefits of their labor without having to endure the tedium of actually doing the fighting yourself.  (But you can actually read a turn-by-turn recap of each battle in the daily reports if you want.)  You also have a little bit of control over your individual guys' attributes by giving them stat bonuses when they complete important missions.

I'm currently somewhere in "Chapter II" (I don't know how many there are), and it's looking like I'm about to start learning how to use magic and organize my adventurers into parties.  This game has a lot more meat to it than I was expecting.

I think LostWinds was the "must-play" of the WiiWare launch, but FFCC:MLAK (sheesh) is also quite appealing to me as the kind of nerd who enjoys keeping track of lots of statistics, and it's clearly going to last me a lot longer.  And honestly, as tempting as it is to bitch about WiiWare prices, I could get both of these games and at least one more for less than the price of a standard Wii game, and without having to go to Gamestop and refuse to buy the strategy guide and warranty.  I think that's a pretty decent deal.  (Though I did have to do a lot of fridge-cleaning.)

In my honest opinion this is the best of the WiiWare launch title games, never have I been so addicted to a downloadable game  and the depth this game has rivals and even surpasses a lot of retail games this generation. I think square-enix did the DLC in a good way because you can buy DLC if you want them but you do not need them they just extend the game which is what a lot of dev/pubs don't understand about them some of the DLC prices in this game are a little excessive but they aren't too insanely priced for the most part. My biggest gripe is a day in the game doesn't last very long(or doesn't feel long since the game sucks you in) because the game is so addicting I usually complete 1 - 2 hour session minimum whenever I play.

Same.

Unfortunately I can't get into Chime's Room yet, still waiting for more Chime Costumes, and I want her to boost my morale at night.

Oh man, I wanted to see the infamous Chime bikini, so I downloaded her alternate costume, but it turns out the bikini's in the second batch of DLC that we don't have yet, so what I got was pretty much just a purple version of her normal costume with a better hat.  Needless to say, I was disappointed.

On the other hand, at least this useless DLC gives me a way to finally get rid of the couple hundred Wii points that are always left over in my account but aren't enough to buy anything substantial.

I will buy this immediately as soon as Nintendo gives me a storage solution. Well, it will be the second game I buy because of that, right after Sin & Punishment.

I just beat it uh...20 minutes ago.

The end is a frustrating series of dispatching adventures and watching them come back with their butts thoroughly kicked.

Protip: if an adventurer gets beat up they spend two days on the mend.  You can cut that to a single day by visiting them on their first day of healing.  It may not seem that important now but it will be during the end-game.

I hope to have a review up in a day or two.

Crimm, how much of the additional content did you buy?  I'm on chapter 4 now and I'm trying to get all of the different races.  I've unlocked one of the races already, but I am at my house limit so I can't build one.  =(

I also bought the additional content that involves new building types, but haven't done anything with that yet either.

Pale, when your at your house limit look for dungeons that gives you a house+ bonus when you clear the dungeon that should get you an additional 10 homes. One thing I did was I eliminated some small homes in favor of spacious homes since you get more tithes(money) from citizens in those types of homes and if I remember correctly a spacious home is the equivalent of 2 or 2.5 small homes. Each DLC (with an exception of costumes opens up a dungeon that you have to beat to unlock that building). Races take forever to unlock btw since you have to explore the dungeon quite a number of times and then attempt to beat the boss.

What happens if you erase a house that has one of your highest level adventurers living there?

Also, I don't believe I got bumped above 20 homes when I unlocked the Yuke House+... hrmm.

The family that lives in the home that you will set to demolish will live in the castle until theres a new home to replace the demolished one. And pale it has to say House+  not Yuke,Selkie,Littltie+ they are two different things.

I forget which chapter I'm on but I've put 5 hrs in so far. Also I am quite disappointed that apparently the "unlockable" content is merely unlocking things in the game. Each thing is only 1 or 2 blocks, so there is no way that is additional. Regardless this game is super addicting!

From what I've read Square has pulled an "EA" and is selling DLC that is actually already included in the original game. Tsk tsk.

I agree that it sucks to pay to unlock stuff that's already part of the game, but in a case like this, does it really make any difference whether it's part of the original download or a separate download?  I mean, either way, it's stuff that was ready when the game was released, so it could/should have been available when you bought it (and since it's already distributed through downloads anyway, there's no "oh, it already went off to printing" excuse).  Even if they had pulled that stuff out of the main download, you'd still be getting screwed just as badly by having to pay for it; the only difference would be a slightly smaller file size if you chose not to get the DLC.

That said, I haven't bought any of it (except the Chime outfit detailed above) and it doesn't feel like I'm missing anything, so all those reviewers who are whining "wah, you really have to pay $41 to get the full game" can cram it with walnuts.

Well for $41, they should have just made an actual game disc and gave the characters facial expressions. Oh well, I'll never play it anyway.

My biggest beef with the game is how many 'twins' there are.  It would have been really nice if they had the space of a retail disc to create many many more look and feel variations of the characters.

At $41 I wouldn't have bought it.

Part of the allure was to finally be able to spend my 200 leftover Wii Points I obtained year ago.

+200 leftover from 2006
+2000 additional (oh, $20 to obtain this game)
-1500 FFCC game (oh, at $15 this game feels less expensive than $20!)
-300 Selkie House (hey I have leftover points! i'll grab a few things!)
-300 i forgot
-100 Chime's outfit

Indeed.  If they had included the 3 race pack, the 11 extra dungeons, and a few less twins, I would have paid 50 for this game.

Also, I bought nothing for my first pass.  I'm going to buy the 3 race pack and 11 dungeons for my Game+.  I need a break from it tho, I marathoned it for review purposes, and that's now how the game should be played.

No you wouldn't have.  Everyone would've complained how a game bearing the "Final Fantasy" name has no exciting action sequences and all the music is just MIDI, for $50.  Talk about N64 standards.

I'm a fan of the $15 release. Microtransactions work great when they reduce the size of macrotransactions.

I don't think so.  I have no problem with the music and the 3 races pack and the 11 dungeon pack would have added 20 dungeons to a 26 dungeon game.
