TimeSplitters 4 bound for Wii?

Free Radical’s David Doak discusses the possibility.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=14426

In the massive build-up of anticipation surrounding the release of Halo 3 next week, it’s easy to forget that FPS gaming on consoles was originally kicked into hyperdrive on the Nintendo 64 with Rare’s 007 Goldeneye. David Doak, one of the original team members on Goldeneye, has since moved on to Free Radical, the company responsible for the popular TimeSplitters series. In a recent interview with Game Informer Online promoting the upcoming release of Haze for PlayStation 3, Doak discussed the possibilities of bringing future Free Radical games to Wii, including the next iteration in the TimeSplitters series.

Specifically, Doak said that early stages of development have officially begun on TimeSplitters 4. “It is in development, but it’s not at a stage that would look like development if we showed it to someone," Said Doak.  â€œWe’re looking at engine things that we might need to tweak for it and deciding what are the features that we really want it to have." Doak went on to acknowledge the sequel will continue in the heavily satirical vein of the first three games, spoofing both movies and video games. A small sampling of the humor was forthcoming in Free Radical’s release of the series trademark monkey placed in the center of a blood-red COG symbol made famous by Epic Studios' Xbox 360 game Gears Of War.

Moving on to the topic of Wii development, Doak said, “I think it’s a good thing to do, and I think we want to put [TimeSplitters 4] on the Wii." While the game is still without a publisher and remains in a preliminary stage of development, Doak seems convinced that the TimeSplitters style of gameplay can be adapted to the motion controls made possible by the Wii Remote. On the subject of developing games based around motion controls, Doak was critical of using too many gesture controls just for the sake of being ambitious. “It’s better to make a game that’s enjoyable to play than a game that’s got features that don’t work."

As a parting tease for Nintendo fans, Doak  touched on the subject of a remake of Free Radical's 2004 psychic-action game, Second Sight. “If you want to start a petition for remaking Second Sight on Wii, I’d like to see that as well." These days, it’s certainly not unusual for developers to opine about bringing versions of their games to Wii, but given Free Radical’s track record and past support of Nintendo consoles, these preliminary thoughts could well translate into something more than rumor and speculation.

For the complete transcript of the interview, including some discussion of Doak’s thoughts on Metroid Prime 3, be sure to check out Game Informer’s website.

Awesome. Speaking about Halo 3 and Goldeneye, after work, me and my friends are heading off to EB Games in Citywalk or whatever and play Goldeneye in front of the fans. That's going to be lovely! Also going to try to beat Aztec in 00 Agent. How in the hell I beat that back in the days? :-/

TimeSplitters has always been great and I expect the same for number four. Hopefully they get the Wii controls right.

Do it via emulator and get the http://www.rarewitchproject.com mod to add at least your faces to the game.  Also, you should play whatever extra levels have been built in.

Hopefully, it comes around and will be on track. Also, with wi-fi goodies of course.

Hmm, Second Sight. I guess a spiffy remake would make sense if not many picked it up the first time.

This is the kind of news I like to see in the morning.  The Timesplitters were basically my favorite Cube games since they got played THE most while in college.  They really were Goldeneye reincarnate to us.

YAY!

I think the important thing here is that whether or not the Wii gets TimeSplitters 4, Free Radical has a strong desire to make Wii games. (I mean it does print money after all!)

I got stuck playing Second Sight and I never found out if it was a glitch in the game or I just sucked because I started playing Baten Kaitos 2 and forgot about it, then traded it in when the Wii came out in anticipation of buying one which I still haven't done.  I am totally Wiiless atm since I moved out of my house and away from my brothers Wii. But fear not, I will hopefully be able to buy one either next monday or the monday after that.
Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

This game will be one of the best online games for the Wii if it is made.  Infinite replay and infinite humor.  It will be great.

What bothers me is why he is unsure if they will bring it to Wii or not.

This game will bank tons of money if Free Radical takes the time to make the game control great on the Wii, and have online play.  The world they created has always been great for online death matches and creative and crazy weapons.  They just need to make it even more tongue and cheek not just about movies but games as well.

A prehistoric level with real dinosaurs ripping Turok would be great.  A futuristic level blending the universe of Halo and Metroid would be a very funny parody.

All this and more can be achieved for maximum coolness.

i'd get t his game if it came out for wii but...

i've only ever played time splitters 2 on gc, so i dont know if theres a continuing story im missing from part 1 or not, and i never played future perfect though i wanted to... so would i have to atleast play that to understand 4?

if so i guess that would mean i have to finish part 2.. i can get passed the machinist child thing. hell i only got up to the bastard once and couldnt tell if i was doing any damage (though those are the kinda boss fights i love, super tense) and i couldnt get back to him since.

You think there's a story line to Timesplitters?  You're in for quite a shock.

Aliens are invading; you have to travel through time to stop them.  That's the whole story.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I only played TS:FP but I still really enjoyed it without prior knowledge of the other games.

In fact TS:FP makes fun of the fact that they scraped the former female lead character in the opening stage =)

So story shouldn't matter all too much.

Future Perfect is the first real Time Splitters game to have a story...and it basically was Two characters jumping through time into very Spoofy Sceneros requiring you to team up with crazy period side kicks, and occassionally yourself.

I really think one of the coolest aspects was to play a part of the game where the CPU as you help yourselfs then later in that level you are doing the part of the CPU.  That definitely needs to be expanded.

Actually, the one thing I would love to see in TimeSplitters for is the art direction become even more distintic.  I thought the character designs were OK, but I would rather see Free Radical develop a style more like Team Fortress, because that is easily one of the greatest art directions I have seen for a game.  Mix a similar art style with the great humor of Free Radical and you have a great single player game.

Throw in great controls, and online mode with 16 players battling (32 just seems like too many to ensure smooth game play) and you have yourself a must own game.

But wait...Free Radical throws in the create a level mode again expanding it and making them tradable online and easier to create, and you have even more greatness for your hard earned dollar.

This game must be made...TOMORROW!!!

Oh man, did Future Perfect bring back DINOSAUR?  He was the most hilarious character to fight as because he wouldn't actually hold his gun...It'd just sorta float in front of him...And you'd be all: "LOOK OUT, HERE COMES DINOSAUR!"

My friends would play Assault and we would put all the CPU against us as Leo Krupps and Ginger Bread Man.

Then put the weapons as flame throwers and watch them burn.  We have no idea why it was funny to see Leo Krupps on fire, but that and alcohol made some of the best evenings in gaming history.
