Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron III CONFIRMED
« on: March 22, 2003, 11:01:05 AM »
I received the May issue of EGM today in the mail, and in the "Next Month" section it says they will have a full preview of it in the June issue.  Gamers.com has also confirmed the Factor 5 game to be in development.

I can't link to the Gamers.com story right now because their site is apparently down, so I can't get to it.  The story was on the main page, though.  Here is a link to a scanned page of the EGM mag that I just found, though:  EGM "Next Month" page scan

Ugg. While I enjoyed the N64 and GameCube version I really hope they bring something new to the plate and I don't just mean graphics wise.

Hey lets start a list of things we would like to see. Something I was thinking I would like in another Rogue Squadron game is a mode in which winning medals allows you to move up in ranks. I know that this is in each of the other two games only what I am talking about would actually affect the game. In the beginning you would just be a wing man having to follow orders but as you are promoted you would be able to take on more responsibilities and control and be able to use better ships. Also you would be able to return to older levels once you were promoted and since you would have more responsibility and control it would change what you would have to do in each mission.

I would also like to have more freedom as to how I was able to carry out each goal in each mission. One thing I didn't like in Rogue Leader was that it was to much like a movie that you were playing. Every time you play a level you do exactly the same thing every time. Giving you a mission goal of blowing up a generator or something and allowing you to do it how ever the hell you wanted to would definitely be nice. It would also be nice if what you did in each mission would have consequences so that while you can reach a goal however you wanted to there would still be better ways of doing it than others.

More control over your wing men would be nice as well as them having better AI. I want them to actually do random things instead of just flying in circles shooting at ships. Also the enemies should have better AI as well. Being able to take part in an actual dog fight would be great. I want to be in a situation were a Tie Fighter is on my ass and I have to use my flying skills to out maneuver him. Also none of that crap where if a Tie is actually on your ass you are killed after two hits.

Another thing that I want to see is that they actually get the Battle of Hoth right if it is going to be in this game too. Jesus how hard is it to get that battle to be movie accurate.

Finally they should make it so you have more control and maneuverability with the ships. I want to be able to pull of some kick ass Top Gun type stunts while a Tie is chasing me down.

I just read that EGM scan and their comment about racing through Endor at light speed makes me wonder if there will be a speeder bike level. This could mean that Rogue Squadron III will have non space ship levels. Of course you will still be controlling some sort of vehicle. This game will probably be like Battle for Naboo with both ground based vehicle levels and fighter ship levels.

I definitely want some cooperative multiplayer.  That'd be loads of fun.  More complexity in the control scheme would be appreciated, as well.

Well, I for one am not excited. Not one bit.
I'd MUCH rather see an ORIGINAL space-shooter. One that's not restricted by the Star Wars license, I mean, c'mon, they already covered the movies best battles.. What are going to have now? The best battles from the various obscure comics?

Bah.

That's what I've been thinking. What the hell else is there to cover? Of course keep in mind that the majority of the first Rogue Squadron's missions were based on the comics and book.

What about an Explore-the-Galaxy mode? That'd be awesome, and yes, they better have multiplayer.(co-op and vs. if they could manage it) Also, difficulty settings, ships from Ep2. and 3, and DivX video(that's a given though).  Outmaneuvering should be simplified a bit.  Also, a return of an OK storyline with new characters. Maybe they could implement the Shadows of the Empire storyline somehow....

As far as extras go:
A better designed Music Hall mode, with stop/play etc., and 3D models swirling around as you play in Music Hall like in the original RS.
A better training mode, complete with dogfights, taking out targets and so forth.

And most of all, an option to see scenes from the original trilogy, since the super-duper ultimate edition DVDs are still a ways off.
All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred, and schizophrenia. (George Orwell, more relevant than ever, in "Politics and the English Language")

Why is everyone complainig? Rogue Squadron was excelent, RS2 was excelent. This is going to be an excelent game. I don't really care if they don't add a whole lot because it's already an excelent series. I don't mind if they dont mess with something thats excelent.

Haha.
I was gonna post the firsth thread about RS3, but then I saw this one, so oh well. I was too excited to notice.

But if they could make this like a game where you could actually plan your missions, and then actually jump into hyperspace yourself, that would be COOOOOOL!

They've done the movie battles too much, and now let's see how creative they REALLY are!
I had a bit of a hard time in the space levels; mainly because I couldn't SEE THE DAMN TIE FIGHTERS without the use of the targetting computer. Is it cause I don't have enough skill? Maybe, but a little improvement in that department would make the game just that little more enjoyable.

And please, no more levels like Strike at the Core. The Falcon definitely has better shields that that (every time I played, when I got shot down, before I got a chance to start again, the Falcon just got shot down straightaway - it's not THAT weak!).

I would personally like to BECOME Rogue Leader.

Have any of you played Jane's F15?  The game was a little too buggy for me to handle (common to a lot of Jane's games), but one thing I LOVED about it was the resource management.  As your aircraft got shot down, and as you used more ammo, your supplies would get used up and you would have to skimp on some things until more supplies arrived.  If the war didn't go in your favor, you would be using less and less of the good stuff.

I want to see resource management in Rogue Leader III, and some strategic and tactical freedom, along with some scripted missions.  Maybe I am asking for the best of both worlds, but it would make the game fantastic.

I also want to see one last shot at The Battle of Hoth.  The last one was quite good, but it can be done better yet I am sure.

Listen, stop complaining about Battle of Hoth. It is the BEST. There is nothing you can actually do to make it better. If you want movie-like, it would be more boring than the Shadows of the Empire version of Battle of Hoth (SotE was a good game, btw). And you would technically only be able to destroy ONE AT-AT, since Luke destroys a second with a bomb, and the third destroys the Shield Generator. Movie-like? It would be Bore Wars.

So no.

The idea of having ground based levels like in Battle for Naboo is a great idea. Having the speeder chase from RotJ would be awesome. There are loads of missions from the X-Wing books, and other Expanded Universe novels to choose from. Ground-based, air-based, and space-based.

And if that is anything to go by, RS3 will be F**KING awesome.

Hehe... I didn't say anything was wrong with the Rogue Leader Battle of Hoth.  I am just saying it can always get better.  It's like a staple in a Rogue Leader game at this point.

Oh, that wasn't just directed at you.
And yes, the movie battles can always get better, but how many times do we really need remakes of those levels? Death Star Attack was perfect, except for the lack of the super-fast speed in the movie. They said in the commentary that the reason why there were those bridge-like obstacles was so the level wouldn't get boring; just travelling in a straight line all the time. Having faster speeds would be much more tense.

This level could be more like the movie - more dialogue between the other characters. When you're engagin the TIEs on the surface, wouldn't be cool to hear all the pilots talking to you? What about hearing the attempts of the Y-Wings on the trench? And the first group of X-Wings in the trench:
"Stay on traget!"
"Loosen Up!"
BOOOOM!
"It came form behind!" BOOOOM!

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that there are loads more battles from the books, and since this IS a game about the legendary Rogue Squadron, more levels of their exploits are expected.
Another detail they should add to the ships is that markings of the TIEs the pilots have destroyed.
