We're more in agreement than our critics may believe. I'm glad we had this time to chat, Hillary.

However, comparing the best of the third party releases (yeah lots of ports, but GOOD games got ported too) to the best of Nintendo's releases is problematic. Nintendo's problem is that their games will always out-perform, aesthetics- and sales-wise, anything a third party can cook up (MAJOR EXCEPTION: Rogue Squadron at GC launch).

Other than that minor point, I think you're right. The third parties haven't owned up to Nintendo's new dominance and innovative platforms, or at least, they're not early adopters. I disagree with the idea that Nintendo "learned" from the DS launch that third parties would always **** on them; third parties had been shitting on them since 1996, and I say deservedly so.

Third party games have no problem selling on Xbox 360.

I think third parties have a bad case of the shivers when it comes to Wii. They are too intimidated by Nintendo and are not thinking straight. It's like when a low ranked tennis player plays Roger Federer and is always hitting the ball into the crowd, falling over and hitting the net, when he normally wouldn't make those errors.

If third parties were thinking straight, we'd simply get their highest profile games on the highest selling console. What we get instead are weird minigame collections and RE0, with third parties focusing WAY too much on what Nintendo are doing, and not what games they should be making that use their OWN strengths.

"third parties had been ****ting on them since 1996, and I say deservedly so."

Maybe, but at the same time, how long can you hold this grudge until your pocketbook starts to hurt?  This is something Square-Enix saw in the DS, and immediately shifted away from the PSP to the DS with their best efforts and they AND the majority of gamers have never been happier (of course a few Sony fans may be embittered.)  When they buried that hatchet, they found gold in the hole they dug.

Nintendo has to walk a fine line between competing with their third parties and supporting them, and I don't think they've walked it well.

Maybe if the third parties manned up and decided to put effort into Wii titles, Nintendo might have a reason to reschedule. And hey, I think Nintendo front-loading 2008 is a fantastic idea.  This is "releasing a lot of quality at once," because usually Nintendo didn't have this many quality games coming out at once, and they'll try to save some for the holidays.

Nintendo learned with the DS launch that they can never count on third parties.  They even held back crucial first party games like Pokemon Dash (POKEMON) in order to allow Third parties a clean slate, only having to compete with the sole Mario 64 DS.  they responded with Ping Pals and The Urbz.  From that Moment onward Nintendo knew they could never count on them.  They had abandoned them at the start of their most important console ever.  Perhaps their mistrust is justified.   Sure they came back after they found out the PSP doesn't exactly sell games with its hardware, but don't think they would if things were different.

When Konami brings Metal Gear, and Capcom Brings Legitimate Resident Evil, and Square Enix brings Legitimate Final Fantasy, maybe we'll talk about schedule maneuvers.  But if they keep taking giant ****s on the Wii, like Target Terror and all this other half-assed, near-sabotage shovelware, Nintendo has every right to drop bars of gold on top of that ****, just so the Wii doesn't look bad.

Edit: and forgive me if My sarcasm meter is broken.  Ian broke it with his insistence that the DS is the worst Nintendo platform ever.
I'm sorry, this is completely off-topic, but The Urbz on the DS is actually a pretty good game.

Besides, they don't even do that. Nintendo has some of the laziest translators I've seen.

That's too bad, because NOA's Treehouse is the best localization team out there...

This confirms our "**** the rest of the world" theory. Thanks for playing.

Super Paper Mario took 5 months, and they didn't translate any of the in-game text. In the process they CREATED a bug not seen in the japanese or american release.

When Nintendo Wi-Fi launched here, the website never wasn't ready 2 weeks before the launch. It still wasn't ready when Mario Kart DS was released, going to the website redirected you to a pre-register page. To top it off, they then started advertising the website ON TV.

European translation needs to be handled by NOA. It's the only way things would get done properly.

Hmmm... what do we know, like really?

-Nintendo Mario Stadium baseball?
-Wii Music?
-possible casual title in development by NST? (what they cancelled H.A.M.M.E.R. for?)
-Disaster Day of Crisis?
-Animal Crossing(be still my beating heart)
-Kirby Wii(or is this the next Duke Nukem Forever?)

Huh, that's already a pretty full slate from Nintendo. Maybe they don't need anything more?

And there's some third-party stuff that could hit this fall:

-Fatal Frame 4
-Tales of Symphonia 2: Knight of Ratatosk
-King's Tale
-Final Fantasy: Crystal Bearers
-Rock Band?
-Next Guitar Hero
-etc.

I think Capcom said that Monster Hunter 3 is hitting 2009, so no go there, and do you guys think Red Steel will ever see the light of day? Heck, or a wii Rayman game, now that Galaxy's paced the way Ubisoft is clear to take the leading platformer slot this fall.

And then on top of all that there's Wiiware... hmm...

Edit: Thanks insanolord

No news on if Midway is ever going to jump on board the VC bandwagon? I see they are putting more games on the Wii even after saying they won't develop for it any more.

As I always mention, Nintendo confirmed that they are planning to release Kirby and Animal Crossing in Japan this year.  Reggie said the lineup for the rest of the year will be announced at E3 (4 months from now!) and that there will be a big game for gamers this holiday.

I was just thinking Nintendo should probably make a sandbox style game set in the Zelda universe where you could go around and interact with villagers and basically create your own sort of game like with Bully and Godfather and so forth. Yeah, I know that's already kinda the case with Animal Crossing, but I want one set in Zelda with weapons and combat and flutes. ;)

That... could... work. It'd be a drastic change, but I really feel that it may be possible to maintain the sense of adventure in such a game. Understand though that what you're asking for is waaaaaaaaaaaaay western-style gaming, not at all the sort of thing traditionally japanese developers would go for, and almost contrary to all the devices that Nintendo's implemented in their games so far.

They could make a sandbox game which involves every Nintendo Franchise's universe as a "village" which you could visit and do stuff. It would be to sandbox games what Smash Bros. is to fighting games.

When are we going to start seeing some real RPG games on the Wii? I mean I got Dragon Blade but that wasn't really an RPG, and I am boycotting FF:CC so that only leaves what, one Tales game? So far Wii RPG offerings doesn't look any better than GC RPG Offerings. I also really would like to see either Oblivion, or a game like Oblivion on the Wii.

Third Parties will eventually come around.  Here is the thing.  Sony and Microsoft both have only been able to survive because of 3rd party support.  Nintendo, has only been able to survive because of 1st party efforts.

So Nintendo is known for creating some of the best games in the industry, but you know what that has been quickly changing, Nintendo's top development houses still create the best games in the entire industry in my opinion, but Nintendo's 2nd and 3rd string development teams are quickly being surpassed by really talented 3rd party developers.

This is a good thing for the industry, but the problem is, Nintendo fans are always going to pick up Nintendo games first, and 3rd party games second...where as Sony and Microsoft doesn't have the loyalty competition to deal with.

Can 3rd parties change this problem?  Yes, by taking the time to make games actually play good and look good on the Wii.  The "Nintendo magic" can be made by any developer that takes the time and effort to make an original, fun game that plays great.

This generation is just really, really bad for JRPGs. Ironically, it looks like the XBox 360 has the best line-up of JRPGs right now... most of which bombed horribly before LO.

BTW, buy Opoona.

3rd parties save so much money by not devving in HD for Wii, yet they take it to the next level and save EVEN MORE MONEY by cutting back on effort.

Unfortunately, on Wii, 3rd parties can't show off the way they do on HD systems.  Cuz with real next-gen systems, showing off competent HD visuals allows 3rd parties to "look good" on a cutting-edge perspective, all without having to prove the integrity of their gameplay.
