New Forums?
« on: December 03, 2007, 03:13:40 AM »
When do you guys (if ever) think you'll change up the forums?

I'm not really the type who likes pictures in their signature or anything like that, but I mean, we could use a better search feature as well as a reputation stat (though that might be useless here).

Also, new forums allow for easier viewing on phones (and adjacently, the Wii).

Just wondering really..

The forums will change once the "Wii HD" system is released to consumers.

I badly want forums that allow for better mobile browsing.

As for images in your signature, these forums allow it, it's just against forum rules (thankfully).  Not that it matters, I have signatures turned off.

We're actively looking into this now, so if all goes well, new forums won't be too far off.

Haven't you guys been actively looking into this for quite some time, and haven't new forum software been right around the corner forever?

Is there an estimated date? That's all I need really; just something to look forward too.

Your right. A simple "free forum" google search results in hundreds of sites willing to host forums for free.

It's not that simple.  Our current system is very software specific, which means there's a lot of data that would have to be translated to the new forums, which is not a trivial task.  The talkback feature links the main site with the forum, and that would have to be rewritten too.  Software selection is the easy part, but only the first step (and I already have in mind which forum I'd like to see).  Hosting elsewhere is out of the question for all of the mentioned reasons.

I think the forums is one of the things that the staffers have their eyes on.  Just sitting in on some conversations there's a lot of stuff on the plate right now. Yeah, the search engine is hosed, but just go use Google search NintendoWorldReport.com/forums/.   It works MUCH better.

Really?  I never thought of that.  I just typed in "Kirby" last time I searched, trying to find out what happened to that GC game.  It popped up with two ambivalent threads, not caring that the Wii was in charge now.  Then I used NWR's search engine, which apparently has "upgraded" the game to the Wii, though I have some suspicions, I maintain hope that this is true.

Inserting into a website (probably built on a database) and a forum (also database) isn't that hard. Well that's how its done currently from my talks with Ty, but it can be extended further to ensure that the forum software is aware of the new entry (which Fusetalk doesn't do).

Then talk to us about it if the process needs a kick in the pants. You'd be surprised.

Can we get some updates or some progress reports?

no.... ok, well how about you atleast let us know what forum software we'll be upgrading to.

no.... ok, can you atleast tell us that it will be launching b4 summer of 2008?

no.... ok, surely you atleast tell us that you have been working on it, but there are still some technical issues that you are trying to work out, right?

no.... oh wait... nevermind

Not being hard conceptually and not taking time to do are two different things.  The more serious problem is that we also need to change the database software itself, which will require a lot of data migration and testing.  And sure, it wouldn't be hard to change to a new forum, but wouldn't it be nice to have all of the old content move along with it?

Having done this myself to a much smaller degree I can attest to how long and somewhat painstaking it is when migrating data from one forum to another, especially if it's a different forum software.

whut?

Seriously though, its not like the "new forums" idea occurred overnight. And while I'm fine with you giving an insight into the transitional process required, it just seems like it gets pushed down the priority list.

I know this isn't a "for-profit" venture. I know you guys have lives and jobs and the like. But this is becoming a joke.

I threw around some ideas with SUPER back in the day (looking at phpBB for those playing along at home) and while it isn't the most attractive site by default I'm sure there is some value in taking what is essentially a solid product (PHP website and MySQL database) and building on it.

But that was when I had space on my plate. These days its work and WATCH OUT RADIOACTIVE MAN and life, so I haven't kept up with it.

But if you want to bag me because you don't think I know what's involved, that's fine. I've got better things to do.

I think you better go buy a book and hire a tutor, cause I'm sure God was listening and you now know what you have to do.
