Retro gaming on the N64
« on: January 17, 2008, 03:32:14 PM »
So, I was looking at the old games I have that I never played, and I came across Hybrid Heaven.

It starts off with this long cinematic, then throws you in the game. I figure that I'm the good guy, and I just need to catch up on the story. Then I let a bunch of freaks out of their holding cells, forcing me to fight through them. What kind of logic is that?

I figure I just got to the end of the first chapter as I sat through another cut-scene. More story that doesn't explain my motives, though I figure I'm up against the usual corporate hijinks with an alien invasion thrown in.

The gameplay has so far been pretty repeatitive. Run down a corridor, fight a bad-guy, pick up health from adjacent rooms, repeat. While its nice to see my body parts leveling up, I don't know if its really paying off. Though I like the increases in the amount of health I have.

One thing about the game I love now is it has an option for 'hi-res widescreen'. I love these games that were ahead of their time. It really makes a difference too.

Anyone else doing some retro gaming without the VC? Any Hybrid Heaven lovers here?

Wasn't Hybrid Heaven one of those promising N64 games that caught caught up in production and things started falling apart?

I have no idea. I wasn't up on the gaming scene when it released. Production values seem pretty solid though. The character controls a little better than a tank but not by much, and I keep hitting (Z) to center the camera which drops the guy to the floor instead. And aiming the 'gun' is just like Resident Evil. You're aiming up, straight, or down. No in-betweens. Thankfully there is some sort of auto aiming cause a target just needs to be in the general area to score a hit.

I never really got into Hybrid Heaven back in the day when I got it.  I gave it another go a while ago and got to the final boss before I quit playing.  Interesting combat system, bit kinda dull outside of that.

While we're talking about old-school games...is it just me, or does Yoshi's Story STILL look pretty good?

On the subject of Hybrid Heaven, I remember being really impressed by the first production photos I ever saw of it in Nintendo Power.  Oddly enough, when the game was finally released, it was really blurry and foggy.  And, if I remember correctly, it wasn't just fog, but ORANGE fog.

The original photos (I remember because I was there OH NOES MOVIE QUOTE) were CG renders meant to attempt to simulate an approximation of an idea of what an N64 game could look like if you glanced at it with one eye closed.

What, like the other 90% of games from the 32/64-bit generation? Yeah, Hybrid Heaven was one of those.
