I beat most bosses in platformers and adventure games with relative ease (they can be exciting and fun and exhilirating and brilliant, but I can still beat them without too much effort).  Metroid bosses stand out (2D and 3D), but not the final bosses so much (Boos Guardian, anyone?).

Otherwise, I'd say racing games are the hardest.  Excitetruck, F-Zero GX.  In some of the harder levels in those. . . damn.  I've never cussed so much as when I played F-Zero GX's story mode.

Hmm. I've only beaten a small handful of games, so I don't have much experience in this area.

The final bosses of Cave Story were pretty damn difficult. I would have given up if I didn't care about the story and characters as much as I did.
“...there are those who would...say, '...If I could just not have to work everyday...that would be the most wonderful life in the world.' They don't know life. Because what makes life mean something is purpose.  The battle. The struggle.  Even if you don't win it.” - Richard M. Nixon

I'm only just now playing Prime 2, and I beat the Boost Guardian on the first try.  He was pretty much a pushover once I figured out the trick.  What exactly makes so many people claim that fight was too hard?

The Boost Guardian was hard because moving the morph ball around quick enough in the battle can be quite difficult.  I never thought the boost Guardian was impossibly hard, but it could be frustrating if you are great at morph ball and bombing.

The final boss of Rocket Knight Adventures was always a challenge, but I can't seem to recall any bosses which I can recall as immensely difficult to vanquish.

And yeah, I don't count SHMUP bosses either. Those bosses are far too easy to make nigh-impossible for them to count.

Problem with the Boost Guardian is that it's not easy to predict his trajectory and you always feel like you'Re moving through molasses while fighting that guy.

Was that the boss where you jumped into a giant mech and had a giant robot battle with the evil possum.  That kicked ass.

The guys who turns into the giant spider in Zombies Ate My Neighbors.  I don't know if he was actually the final boss in the game but he was the final boss for me because I never got by him.

No, the final boss is the pig computer which starts in a padded room with the thing in the center and ends with you in an escape pod and the remains of the thing attacking you until you go through reentry and the computer is burned up (though that may have been only the Megadrive version which was just called Sparkster IIRC). Axl Gear isn't the final boss.

i'm not sure if i should count this or not because this boss was made damn hard on the highest difficulty level, on anything under he was fairly simple, but i'll submit it for your approval anyway:

The emporer alien thingy from Perfect Dark.

i couldnt for the life of me get to him on the perfect difficulty level and the few times that i did i was raped. im a fairly average - above average console FPS player but that level made me feel like a noob or something.

EASYCURE: I remember thinking(don't ask me why) this was a blond haired, blue eyed, chiseled athlete. Like he looked like Seigfried before he became Nightmare.

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories Final Boss Sora Story mode.  My eyes felt like they were bleeding from all the action happening on the tiny screen.  I wasnt able to beat him until I uploaded the game on the Gameboy Player on my cube.

Id say Sonic and the Secret Rings but I am sure everyone here wouldnt count that game anyhow.

I think Sparkster was the sequel but my memory is a little fuzzy.

I actually thought the first fight with Erazor was harder than the second one, and I loved how you basically played a game of chicken with him.

Even though I haven't finished it yet, I love the bosses in Prime 3. The variety of attacks and pattern memorization remind me greatly of the gaming days of old.

And yes, "Sparkster" was the sequel.

Does Ready Steady Go count (last song in Ouendan)?  I still can't beat that damn song.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Haha I must say beating the final song in EBA on the hardest mode was an awesome feeling . . .

How does it compare in difficulty to the Ouendan final song?

Ouendan's final song is way harder AND more annoying.  You don't get that wonderful skip intro button in that game (in the sequel you do tho)  and I got tired of sitting through 30+ seconds everytime I had to start over.  The hardcore Ouendan fans like it more than EBA because they believe the game is harder, it sorta is but sorta isn't.  Like I said without the option to skip intros the game can get frustrating.  I still need to get Ouendan 2 that will probably be my next Ds import (the last being bleach ds 2nd).

The same can be said for any game, get good at it and there is no difficulty.  Saying RPG's can't be difficult because you can level up is the same as learning the patterns of bosses and learning to dodge their attacks, a skill that requires persistence.

No. To get good at a twitch game you need to develop your reflexes and learn about the game, this is a change on you, the player. Stats in an RPG are part of the gamestate. A genius player could pop Contra into his NES and play through it immediately but he couldn't pop in Final Fantasy and do OVER NINE-THOUSAAAAAND damage on one attack sinmply because his attack power depends on a number on his character. Conversely, a total idiot could take a save where every character is at level 999 and kill everything in sight with little trouble whereas an idiot playing Contra wouldn't stand a chance even if he is placed in the very last level, perhaps even at the final boss. That is what I consider difficulty, a challenge to the player himself, not a challenge to accumulated numbers in the game. The potential of a player is capped, some people just cannot get good enough to beat a hard twitch game but no matter how bad you are at an RPG, as long as you just grind to increase your numbers you can beat everything (save maybe for the secret bosses that won't be beaten just by randomly doing crap) without skill.

It's usually not too bad because the intros are only 10 - 15 seconds.  But the intro for Ready Steady Go is well over a minute.  It makes it very tedious, especially when I can't get past the 30 second mark.
