Hardest Final Boss Fight

I know polls are illegal, so this is not a poll (If you think differently shame on you). Anyway with all this talk about Metroid Prime 3's final boss fight, I thought I'd give my opinion on what final boss I thought was hardest. For me, it would have to be King K Rool from DKC2, that was a brutal boss fight but one that I felt a great sense of accomplishment from when beating him.

That was nothing compared to Viewtiful Joe, nothing. It gave me a great sense of accomplishment only when I slammed it into the return box at blockbuster.

The hardest final boss I've ever fought is Ubusunagami Okinokai, from Ikaruga.  I've never even come close to beating him without unlimited credits.  You can't fire at him, so you just have to avoid his attacks for a minute and a half.

The second hardest final boss I've ever fought is Lavos from Chrono Trigger.  It's possible to skip to the final boss fight at the very beginning of a Game+ (i.e. starting the game over once you've beaten it once).  I've only managed to beat him once with just Crono and Marle.  It's possible to fight him with just Crono, but I dare not try it.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Hmmm I beat Ikaruga and don't remember much about the final boss (Granted I beat the game with unlimited credits). Chrono Trigger is a game I need to play more of though, I got it awhile back when it came out on PS1 as a rerelease but had to sell it because of money issues.

Chrono Trigger is nearly unplayable on PSX because of the horrible load times.  Do yourself a favor and buy a copy on eBay.  Sure, they're expensive, but totally worth it.  If you really want, sell it once you're done and you'll probably wind up spending a minimal amount to play the game (you might even make a profit, depending on how the auctions go).

What I loved about my short time with CT is that you could see the enemies on the screen and if I recall correctly you were more involved in the fighting (Like SMRPG).

I have to back MJRx9000, Viewtiful Joe was hell. Boss gauntlet plus a battle with Leo and King Blue. Never beat the final battle because I was too frustrated.

In any event I got screwed playing that game because I remembered reading some interview(or thought I read some interview) saying that Kids mode was going to be Hard mode and Adults mode was going to be easy because typically kids are better than adults at video games. However this didn't happen and Adults mode was actually Hard mode, and that sh!t was hard. The whole thing sucked royally.

i was a wee lad when i played margo rpg and very new to the rrg genre, so at the time the completely optional battle against Culex was so f-ing hard for me. I kept coming back to it whenever i could but couldn't beat him.

i made it to the end of the game and decided to level up as much as i could, only to go call to Monstro Town and try one last time. I succeeded and by then the reward felt hardly worth it.

Also the final boss in geist was made hard by the controls. Actually all those bosses were hard because of the controls. For some reason, and this hasn't ever happened in any other FPS game i've played, i kept getting disoriented and confused about which way was up and down when aiming.

Agreed 100%. I had trouble with that as well solely due to the control scheme. It was extremely disorienting and pretty annoying.

Why must you guys remind me to finish games? I already have too many games to play. I forgot all about Geist.

If you can't beat Viewtiful Joe you're weak and modern day gaming has made you soft.  Your twelve-year-old self would weep if he could see you now.

Geist's final boss wasn't hard.  The hard boss fight was the one right after the helicopter crash.  One good thing about the Wii is that button mashing to get out of trouble has been replaced by remote shaking, which would have prevented the problem I had because I swapped the analog sticks.  That alone would make Geist 300% better on the Wii.

I played Chrono Trigger so much, always using New Game+, that Crono on my save can solo Lavos.  I don't recall his exact level, but I think it's over 80.

I can't really think of a "hardest" final boss.  Of all the final bosses I've encountered, I can't think of any that were actually harder than all the other bosses in the game.  There's usually some optional boss that's just ridiculous, the final boss isn't a challenge because I've just got so much health and firepower by the end of the game, or I find some cheesy tactic.  Sometimes, I just have an inordinate amount of trouble with an earlier boss.

"The hard boss fight was the one right after the helicopter crash"

I found a glitch spot next the exit door (far away from the crash site) where the ghost troopers couldn't "see" me.  I randomly launched grenades till they died.

Yep, I would fully agree here. I didn't have much trouble with the last boss of Viewtiful Joe, but King K. Rool was extremely tough. He was hard in DKC3 as well, but the second game in the series will forever have a place in my memory for how many retries I had to commit before finally downing K. Rool.

I suggest people take a walk down memory lane too, if they might have forgotten how epic (and long) that battle was:

I think the original Megaman for NES has the hardest bosses of all time. I have never met or spoke to anybody who's beat that game unless they were rocking a game genie...

Actually, that reminds me of a hard fight from Mega Man.

(This is as a kid)

Mega Man 2 had a boss at the end of one of the Wiley stages that required you use a perfect amount of crash bombs to beat it. There were tiny spinning blades that shot out energy blasts behind doors. I always found this incredibly hard as a child for some reason and more times than not I would screw the stage up and fail to beat it.

Completely agree.  I bought it as a double pack with FF4, and never got past the part with the frog, because of the damn loading times.  I didn't even try FF4.  I may do that someday.

The load times may have improved since it has a much faster drive to use now.  Anyways.  That DKC2 boss fight doesn't look as hard as I thought it would...

On DKC2:

yeah that was hard back in the day.. but try it using the GC's sad on the virtual console.. I thought it would be a breeze since i went the whole game using that button layout, and still remembered his patterns, but it was still hard!

on mm1:

i never beat that game as a kid but then again my brother and i didn't own that one, we had 2 and beyond. As a teen i was able to beat it using in game trials (no game genie stuff) and as i got older i beat it the honest way with no tricks, just pattern memorization.

also out sure if this really counts as a boss battle but, i was never able to beat the Wily team in MM Soccer.

Hm, hardest final boss, no idea. There's loads of final bosses I never beat. Though Bunny Must Die's final boss (I presume it's the final one) probably ranks highest on the "WTF? How am I supposed to beat that" meter. She has 7 or 8 phases. I can't make it past the 4th or so, especially since the only weapon I get that far with is the sword and then comes a phase where she's surrounded by damaging fire orbs and flying well above your head so I can't reach her with the sword.

I generally exclude shmups from such comparisons because those just go completely insane with things like that. If I were to include shmups my answer would be Gradius lol.

I'm surprised anyone said the DKC2 boss was a hard boss fight. With Dixie Kong it's quite easy =)

The only version of him that was somewhat challenging was fighting him in the lost levels area (that's what it was called right?).
